    Text Dear Dr Steele,

It's only a small part of the Munro genealogy but as my wife is descended from William Munro III of Achany I have been delving into that part of the family a little deeper and have some results which I should share with you.

Her line is from William III and his wife Isabel McPherson, daughter Anne Munro and Simon Ross, daughter Elizabeth Ross and John Davidson, daughter Ann Davidson and John Sinclair Gunn, daughter Elizabeth Gunn and William Miller and then Millers in Scrabster, Caithness and then down to Edinburgh.

The last of the male line of the Munros of Achany has been a bit sketchy on some websites but with a little more modern means available to me it has become clearer.

William V of Achany (died c1827) married Catherine Ross (died 1843) in 1783 and they had a total of 11 children.

Fanny b 1785 emigrated with her husband Lt Walter Ross to Canada/USA.
Margaret b 1787 appears to have been unmarried.
William b 1788 died aged 1 or under.
Hugh VI b 1790 became the heir and he died unmarried in Wellington, New Zealand 26th January 1843.
Catherine b 1793 married James Anderson of Rispond with issue.
    Rose b 1795 died unmarried 1873.
David Munro b 1797 worked in Batavia and died unmarried in Padang, Sumatra 27 July 1832.
    Isabella b 1799 died unmarried Evelix 1869.
Anne Purves Munro b 1800 married Lt John P. Gordon 71st Regiment who died in 1824 and she in 1879 - issue 3 children.
Duncan b 1802 was a doctor in the Indian Army. The ship carrying most of his regiment, the 37th Madras Native Infantry, the 'Golconda', was lost in a typhoon off the Philippines 24th September 1840.
    George b 1804 died aged 5 years.

Hugh was buried in a cemetery in Wellington, New Zealand which was dug up and all the occupants re-interred in a mass grave to facilitate building a new road. A hotel that my wife and I stayed in a few years ago overlooks the ground where all the remains were re-interred. Hugh really was therefore the last of the male line of the Munros of Achany as has been stated in other places but I hope this puts some flesh on the issue.

    Kind regards,

    David
