Freedom Monroe

Notes:

When Freedom was six years old, his family moved to Ostego, New York. Then in 1808 the family moved again to East Bloomfield, New York. In 1816 he went to Cincinnati, Ohio and stayed until 1824. He then returned to New York and in the same year whent to Michigan, crossing Lake Erie on the steamer Superior, the first passenger ship on the lake. He took up 260 acres of land in Bruce Township, Macomb County, Michigan. In 1868 he sold the farm and moved to Romeo, Michigan with his daughter, Elizabeth.

Freedom and his brother, Benjamin were signers on a petition to Congress by inhabitants of the Territory of Michigan, U.S., for roads to be surveyed and established.

Freedom wrote to his father, Lemuel, March 5, 1829. Freedom was living at Washington, Macomb County, Territory of Michigan. Before Michigan became a state.

The letter is as follows:

I once more take my pen in hand to inform you that I am well and hope these few lines may find you enjoying this same blessing. I wrote to you a short time after I got home and sent it by Esquire Gates (Gideon Gates was the postmaster and we see his name in Lemuel Monroe's application for a Revolutionary War pension S.S. 12/6/03). I was at Mr. Algers the first of January, they were well. Benjamin (Lemuels son by Anna Potter and Freedoms brother) was well the last time I heard from him which is the best news I can write of him.

The winter the middle of October. I then thought it best to change my situation if ever. I accordingly took to myself a companion for life. Her name is Mary Elizabeth Cooper, niece of Capt Gad Chamberlain from Lima, New York. I want you to write or get someone to do so as soon as you can if you know where Mr. Beach (his brother in law who married Elizabeth his eldest sister) has gone, to inform me so I can write to them. It may be this is the last letter you may be permitted to read from me.

It appears that you are almost entirely forsaken by your first and second family of children as to seeing or hearing from them except myself but you shall hear from me as often as once a year as long as both of live. I hope the family you are now raising will prove more of a blessing than your children here to fore. You have seen a great deal of trouble in your life. I have witnessed a considerable but may you be blessed with peace and quietness the remainder of your days which will smooth your path to the grave . I have no more give my respects to all inquiring friends.

Freedom wrote to Lemuel in 1835.

"I received a letter yesterday written in your name by someone else. I expect by your orders informing me of your situation, which was not very agreeable news. Though if you lived I expected to learn something like it sooner or later. I am sorry that of the numerous family you have there is one you have reason to expect help from...

(Regarding Lemuel) It seems to be a singular circumstance that a man and wife should part and be separated for life without anything essential to cause it, but if agreed upon by both I don't know it is well enough. I was in hopes you would get a pension but if the United States does not give you anything for your services in the Revolution for the liberty which they now
enjoy, I hope there will be feelings of humanity enough in the people of the Town of Bloomfield or the County of Ontario to give you a little something.

If you come to Michigan to live with me which I am willing you should if that be your mind. You have lived amongst them the best part of twenty years. They know whether you are a fit subject for their help or not. Money is hard to be got in this country. I could not raise enough to get here...

If you can find a good place for Alexander -- you had better do it. ......... If you had rather come this spring I am willing. And let Alexander come with you if that is your mind if you think he will do well......... (Alexander was Lemuel's 2nd to last son.

Notes:

Francis served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. On 16 Dec 1862, he enlisted for three years at Bruce Township, Macomb County, Michigan. He was assigned to Company E, 8th Cavalry as a Corporal. He was wounded in the fighting and never fully recovered. He was mustered out of the service on 26 Jul 1863 and transferred to the Invalid corps on 15 Jun 1864. He eventually died of his wounds in 1890.

Birth:
Lydia/Aleda was listed as age 14 in 1850 census giving her a birth date of about 1836. Her death certificate says she was born 5 May 1843, but her relative, Craig Richardson believes that is an error caused by her lying about her age.

Notes:

Robert enlisted in the 6th Michigan Cavalry in 1865 and served until the end of the U.S. Civil War. He had been hired to take the place of another conscripted man.

Robert was injured by a horse either falling on him or stepping on him. While he was still recovering from this injury, he broke his leg while stopping a team of runaway horses. He was permanently injured from this accident, and had to wear a specially made boot on his injured leg.

He was a farmer and served on the School Board for many years.

Robert's wife, Jane, served as a nurse during the American Civil War. People came to her from all around to get her help. They called her "A Healer". She would pack a wound with a poultice of bread and hot milk. One time she used mouldy bread for the poultice on a very badly cut leg, and it healed very quickly. People called it a miracle, but the mould was probably producing penicillin. Even though this was before the discovery of antibiotics, Jane always used mouldy bread after that.

Charlotte's first husband, Ephraim Vanberger, was a carpenter for two years and then worked for five years in surveying and examining land. He was a shoemaker until 1862 when he enlisted in the army during the American Civil War. He was captured in Virginia on 11 Jun 1864 and was imprisoned at Andersonville, Georgia and Florence, South Carolina. He was honorably discharged on 11 Jun 1865.

Charlotte and Ephriam were divorced on 27 Mar 1888.

Notes:

William was a farmer, teamster, and logger. He and his wife started housekeeping in a log cabin but as the family grew they built a larger house. In 1915, he went to Oklahoma to see about homesteading but the land didn't suit him. The family moved to Webberville in 1906. He was village marshall and for many years Deputy Sheriff. He was a hardworking man and his family came first in everything. He had a stroke in 1939 and spent the last five years of his life in bed.

One reference says his middle name was Lemuel and that he was born in 1854. The name of his wife is uncertain.

Irene died in infancy.

Notes:

A book could be written about this man. He was a talented stone mason, wood carver and at age 81 was making pony harnesses. He could play the piano (no formal training) and sing. He would make up a song for an occasion on the spot.

He wrote a column for the Lansing, Michigan newspaper for many years. He always led parades in Lansing on his beautiful horse. When he became old and couldn't get on it, he was hoisted on the horse with a block and tackle.

He was one of a kind. He had a pet pig (575 pounds) that he would lead to town on a clothesline leash. He had a pet squirrel that always looked for peanuts in his pockets, a quail that perched on his shoulder, a rooster that followed him to put the cogs and cats out, and a toad that hopped out and croacked a "good morning."

Bertha married William Darwin Hoyland in 1894-1895. William was born on 7 Aug 1879; died on 25 Sep 1942. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Robert graduated from high school in Howell, Michigan in 1901, and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1908 with a MA degree. He later worked on a PhD, but never finished it.

He taught French for a year at Georgetown University, in Georgetown, Kentucky and then went to Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky to teach until 1917.

He served in France during World War I, and when he returned home, he went into the tourist business, taking parties to Europe every summer.

In 1929, he went to Ohio State University in Columbus as professor of Romance Languages until he retired in 1960. He and his wife then went to live near their son in Cuyohoga Falls, Ohio.

Ethan served as a Lieutenant during World War II. He was killed on the Bagac-Moron Road while attempting to assist a member of his platoon who had been shot by an enemy sniper. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star for his courageous actions.
