When he was about 10 years old, his mother was burned to death from the explosion of a lamp. His father left Hezakiah and some of the other younger siblings in Bristol, Rhode Island with relatives and went to Pensylvania to live.

Joseph was adopted and had his name changed to Jackson. He invented several valuable improvements to the typewriter.
