Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Robert Emmett Monroe was born on 22 Jun 1839 in Romeo, Macomb Co., Michigan, USA (son of Freedom Monroe and Mary Elizabeth Cooper); died on 11 Mar 1921 in Webberville, Ingham Co., Michigan, USA.

    Notes:

Robert enlisted in the 6th Michigan Cavalry in 1865 and served until the end of the U.S. Civil War. He had been hired to take the place of another conscripted man.

Robert was injured by a horse either falling on him or stepping on him. While he was still recovering from this injury, he broke his leg while stopping a team of runaway horses. He was permanently injured from this accident, and had to wear a specially made boot on his injured leg.

He was a farmer and served on the School Board for many years.

Robert's wife, Jane, served as a nurse during the American Civil War. People came to her from all around to get her help. They called her "A Healer". She would pack a wound with a poultice of bread and hot milk. One time she used mouldy bread for the poultice on a very badly cut leg, and it healed very quickly. People called it a miracle, but the mould was probably producing penicillin. Even though this was before the discovery of antibiotics, Jane always used mouldy bread after that.

    Notes:

Error alert: Some of the dates in this family must be wrong. According to the given dates, Cornelia was less than 10 years old when she began having children. Her birth date is given as 15 Mar 1855, but I'm estimating that it should actually be about 1843.
