Notes:

Nancy and her husband, Jonathan, with two sons, Francis and Jonathan, migrated in 1853 from New York to Grant County, Wisconsin. They went in company with Jonathan's brother, DeLoss Totman and his family. They went by train to Chicago, then by oxen-drawn coverd wagon to Wisconsin. There were ten in the party, including the driver.

Jonathan's family moved from New York to Cassville, Wisconsin when he was four years old. In 1876 he went with his brother Francis to Iowa. He farmed in Buena Vista County and in 1900 went to Phillips, South Dakota and later to Sioux Falls.

He had no children of his own. His second wife was a widow with seven children.

Notes:

Francis was born in Bristol Valley, New York, which was known as Muttonville. On another page, Ref. (1) also says he was born in Cassville, Wisconsin. But it also says that his parents moved from New York to Cassville, Wisconsin, when he was one year old. He was educated and grew to manhood near Cassville.

In 1876, Francis and his wife moved from Grant County, Wisconsin to Buena Vista County, Iowa. They traveled by covered wagon along with Francis' brother, Jonathan, and his cousin, Chris Totman, son of DeLoss Totman.

He purchased land near Newell, Iowa but sold it on 27 Dec 1916 and moved to Storm Lake, Iowa where he lived until his death.

His first wife, Clara Belle Cottermole, and his third wife, Mary Gourney, were sisters.

In 1874-1875, Rosalia and Edwin went with their daughter, Frankie from the woods of Wisconsin to the prairie of Nebraska. They had to cross the Mississippi River in a rowboat, and traveled most of the way by covered wagon. They bought some land in Nebraska and planted crops, but the grasshoppers came in droves and destroyed the plants. They became discouraged and returned to Wisconsin.

In 1879, they heard of the new Iowa country where railroads were being built, so with the family and mother, they left for Iowa. Again crossing the Mississippi with two small children, they went to Dubuque, Iowa, and then to what was then known as Rock Valley. Edwin built the first building there and it was then known as Rhodes Corners.

Rosalia was a fine seamstress and milliner. After her husband's death, she took a homestead at Phillips, South Dakota, about two miles out into the country. Every working day, she walked the two miles to her place of business and then home again at night. She remarried in 1912

William entered Buena Vista College on 1 Jan 1912 to begin a commercial course. He completed two years work in a year and a half and graduated in 1918 (sic.). He worked as a carpenter, going to college after hours. He paid his tuition and $5 per week to his parents for board and room.

After graduation, he went on the road selling minerals for his brother-in-law, Jeff Longworth. Later he moved to Humbolt, Iowa and worked for Farmer's Mutual Hail Insurance Company for one year. He then worked for 15 years as a field supervisor for the Moorman Feed Company. He sold all lines of insurance for several years specializing in crop hail insurance.

Francisque "Frankie" and her husband moved to a farm near Kenton, Ohio in 1907. Frankie was a city girl and was unhappy on the farm, so in 1908, they moved to Chicago and bought a grocery store. In 1914, they moved back to the farm and then back to Chicago again in 1917. In 1922, they retired to Dunkirk, Ohio.

Ref. (1) p. 245 gives her birth date as 30 Oct 1878, p. 378 says it was 30 Oct 1873. Page 378 says she died on 15 May 1908, but intimates that she retired to Dunkirk, Ohio in 1922. Her last child was born in 1916.

Jessie attended school in Sioux Falls, Iowa. After graduating, she worked as an artist in a downtown studio where she met Elmer Austin. After they were married, they moved to Indianapolis; Detroit; Ipsilanti, Michigan; Chicago and then to Storm Lake, Iowa.

After ten years of marriage, Elmer died of pheumonia leaving Jessie destitute with two small children. In March 1909, she moved to Phillips, South Dakota where her widowed mother had a millinary store and was a dressmaker.

Jessie was a musician and artist. At the age of 88, she exhibited paintings at a Long Beach, California Hobby Show. She was featured as the oldest exhibitor and was asked to show her paintings the next year.

She held several offices in the Daughters of the American Revolution, the U.S. Daughters of the War of 1812, and the Daughters of the American Colonies.

Edwin attended school in Sioux City, Iowa. In 1900, after his father's death, he moved to Storm Lake, Iowa. He graduated from Buena vista College in Storm Lake. While in college, he was employed by the First National Bank.

Edwin was a very enterprising and ambitious person, sometimes working two jobs at the same time. By the time he was married, he had saved up quite a bit of money. He worked as a bookkeeper at Fort Dodge, Iowa, and at Farmer's Loan and Trust Company in Sioux City. In 1906, he went to Seattle, Washington to marry

In 1906, he went to Seattle, Washington to marry his childhood sweetheart. (They were married for 65 years.) There he worked as a court reporter, and worked in the missing persons department of the Seattle Police.

He lived in Seattle for 25 years and in Tacoma, Washington for 11 years.
