83701 UPDATED NOTE OCT. 2019 (By B.J. Steele, via email from Jo Ann Munro Tuskin)

Married 30 Oct 1776, Fair Haven Church, Fairfield, Stamford Darien, CT to Katherine Reed, both of Norwalk in the records, as found in "The Monroe Book" by Dr. Joan S. Guilford-Conn. Unconnected Monroes, p. 600
The 77th Regiment was disbanded in 1763, therefore none of his sons could have served in that Regiment.
The Upper Canada Land Petition of Samuel Reid Munro states, "That your petitioner is the son of Catherine Leech, deceased, formerly widow of John Munro also deceased."
The Upper Canada Land Petition of Catherine "Kitty" Munro states "that in the Fall of 1782 ... Mrs Catherine Leech and children ... were waiting at Crown Point (NY) for a boat to take them across Lake Champlain to St. John's in the Lower Province" (this is St Jean sur Richeleau, in Quebec)
The Upper Canada Land Petition of Catharine Leech, written in 1789 in Augusta, Upper Canada (now Ontario) states: "that she had considerable property taken from her in the colonies and her husband was murdered by the rebels on account of his attachment to the British Government."
Therefore, it would seem that John Munro died before 1782 during the Revolutionary War. There is a persistent family story that he was in one of the Highland Regiments that served in North American during the "French and Indian War", but the exact regiment has not been ascertained as yet. There is also evidence that the family had lived in either Kingsbury or Whitehall, Washington County, New York, and Catherine and the children escaped from there north into the British territory of Lower Canada, now Quebec, and then finally settled in Mallorytown, Ontario.

83703 Upon his death, George's estate went to his cousin, Charles, the son of his uncle James Munro of Daan. One reference says that he was unfit to succeed and that the estate went to his uncle, James of Daan upon the death of his father.

Ref. (2) says that George was "facile and died before being served heir to his father", and that the estate went to James upon the death of Gustavus.

83709 Using the Wetterau Family tree on Ancestry.com, we were able to see source records for Fannie. The tree lists Fannie as an adoptee based on her birthdate being in 1864/65.

Records on this tree indicate this is not the case. The 1880 census lists Fannie as the daughter of Alexander and Caroline at 9 years old. The 1900 lists a separate Fannie as a servant. The same 1900 census lists Caroline as having 4 births and 4 living children.

This indicates that 1880 Fannie and 1900 Fannie are two different people.

83718 Various Munroe family notes state that Otis was born in 1797. Indeed, his death certificate states his age as 38 at the time of his death from asthma on 14 Jul 1834 in New York City, and the same certificate lists his birthplace as Boston, Massachusetts. The certificate shows his remains were interred at Bethel Baptist Cemetery in New york, a cemetery no longer active. According to "The Ichnography of Manhattan Island 1498-1909", by I. N. Phelps Stokes, there were three large burying grounds in Manhattan in 1828, one being for the Baptist and Scotch Churches in Wooster Street, near the old Potter's Field, now Washington Square.

Otis probably moved from Boston to New York City, New York in the mid 1820's. He is found in the 1830 census of New York, and in New York City Directories. He was a printer in New York City in the 1820's and 1830's living in various places in the city including the rear of 31 Orange Street (1826), 27 Mulberry Street (1829-1830), and 117 Orange Street (1832-1834).

That Otis Munroe, father of Malvina, William and Eliza, is the same person as Otis Munroe, son of Amos Munroe and Ann Prouty, is pure conjecture. However, there seems to be a good case to believe it to be true. The extensive genealogical research of Harry E. Boland led him to this conclusion.

Nothing is known about the marriage or descendants of Otis Munroe the son of Amos Munroe. Nothing is known about the parents or ancestors of Otis Munroe the father of three. The only problems with assuming the two people are one are: Otis, the son, is recorded as being born on 8 Nov 1791 in Spencer, Massachusetts and Otis, the father, is said to have been born in 1797 in Boston, Massachusetts. Boland explains these discrepancies as follows. During the time in question, the numeral "1" was commonly written in a way that made it look like a "7". It would be easy to believe that this fact could cause an error to be made in one of the birth dates. Also, the information that Otis, the father, was born in Boston, Massachusetts, comes from information given by his widow on Otis' death certificate. Since she was from Pennsylvania, she may not have been very familiar with Massachusetts and Boland conjectures that she may have stated the more familiar "Boston, Massachusetts" rather than Spencer, Massachusetts.

In light of these plausable conjectures, and in the absence of any evidence to the contrary, it is assumed that the two Otis Munroes are the same person, but anyone interested in this genealogical line should be aware that the connection is not proven.
