| 8. | Joel Riley Monroe was born on 16 Oct 1861 in Kosciusko, Attala Co., Mississippi, USA (son of George Ervin Monroe and Nancy Frances Wilson); died on 17 Mar 1959 in Natchitoches, Natchitoches Par., Louisiana, USA. Notes:
Joel's grandson, Earl Monroe, tells the story of his (about) 70 year old grandfather who lived next to his family and was looked after by his father. One day Joel Riley packed his suitcase and moved to Dunn, Louisiana where he bought about 50 acres of land, cleared it and began farming. Another family member who lived in that area did not remember the story that way.
Stories of this sojourn abound, such as the old man isnisting on going through the bull's pasture until the bull gored him and broke his leg. He had a taste for alcohol. Once he went to a ball game, got drunk "as a skunk" and insisted on walking home which he proceeded to do. He is reported to have cleaned his pipe and left the residue on the porch. the cat ate it and promptly died.
Apparently his farm prospered.
