Edmund Munroe

Notes:

Edmund was the founder of the New England Glass Company. He was a banker and a broker in Boston, Massachusetts. He was one of the founders of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions.

His first two marriages were performed by Rev. William Emerson

William Munroe, not long ago presented to the Lexington Historical Society the lignum vitae morter with its hickory pestle used in the tavern during the early Indian days for grinding samp and an order from General Washington instructing Col. Munroe to convene a courtmartial.

It is interesting to note in this connection that the other great-grandfather of Mr. Munroe, Captain Hall, of the Medford militia, was first notified of the British approach by Paul Revere on his famous ride to Lexington and that this is commemorated by a tablet set into the wall of one of the three original Hall houses at Medford by the Daughters of the Revolution.«/i»

Notes:

Charles was a civil engineer and went to Harvard College to study engineering. Whether he actually was graduated is not known. He grew restless, and worked as a tape and rod man and later on the North Pacific railroad helping direct the exploration of the route.

He was also an author of boys books.

He married (1) Amelia E. Barr, the daughter of Robert and Amelia Barr. Amelia's father and three of her brothers died of yellow fever in 1867. Her mother then took Amelia and her two sisters and moved to New York City in 1869, where Amelia tutored and worte books. She wrote over 60 in her lifetime.

After her marriage to Charles, Amelia went to Florida where she helped start the Housekeeper Club and Audubon Society bird sanctuary. She served as first President of the Dade County Federation of Women's Clubs and was active in the League of American Pen Women. Amelia and Charles had no children.

Charles married (2) Mrs. Mabel (Stearns) Noble. Her mother owned Mrs. Stearns Stearns School for Girls in Amherst, Massachusetts. Before her marriace to Charles, Mabel was very active in the Denver, Colorado Republic Party. Mabel and Charles had no children.
