Jonathan Munroe

Notes:

Jonathan was born in a long low house on the east side of the road on his father's farm in North Spencer, Massachusetts. He lived there with his parents for many years.

After his father's death, Jonathan and his mother continued to live there until Jonathan built a new house on the west side of the road.

Jonathan was a farmer.

When Jonathan died, he left the house on Wire Hill Road to his son, Walter Marshall, and directed him to give each of his children a certain sum of money except Charles Henry, whom he omitted for some reason. When the will was read, Walter Marshall left out the exception, and paid him an equal share with the rest. Charles Henry never knew his father had intended to have him omitted.

Jonathan married Hannah Augusta Boyden on 1 Jan 1832. Hannah was born about 1811 in Holden, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, USA; died on 22 May 1875 in Spencer, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, USA; was buried in Pine Grove Cem., Spencer, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

George enlisted in the Union Army at the same time as his brother David, and their service was the same throughout.

He composed music, mainly for quartet singing, which was very sweet and harmonious. About 1932 Reinold Werrenrath produced one of his pieces on the radio announcing it as by "George M. Monroe--a splendid example of close harmony."

After the war, about 1882, he went to Florida on a hunting trip. There he contracted malaria and died. His brother David went to Florida and brought the body home.

Notes:

John built a house on Ash Street in Spencer, Massachusetts and lived there until his death. He comitted suicide by slashing his throat with a razor.

Notes:

Charles worked as a foreman in the sole leather room of the Isaac Prouty Shou Shop.

He died of pneumonia.

Notes:

Dwight enlisted in the 10th Massachusetts Volunteers in the American Civil War. He was wounded at Fair Oaks and discharged. He was the first man wounded in the regiment.

Dwight married Georgianna Sibley on 27 Mar 1866. Georgianna was born about 1846; died on 21 Dec 1895. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

David and his brother, George, enlisted in Company F, 42nd Massachusetts Infantry in the American Civil War. The two brothers went to New Orleans by boat, and served a year in that area. David was honorably discharged at Readville, Massachusetts on 20 Aug 1863, and became a shoe maker.

Notes:

When Walter's father died, he left the house on Wire Hill Road to Walter. He also left a certain sum of money to each of his children except Charles Henry, who was omitted for some reason. When Walter read the will, he left out the exception and paid an equal sum of money to Charles, who never knew his father had intended to have him omitted.

In 1900, Walter had a nervous breakdown which resulted in his commitment to the Worcester, Massachusetts State Hospital, where he died. He made a very remarkable chain from one piece of wood, which was much admired. The chain later came into the posession of his neice, Drusilla (Monroe) Calitri.

Sarah and Warren lived all their lives in the Lincoln Street section of Spencer, Massachusetts, much of the time in the house of Walter Marshall Monroe.

Sarah was an invalid for the last 15 years of her life, but she was always cheerful and uncomplaining.
