Robert enlisted in the 6th Michigan Cavalry in 1865 and served until the end of the U.S. Civil War. He had been hired to take the place of another conscripted man.
Robert was injured by a horse either falling on him or stepping on him. While he was still recovering from this injury, he broke his leg while stopping a team of runaway horses. He was permanently injured from this accident, and had to wear a specially made boot on his injured leg.
He was a farmer and served on the School Board for many years.
Robert's wife, Jane, served as a nurse during the American Civil War. People came to her from all around to get her help. They called her "A Healer". She would pack a wound with a poultice of bread and hot milk. One time she used mouldy bread for the poultice on a very badly cut leg, and it healed very quickly. People called it a miracle, but the mould was probably producing penicillin. Even though this was before the discovery of antibiotics, Jane always used mouldy bread after that.

Robert is said to have died in the Civil War in Kentucky. Johnson says Robert is the same person as Thomas Bell Monroe [531]. The parents of Robert were Andrew Monroe born about 1759 in Virginia and Ann Bell. The parents of Thomas were Andrew Monroe born 1749 in Kentucky and Anna Bell. Whether this is an error or an interesting coincidence is not known. Anyway, care must be taken at this point in both families because of the similarity of the names places and dates.

Robert is sometimes called Major Robert and sometimes Colonel Robert. Maybe he got a promotion. After his wife died, Robert joined the California gold rush leaving his children in the care of a Mr. Lewis. Mr. Lewis later abandoned the children to also go to California leaving the children with their Aunt Mary. Robert was still alive in Dec. 1851, but was ill with hepatitis. He died in California so the children were raised by their aunt and uncle.
His will went to probate in Jun 1855 with William Monroe as executor.
