«i»Dr. Robert W. Monroe, 84, of Seven Lakes died at First Health Moore Regional Hospital on Wednesday (July 25, 2001).
A memorial service will be held at the Chapel in the Pines on Saturday at 4 p.m. with Dr. William E. Smith officiating.
A retired pediatrician, who practiced in Greenville, Pa. for 32 years, Dr. Monroe came to Seven Lakes in 1981. His bachelor and medical degrees were earned at Columbia University in New York City, and by certification of, he was a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Prior to specialty training at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, he served inthe U.S. Army Medical Corps for almost four years, three overseas during WWII, receiving the Bronze Star award for service in the South Pacific and the Philippine Liberation Campaign.
At various times, he held the presidency and other offices at his clinic, the local hospital medical staff, and the county medical society and served as vestryman and senior warden of the local Episcopal Church.
A Mayflower descendant, Dr. Monroe was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. For many years, he was active in the Clan Munro Association (Scotland and U.S. branches). In retirement, he played an active role in the Seven Lakes Kiwanis Club. He was both a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Southern Pines and the Seven Lakes Chapel in the Pines, where he served on the Board of Direcotors from 1994-1996. Dr. Monroe was a recipient of the Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteerism.
Surviving are his wife, of 59 years, Victoria Elizabeth (Lib); daughters, Victoria B. Novak of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Roberta E. Pluto of Akron, Ohio; a brother, Cleveland H. Monroe of Santa Clara, Calif.; a sister, Margaret Monroe of Madison, Wis., and two grandchildren.
