84201	William Munro of Culcragie was a student of divinity. His wife was the daughter of the Minister of Corstorphine. In 1678, Hugh Munro of Teaninich, brought suit against William Munro proprietor of half the lands of Culcraggie; John Mackenzie of Davochcairn, proprietor of a fourth of the lands of Culcraggie; Andrew Munro of Coul, proprietor of a fourth of the lands of Culcraggie; and John Munro of Fyrish, proprietor of a quarter of the lands of Fyrish. Hugh claimed that the other four were not paying him enough for the use of his Mill of Culmalachie. The four were summoned before the Lords of Council and Session to have the case heard, but before the trial date, the group settled their differences in a contract dated at Alness in 1679. In 1699, William sold Nether Culcraggie to William Simpson, who held it until 1736. Its valued rental in 1728 was 185 pounds Scots. His wife was Ellen, daughter of the Rev. 84202	William Munro of Dundee (or possibly of Mid-Swordale) is said to have come to America in the ship "Lyon" in 1628 or 1630. He may have settled in Boston and is said to have been the first Munro in New England. He may be the same person as William [209]. 84207	William Munro, 5th of Culcraggie, sold that property and settled in Glasgow. He was a surgeon in the Merchant Service. 84210	William Osmond Monroe owned Monroe Seed Store on Concho St. in San Angelo, Texas. Per the 1880 Census, Precinct 4, Harrison Texas he was the son of William Saffold Monroe (Head of Household). He is listed on the 1900 Census in Wills Point, Van Zandt, Texas. In 1917, he lived in Tom Green County, San Angelo, Texas, and also lived there per 1930 Census. 84211	William owned property south of the Anglican Church at New Carlisle. The street west of the church was the west boundary of the property. Later he traded with Mr. Edward Caldwell for the property in Paspebiac where he made his home. It was here that he started to clear his farm in a thick wooded country of maple, birch, spruce, pine and cedar which was of little value in those days. The lumber for the buildings were sawed with a whip saw at the old saw pit. Shingles were split from cedar logs and shaved with the draw knife. He later gave the eastern part of the property to his son William. While on a visit to the Carr Harris home at Bathurst, William became seriously ill. The doctor was summoned, but he pronounced the case hopeless, and William died shortly after. He was 75 years old. He lived in Boston and Brookline, Massachusetts and had a summer home in Weston. He was a 33rd degree Mason and was buried in the Masonic Cemetery near Boston. General Hunter's letter confirmed his service and also mentioned that William had raised eight children. In 1850, William was a farmer with $3500 in property living with his family in Washington, Ohio. It is quite possible that this record is a composite of two individuals. Guilford says William was born about 1776. 84230	William served in the Lunenburg County, Virginia Militia in 1758 during the French and Indian War. He is recorded as buying land in Halifax county in 1762. He sold his Halifax land in two pieces in 1768 and in these two deeds, William is listed as William Monroe of Lunenburg county. He bought land in Lunenburg county in 1762 but does not appear again in Lunenburg county records. The same land that he bought there was sold in 1794 by a John Monroe who is thought to be his son. On 15 Mar 1768, William witnessed a deed in Lunenburg county. The very next deed recorded involved Obadiah Hooper, the father-in-law of Johnson Monroe. This indicates that there was a close relationship between William and Johnson. Some researchers speculate that William may have been the father of Johnson Monroe [699]. Others adamantly disagree. 84235	William served nearly four years as a soldier in the Revolutionary War, first from 6 Apr to 23 May 1777 under Captain Edward Griswold in Colonel Thomas Bilding's regiment, Connecticut Volunteers. He was discharged in Peekskill, New York. He next enlisted for three years in Captain Harmon's company of Colonel John Durkee's Fourth Regiment of Connecticut Volunteers from which he was honorably discharged in 1780 in Morristown, New Jersey. During his first year he served as a private, then was transferred to Captain Seth Phillip's company of the same regiment, in which he served as a fifer for two years. He engaged in the battles of Germantown, Fort Mifflin, Monmouth and Stoney Point. After his discharge in 1780 he served for six months as orderly sergeant to his old Colonel John Durkee. Later he served a three month's term on a sloop in New York. His interest in military affairs did not abate with the revolution. He moved in 1792 from Windsor, Connecticut to Chenango County, New York, and settled there on a tract on which the court house in the city of Norwich now stands. There he joined the State Militia serving as ensign, lieutenant, major, and lieutenant colonel between 1797 and 1809. By reason of this service he became generally known as Colonel Monroe. He served three terms as sheriff of Chenango County and as the member of the Assembly from that county during the session of 1816. William moved to a farm in the nearby town of Plymouth, New York, where he built a log house and lived until he died. He, his mother and other members of the Monroe family were buried in a cemetery on his farm between Norwich and the village of Plymouth. His first wife, Sally, was a descendant of John and Eleanor Billington of the Mayflower. Her tombstone in the family cemetery in Chenango County, bears this inscription: "In memory of Mrs. Sally Monroe, consort of Colonel William Monroe, d. Feb. 19, 1811 in the 46th year of her age." He graduated L.L.B. from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and then served as an attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice. He was a genealogist and wrote numerous historical articles. He was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Virginia. He and Lillian were married by Rev. Thomas Bryant Smith, the father of the bride. William not only owned Newmore but also the estates of Balintraid and Balnaga. He is described as "a foolish man," and endless stories regarding his eccentricities circulated throughout his native parish. He died in 1802 and was succeeded by his cousin, Charles Ross. 84248	William was a blacksmith and surveyor. He surveyed and laid out Juniper Hill Cemetery at the end of Sherry Ave., off Bayview Ave. (Crooked Lane), in Bristol, Rhode Island, in about 1840. Many families, including his, moved old graves to Juniper Hill from the Old East Burying Ground near the Common. Juniper Hill now contains many of Bristol's most well known and oldest families. His wife was the daughter of Amos and Ruth Wright of Bristol, Rhode Island. One reference says he died in 1813, but this seems very unlikely.
