«i»Long before Alexandria Mounding and Farley Windows came to town, the Munro and McIntosh sleigh and carriage company dominated Alexandria's manufacturing sector for more than 40 years.

There's no trace of the old factory, which was built in 1880 and used to be located on the corner of St. George St. and Main. But the memory of the business will live on thanks to a nearby plaque that was installed by the Glengarry Historical Society (GHS) and unveiled on SDG 34 across the street from Glengarry District High School.

Though the age of the automobile spelled the end of Munro and McIntosh, the company still saw amazing growth during the time it was here. In 1900, it made about a thousand buggies a year. Just before the First World War, it had a state of the art production line, a workforce of more than 200, and produced more than 10,000 sleighs and carriages a year.

The firm's founders were farm boys and cousins from the Apple Hill and Glen Roy area - blacksmith turned salesman Hugh Munro (1852-1939) and wheelwright and plant manager John D. McIntosh (1858-1914).«/i»
