Edmund (or Edmond) Johnston Munro

!St Peter's Prebyterian Church Records, Paspebiac, Quebec. 1875 - MUNRO Baptism - (This is all that is filled in. By elimination of other Munro Family births and baptisms, it is quite likely that this referrs to Edmund Johnston Munro, son of Philip Johnston Munro and his wife Harriet Bean). There are no other records in the register for the year 1875.

!New Carlisle United Church Records, New Carlisle, Quebec, Canada. 1945 - BORN - Edmund John(ston), son of the late Philip Johns(t)on Munro and Harriet Bean, Paspebiac, born May 12, 1875 - Baptized December 9, 1945.

!New Carlisle United Church Records. 1964 - DIED - Edmond Johnson Munro, son of Johnson Munro and Harriet Paspebiac West; born May 18, 1874 - died May 13, 1964. (Error on birth date) Note: Birth date stated as 12 May 1875 in above baptismal record in 1945 is probably correct. Could not have been in 1874 as his sister Clara was born on February 8, 1874.).

Information given by daughters Mary and Eugenia (Mickey) at Columbia Falls, Montana, 1995. Edith birthdate stated April 9, 1896.

Edith completed nursing education in North Dakota and worked as an R.N. in Kenmare and Minot. She met and was courted by John Campbell who was a bank employee at Sherwood, North Dakota. They were married in 1922 in Everett. During the depression when the banks were closed John Campbell was employed by Government agencies to help farmers manage and keep their farms. They also lived at Dickinson, North Dakota. Their oldest son was killed in World War II.

As a widow Edith moved to California where her family settled. In 1995 she is survived by daughters Mary and "Mickey," both living as widows in Columbia Falls, Montana.

James is listed in the Munro family Memoirs as a child born in this sequence. His birth date, however occurs after the 1851 census and he apparently died before the 1861 census. It is perhaps significant that his older brother, William George, named his first son "James" also.

Obituary Renville Co., North Dakota : FUNERAL RITES HELD FOR STAFFORD PIONEER

Following a lingering illness, Mrs. Laura Jane St Croix passed away at Deaconness Hospital at Kenmare on Sunday morning Feb 1 at 4:40 AM at the age of 71 years 7 months.

She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Munro, a pioneer family of Stafford Township. She was of a family of nine children, four sisters and four brothers: Sarah, Maggie, Jane, Emily, James, Albert, Charles and Pearly.

Mrs. St Croix was born at New Carlisle, Quebec, Canada on July 1 1871.

At the age of 17 years she moved with her family to Stillwater, Minnesota. She was united in marriage to Walter Scott St Croix June 11, 1891 at Stillwater, where they made their home until coming to Stafford Twp in April 1900. Here she has lived until her death on Sunday.

To this union were born seven children: Charles of Velva, Walter of Minot, Norman and James of Norma, Celina of Clifford and Sadie of Kenmare. Her husband and a daughter Hazel preceeded her in death, the former passing away eight years ago.

Mrs. St Croix was converted, baptized and united with the Newport Baptist Church in the summer of 1936. She was a member of the local Mission Circle.

She leaves to mourn, besides her children, one sister, Mrs. Charles Kurrasch of Portland, OR and one brother, Albert Munro of Minneapolis, MN., thirty-three grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

All her children and her brother were present for the funeral rites.

This devoted mother has led an unusually busy, useful and unselfish life. Besides rearing her own family in a pioneer country which naturally demanded much of labor and sacrifice, she and her husband gave a home to another family of children. During the flu epidemic of 1918 their daughter, Mrs. James Berry passed away leaving six small children. The grandparents at once took the children into their home where they grew to man and womanhood in the comfortable surroundings of loving and ambiable grandparents. One grandson lives at home but the grandmother lived to see all the others established in homes of their own.

With all the duties of the farm home Mrs. St Croix still found time to be a friend and neighbor to all those about her. Her faith in God and her ever cheery disposition made her life an inspiration to all with whom she came in contact.

The deceased has been in poor health for several years, and the past two years she has been confined to her bed most of the time, so death came as a relief from intense suffering.

Funeral services were held Thursday at the Edson Presbyterian Church with Rev. Haakadahl officiating. Interment was in the Rosehill Cemetery by the side of her husband. Pallbearers were Charles Assels, Jacob Shaver, Chris Peterson, Simon Cook, George McGillivary and Hans Larsen.

Thomas Brock Munro, who was named for the General Brock in Ontario contemporary to his time, and his twin brother, William Thomas Munro, were born at the home and "Trading Post" of their parents near Caraquet, New Brunswick. Records of their birth and baptism exist as affidavits in New Carlisle.

Services of Clergy were limited to occasional itinerant or circuit-riding protestant ministers at this time. Children were frequently baptized at home by parents or others, especially if life was precarious or health was poor, or delayed until travel to distant churches was arranged. If available, any Priest or Minister was acceptable for services, regardless of religious denomination. Registration of births was not required by the Government, and common practice was recording by the officiating clergyman of births, marriages and burials. Eventually these records found their way to Provincial or County listing if not lost in some catastrophe. Documentation by the Catholic Clergy and Churches was meticulously maintained and forwarded to the Bishop of the area's archives. That both Thomas and William had been baptized is quite certain, as they were faithful and stalwart members of the protestant church in their communities of Paspebiac, New Carlisle and Port Daniel.
