  2. 3.  Philip MunroePhilip Munroe Descendancy chart to this point (1.Johanna1) was born on 26 Feb 1718 in Lexington, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, USA; died on 14 Dec 1790 in Surry, Cheshire Co., New Hampshire, USA; was buried in Surry, Cheshire Co., New Hampshire, USA.

    Notes:

Phillip's four oldest children, his first wife, Mary and his mother Johanna all died at about the same time, evidently in an epidemic. His last surviving child at the time was dead by 23 Dec 1749. At this time, Philip was 31 years old. He must have married his second wife, Abigail, between 1749 and 1753. From the 35th to 60th year of his age, 11 more children were born to him and Abigail. She was about 22 when the first was born and 47 at the birth of their last child.

Philip was of Shrewsbury, Boylston and Rutland, Massachusetts. The first Shrewsbury deeds call Philip Munroe of Lexington, Massachusetts. A little later he was called of Shrewsbury. There are 18 land transfers of places that he bought and sold. He lived on one of the places called the 'Roe farm', which was still standing in 1963.

He was living on the "Hill" in what is now Boylston, but was Shrewsbury North Precinct in his time. Two of his children were baptised in the church of the North Precinct or Second Parish on the same day, 2 Nov 1769.

Philip Munroe started acquiring land in Shrewsbury Area about 1763, he sold 5 acres to Jonathan Weelock in Shrewsbury in 1763, and in 1765 he purchased a piece of land from Benjamin Tainter. In the deeds he is called "Philip Munro a labourer". Today he would be called a land speculator. Most of the deeds call him of Shrewsbury, two call him of Rutland.

Two deeds establish his connection to Surry, New Hampshire. The first deed dated 22 Dec 1789, in which he is called a physician, and the second dated 29 Dec 1789. He had established himself of Surry, New Hampshire by about 1783.

The following is from "Descendants of John Munro" received from W. M. Roeser - 14 May 2012

«i»Abel was probably a Revolutionary War veteran, and probably lived in Canaan, Columbia County, New York in 1790; and in Stephen, Rensselaer County, New York in 1800. He died in the city of Hudson, Columbia County, New York in 1824. This information was put together for Sarah Elizabeth Monroe (Aunt Lizzie) Altenburg by Myron Hawley Monroe's cousin, Theodore Monroe of Conowingo, Maryland.

Abel Monroe is most probably the Abel who appears on page 63 of "The Monroe Book" by Joan P. Guilford, Ph.D. detaling the history of the Munro Clan. Abel would have been the Great-Grand son of William Munro who was sent to this country in 1652 by Lord Cromwell after the battle at Worcester, England«/i».

The following is from the Spencer reference:

«i»He is probably the Abel at Canaan, Columbia Co., NY in 1790 where his brother Lemuel resided at the time. After compiling this family, we found that Estelle Wait, compiler of the descendents of John Munroe of Bristol had previous done so (NEHGR, 126:240-246) and that Richard Munroe, compiler of the original genealogy of William, had written a note thanking her for the addition of this line. The title of Wait's article is "The Finding of Abel Munroe."

Estelle Wait of Newton Centre, Mass wrote for NEHGR Vol. 126 p. 241 clearing up the mystery of several Abels. This Abel was probably the eldest child of Philip Munroe and his second wife Abigail whose baptism appears in the Lexington birth records on 7 Oct. 1750, no parent's names being given. After the birth of his daughter Rebecca (now his second marriage to Beulah Potter) Abel Sr. seems to have vanished from the Upton-Sutton area...

The Lexington vital record book has a record of the baptism of Abel Munroe on 7 Oct 1750. I am not certain about Abel's death, but I did find a death notice that might well be him.

HeritageQuest has a book containing transcribed death notices from the Northern Whig, which was published in Hudson, Columbia County, NY. It includes a death notice for Abel Monroe dated 10 Aug 1824. The book was typewritten and the text is very fuzzy and hard to read, but here is my attempt at a transcription:

MONROE on the 6th Mr. Abel Monroe, a 76 yrs. (Printers & [??? news for] the western part of N.Y. State are requested to print death.

According to my notes, the transcribed date of death looked like it had been corrected, and might have been August 5th. The age given in the death notice would correspond to a birth in late 1747 or the first part of 1748, which is about right. Since our Abel Munroe had relatives in the western part of NY (for example, brother Lemuel), I think the inclusion of that request is a promising sign, but obviously there is no solid proof that this is the right Abel Monroe.

There is no listing for an Abel Monroe in the NEHGS NY Will Abstracts database, so this Abel Monroe probably died intestate. However, it's possible that land records would help to identify his wife and children.

I've found a public family tree called the Clan Munro Genealogy Database 2009 that has our Abel's death occurring in 1824 in Hudson NY (which matches the newspaper death notice). It also includes a number of additional children. However, I'm not sure whether to trust this, because I *know* the database includes some serious errors. For example, it has the wrong husband and children for my own ancestor Mary Monroe (daughter of Freedom Monroe). I've written to the database owner to see if this error can be corrected, but no response after two weeks. If I hear from them, I'll certainly ask about the source of their information on Abel Munroe.«/i»

«i»Mary Munroe married Elisha Cory of Groton in Lexington on 18 Apr 1780. She is listed as Mary Munroe of Lexington in the marriage record, so I don't think she was living with her father Philip since he had moved to the Rutland / Shrewsbury area long before 1780...

Mary probably died in Groton sometime between 1800 and 1810, because there is a record of the marriage of Elisha Corey to Mrs. Abigail Green of Pepperell on 31 May 1810.

  9. 16.  Lemuel MunroeLemuel Munroe Descendancy chart to this point (3.Philip2, 1.Johanna1) was born on 1 Mar 1759 in Lexington, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, USA; was christened on 4 Mar 1759 in Shrewsbury, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, USA; died on 29 Apr 1857 in Howell, Livingston Co., Michigan, USA; was buried in Howell, Livingston Co., Michigan, USA.

    Notes:

Lemuel Munroe (Monroe) was closely associated with General George Washington in the Revolutionary War. He was a dispatch carrier. He is buried at Lakeside Cemetery, three miles west of Howell, Michigan. The D.A.R. replaced the crumbled monument with a stone which reads, "Lemuel Monroe, 1759-1857 Soldier of the Revolution."

He was a farmer, and a shoe and boot maker. He enlisted in the Revolutionary War in 1776 at the age of 17. He participated in the battle of Bunker Hill and was at Burgoyne's surrender as well as many other engagements. The records of the War of 1812 show he was a private in Capt. Abraham Matison's Company of Col. Philetus Swift's (Ontario County) Regiment of the New York State Militia. He served from 12 May 1812 to 12 Jul 1812. He also served in Sullivan's Campaign in Rhode Island under Capt. Thomas Baker. He was allowed a pension in 1832.

His pension file reads: "Was called out in the militia in November, 1776 at Upton, Mass and served three months. Went first to Dorchester. In spring, 1777 was called out again at Upton and served in Captain Ammidon's Company. Was marched through Mendon to Providence and stationed in the Brick College. There employed to keep guard for three months; then dismissed and went home.

"At Templeton, Worcester County, was mustered in Captain Wilder's Company in Colonel Sparhawk's Regiment and was marched through Deerfield and Charlemont to Bennington in Vermont, and from thence was marched to Tuels Mills and halted some days and then to Batten Kills opposite to Saratoga Flatts. Saw Generals Lincoln, Arnold and Gates. This was at the taking of General Burgoyne. I was not in the Battle, but was in several skirmishes on the out posts and took several prisoners, 18 at one time. Was then ordered back and was part of the guard that went with the prisoners to Winter Hill, near Boston. [2 months]

"In 1779, from Upton was marched to Quanset Point to keep guard, the British Ships being in sight and at anchor. This was in the winter. [3 months] From Barrie, was marched to Danbury and West Point. General MacDougall was in command. I saw him almost daily. I was in Colonel Drury's Regiment. Was engaged in repairing the forts and mounting guard. Discharged late in the fall, and was out five months. Was sick was the reason of my discharge. I think this was the year Cornwallis was taken and near the close of the war. Besides this tour, I was not called out again and did not serve afterwards."

His first wife was Anna Towser (or Tozzer, Tooser, Toozer). Nothing is known about her six children.

His third wife was Martha Rollins (or Rawlings). Her death date is given as 1857, but this doesn't seem likely. She does not appear in the 1850 census with Lemuel, and she did not get a widow's pension after his death. It is more likely that she died in New York some time before.

At the close of the Revolutionary War, Lemuel lived in Northbury, Massachusetts and for forty years lived in Bloomfield, Ontario County, New York.

He moved from Massachusetts to New York and in his old age, he went to Howell, Michigan and made his home with his son, Francis. He died there at the advanced age of 97 years and two months.

One reference notes that "at least four of his sons moved to Michigan; Norton, James, Francis and James. Norton was in the Civil War, enlisted Aug. 14, 1862 in Co. H., 22nd Michigan Infantry." It is not known who "Norton" was or who the other James was.

«i»Lemuel's first marriage probably had 3 males under 10, and one male under 16 by 1800 (William would be 14) 1 female under 10 and 1 female under 16 per census under Munro 1800 Dutchess Co., NY So 3 male children between 1790 and 1800, one male before 1784 roughly and 1790, one female between 1790 and 1800, one female before 1790

In the 1790 census again under Lemuel Munro: Charlton, Worcester Co., MA had two males under 16, one male greater than 16 (probably Lemuel) and 1 female. So males would be born between the earliest 1774 and latest 1790

First wife must have died before 1789. Six children born to marriage, in 1790 there looks to be a father and 3 remaining children 2 boys and a girl. By 1800 the family is 2 parents and 6 children.

Lemuel Monroe, came into the Liberty township MI in May, 1849, and lived with his son, Francis Monroe. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary war, and died April 29th, 1854, at-the age of ninety-five years, one month and twenty-nine days.

Like his eldest brother Philip, Isaac studied medicine. There is a family tradition that he attended the University of Edinburgh medical school in Scotland. A search of the medical records showed no trace of Isaac, but many medical students attended lectures of the famous Doctor Alexander Monro without actually being enrolled in the medical school. During Isaac's time it would have been Alexander Monro Secundus 1733-1817.

Isaac and his wife, Mary, lived in Mary's hometown of Wendell, Massachusetts until 1793 when they moved to Westmoreland, New Hampshire. In 1801 they settled in Surry, New Hampshire. In 1816, Dr. Isaac Monroe moved his family to Hamilton, New York.

  1. 24.  Abel MunroeAbel Munroe Descendancy chart to this point (12.Abel3, 3.Philip2, 1.Johanna1) was born on 3 Nov 1775 in Upton, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, USA; was christened on 30 Oct 1785 in Rutland, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, USA; died about 1835 in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts, USA.

    Notes:

Abel lived in Surry, New Hampshire as early as 1795. He is thought to have lived first in house No. 22 which stood on land bought in 1790 by his uncle, Dr. Philip Munroe. That house was torn down before 1799 and the timbers used to build the second story of house No. 23, which Dr. Munroe opened that year as a tavern.

Abel's wife, Bethany Barron was of Scottish descent and came to New England from Northern Ireland.

In 1799, Abel was carrying on the farm for Widow Brockway after the death of her husband, John. On 18 Jan 1800, Abel took out a license to keep tavern at Widow Brockway's and he continued there until 21 Jun 1805 when the place burned down. In 1803, Abel paid a salary tax of 50 cents. In the census taken during the summer of 1806, he appears as 31 years old, with wife Bethany aged 33, and five children: William aged 9, James 7, Abel 5, John 3, and Rebecca 1.

On 12 Oct 1808, his name is 34th on a list of 51 soldiers who "did military duty with the 4th Co., 20th Regt., the 11th of this instant." On 9 Dec 1811, he took out a license at the Col. Bond house.

Sometime between 1811 and 1818, Abel appears to have moved with his family to Boston, Massachusetts and is found in the Boston Directory of 1818 living on a small street in the North End called Henchman Lane and working as a laborer. Subsequent directories show him living on Lynn Street (1823), Battery Street (1830-1832), Tileston Street (1835). He is no longer listed after 1835.

The death record of his son, Abel, says Abel Sr. was born in Shrewsbury, New Hampshire and that Bethenia was born in Derry, New Hampshire. This information is thought to be in error.

    **********
In the Richard S. Munroe's History and "Genealogy of the Lexington, Massachusetts Munroes" this Abel is listed as the son of Philip and Rebecca rather than the grands. Estelle Wait in an article in NEHGR Vol126 p.240 corrects this "Among the Munroe births recorded at Rutland Mass, is the following 'Abel, grands. Philip & ---- Oct. 30, 1785 bap. C.R.' Surely this was Abel, son of Abel and Rebecca Sadler Munroe, baptized at the age of ten. With his mother dead and his father remarried, he had gone perhaps to Rutland to live with his Munroe Grandparents. Ms Wait also believes Abel Sr. is the first child of the Philip Munroe's marriage to his second wife Abigail, whose baptism appears in the Lexington birth records on 7 Oct. 1750, no parents names being given.

In a paragraph in Mrs. Wait's article Richard S. Munroe that his 1966 genealogy was incorrect and applauded Estelle Waits work.

Abel Jr. then married Bethany Barron at Keene, N.H. 22 SEpt. 1796 He appeared in Surry as early as 1795 and is thought to have lived first in house No.22, which stood on land bought in 1790 by his uncle, Dr. Philip Munroe. It was torn down before 1799 so its timbers could be used for the second story house No.23, which Dr. Munroe opened that year as a tavern.

In 1799 we find Abel Munroe carrying on the farm for Widow Browckway following the death of her husband John. On 18 Jan. 1800 Abel took out a license to keep tavern at Widow Brockway's, and he continue there until 21 June 1805, when the place burned. In 1803 he paid a salary tax of fifty cents. In the census taken during the summer of 1806 he appears as 31 years old, with wife Bethany, aged 33, and five children: William 9, James 7; Abel, 5; John, 3 and Rebecca.

    1. On 12 Oct. 1808 his name is 34th on a list of 51 soldiers who "did military duty with the 4th Co., 20th Regt., the 11th of this instant."
On 9 Dec 1811 he took out a license at the Colonel Bond House, and that is the last glimpse of him at Surry.

Sometime between 1811 and 1818, Abel appears to have removed with his family to Boston, for the Boston Directory of 1818 shows an Abel Munroe, laborer, living on Henchman Lane, a small street in the North End. Abel of Surry and Abel of Boston are undoubtedbly the same man because subsequent directories show Abel, laborer, at the same addresses as men bearing names of sons of Abel of Surry. In 1823, Abel lived on Lynn Street, and William Munroe was on Lynn Street in 1822. From 1830 to 1832 Abel was on Bettery Street, where Jotham Munroe was located in 1830. In 1835 Abel was on Teleston Street: William and Abel Jr were on Tileston in 1831 and later James, John and Jotham Munroe all resided there. After 1835, Abel, the laborer is no longer listed.

  15. 38.  Hollis MunroHollis Munro Descendancy chart to this point (14.Philip3, 3.Philip2, 1.Johanna1) was born on 3 Dec 1789 in Surry, Cheshire Co., New Hampshire, USA; died on 21 Jun 1861 in Belfast, Waldo Co., Maine, USA.

    Notes:

Hollis received his medical degree from Yale College in 1819. Immediately after graduating, he went to Belfast, Maine, not with a view to permanent settlement, but to afford temporary aid to an established physician in a time of prevailing sickness. But Belfast proved to be the scene of his long career of activity and usefulness.

He lived in the house built by Wiggins Merrill. He sang in the choir of the Congregational Church and also lectured for the Belfast Lyceum on Botany on 9, 15, and 22 Jul 1830.

He soon became widely known, and always enjoyed the confidence and esteem both of the community and of his medical brethren. His naturally vigorous and inquiring mind prompted him to keep pace with scientific discoveries, and made him a learner through life. He assiduously cultivated all the branches of natural history, and his love of botany continued unabated to the last.

He possessed no inconsiderable share of mechanical ingenuity, of which he availed himself, with useful results, in dentistry and surgical practice.

He was a singularly sincere man, simple in manner, straightforward and plain in speech. Of social nature, he loved to talk, and out of the stores of a well-furnished mind his conversation was always instructive and profitable. The rules of health and the right modes of living were a favorite topic with him. Many of his wise and timely suggestions were long remembered, and produced incalculable good. He taught temperance in all things, by example as well as precept; for his own mode of living was plain, simple, self-denying, and almost ascetic.

As an example of professional enthusiasm, of single-hearted devotion to the purpose of his calling, he stood eminent. His profession occupied the place of domestic relations. His patients were his family. He refused no call for his services, however poor might be the applicant and however distant his abode; but in cold and stormy nights, and over difficult roads, he would repair to the dwelling of humble poverty, remain as long as his presence was needed, and share the discomforts of the situation.

In 1820, after the separation of Maine from Massachusetts, a new arrangement of the militia was made. Belfast became included in the Third Division, First Brigade, and Second Regiment. Dr. Monroe was Surgeon's Mate.

Dr. Monroe was a member of the Maine Medical Society, formed in 1821, and also of the Maine Medical Association, subsequently instituted. He was also a member of the American Medical Association.

On 23 May 1850 his barn on Lincolnville road, containing 25 tons of hay, burned. The loss was $500.

He died of congestion of the lungs at the age of 71. Rev. Dr. Palfrey delivered an address at his funeral, which was held at the Unitarian Church on the following Sunday. The large concourse of attached friends and sincere mourners who followed his remains to the grave, bore testimony to the esteem in which he was held by the whole community.

  23. 46.  Nahum MunroeNahum Munroe Descendancy chart to this point (14.Philip3, 3.Philip2, 1.Johanna1) was born on 4 Jan 1808 in Surry, Cheshire Co., New Hampshire, USA; died on 23 Apr 1873 in Baltimore, Baltimore (city), Maryland, USA; was buried in Surry, Cheshire Co., New Hampshire, USA.

    Notes:

Nahum owned his father's farm, no. 23, from 1832 until 1837 during which time he was living a portion of the time in Castleton, Vermont.

He studied medicine with his brother, Hollis, and established himself in Belfast, Maine in 1839 soon after graduating at the Albany Medical College. He immediately acquired an extensive practice, which continued until 1871, when he moved to Baltimore, Maryland.

Dr. Monroe ranked with the best of his associates of the profession, as one who upheld the dignity and honor of the physician, and he was by them elevated to the position of President of the Maine Medical Association. He was for a long time Trustee of the Maine Insane Asylum.

In 1865 and 1867, he represented the city of Belfast in the Maine Legislature.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, Dr. Monroe was tendered and accepted the position of Surgeon of the Twentieth Maine Regiment, and entered upon the active duties of the campaign. He was present at the battles of Fredricksburg, Chancellorsville, and United States Ford. At all of these battles his acknowledged skill as a surgeon was of great value to those who were torn by shot and shell in those terrible battles. After a year's service, by which his health was impaired, he resigned his commission, and returned to the practice of his profession in Belfast.

Nahum was a man of great physical powers, and of manners so genial that he won the affeciton as well as the confidence of his patients. But, though rigid in his requirements of others, he was careless of himself, and constant exposure in severe weather broke down his health.

Thousands who experienced his skill and care in sickness and suffering will recall in health as well as in sickness the memory of one whose best days were given to the relief of the unfortunate and distressed, and who left a record every way honorable as a citizen.

On 30 Jul 1872, at midnight, an old unoccupied house near the "muckhole", at the junction of the Lincolnville and old Stanley roads, was consumed by fire. The loss to Dr. Monroe was about $400. It was partially insured.

One authority says he moved to Bangor, Maine and married the daughter of the Governor of Maine.

SOME ARTICLES WILLIAM MONROE I, M.D. SAY DIED OCTOBER 10, 1818.

Dr. MONROE II, was born July 30, 1818, near Cincinnati, Ohio, son of William and Harriet (THURSTON) MONROE, both natives of New York. They had two children, Lucy Ann and William, the former of whom married Major Robert W. GRAY, of South Carolina, and is now deceased. "The father (Dr. William Monroe I) was a student from boyhood, and when he became a man took up the practice of medicine, which was his calling throughout life. He prepared for his professional career in New York, and practiced in Ohio, dying near Cincinnati, when his son William was an infant of two months. His widow married, in 1831, Dr. John LOOFBOUROW, and died in 1835, when forty-six years old. She and her first husband were members of the Baptist church. Lemuel MONROE, the grandfather of our subject, was a veteran of two wars, the Revolution and the war of 1812. He lived to old age, was twice married, and had children by both wives. Daniel Green THURSTON, the Doctor's maternal grandfather, was of English descent, and was a relative of Gen. GREEN, of Revolutionary fame. By occupation he was a farmer. He reached the age of eighty-two, and was the father of fourteen children." From the Centennial article Green Co., Wisconsin History

He died without will so that the administrators Hesekiah Smith and Harriet Thurston Monroe took inventory of his estate and sold his goods and "chattel" at Mechanicsburg, now Westminster Ohio (Butler Co.) Mr. Smith was a Baptist Minister and the founder of Mechanicsburg.

On the membership roles 1817 with wife and sister in law Mary Thirston of the Columbia Baptist Church. «/i»

Also "that in 1790 he was at Canaan, Columbia co., with brother Abel. His children by his first wife 6 in number according to the genealogy are unknown although it seems unreasonable that a marriage of 7 years could produce 6 children. We believe that the Lemuel in Oneida Co. in 1850 is one and include him tentatively. In 1850 Lemuel, Sr was living at Howell, Livingston Co., MI with his son Francis, he now 92 and called "Samuel" by the census taker. There is no probate for him in Livingston Co.,MI.

    Notes:

When Freedom was six years old, his family moved to Ostego, New York. Then in 1808 the family moved again to East Bloomfield, New York. In 1816 he went to Cincinnati, Ohio and stayed until 1824. He then returned to New York and in the same year whent to Michigan, crossing Lake Erie on the steamer Superior, the first passenger ship on the lake. He took up 260 acres of land in Bruce Township, Macomb County, Michigan. In 1868 he sold the farm and moved to Romeo, Michigan with his daughter, Elizabeth.

Freedom and his brother, Benjamin were signers on a petition to Congress by inhabitants of the Territory of Michigan, U.S., for roads to be surveyed and established.

    **********
Freedom wrote to his father, Lemuel, March 5, 1829. Freedom was living at Washington, Macomb County, Territory of Michigan. Before Michigan became a state.

    The letter is as follows:

I once more take my pen in hand to inform you that I am well and hope these few lines may find you enjoying this same blessing. I wrote to you a short time after I got home and sent it by Esquire Gates (Gideon Gates was the postmaster and we see his name in Lemuel Monroe's application for a Revolutionary War pension S.S. 12/6/03). I was at Mr. Algers the first of January, they were well. Benjamin (Lemuels son by Anna Potter and Freedoms brother) was well the last time I heard from him which is the best news I can write of him.

The winter the middle of October. I then thought it best to change my situation if ever. I accordingly took to myself a companion for life. Her name is Mary Elizabeth Cooper, niece of Capt Gad Chamberlain from Lima, New York. I want you to write or get someone to do so as soon as you can if you know where Mr. Beach (his brother in law who married Elizabeth his eldest sister) has gone, to inform me so I can write to them. It may be this is the last letter you may be permitted to read from me.

It appears that you are almost entirely forsaken by your first and second family of children as to seeing or hearing from them except myself but you shall hear from me as often as once a year as long as both of live. I hope the family you are now raising will prove more of a blessing than your children here to fore. You have seen a great deal of trouble in your life. I have witnessed a considerable but may you be blessed with peace and quietness the remainder of your days which will smooth your path to the grave . I have no more give my respects to all inquiring friends.

    remain your affectionate son

Freedom wrote to Lemuel in 1835.

"I received a letter yesterday written in your name by someone else. I expect by your orders informing me of your situation, which was not very agreeable news. Though if you lived I expected to learn something like it sooner or later. I am sorry that of the numerous family you have there is one you have reason to expect help from...

(Regarding Lemuel) It seems to be a singular circumstance that a man and wife should part and be separated for life without anything essential to cause it, but if agreed upon by both I don't know it is well enough. I was in hopes you would get a pension but if the United States does not give you anything for your services in the Revolution for the liberty which they now
enjoy, I hope there will be feelings of humanity enough in the people of the Town of Bloomfield or the County of Ontario to give you a little something.

If you come to Michigan to live with me which I am willing you should if that be your mind. You have lived amongst them the best part of twenty years. They know whether you are a fit subject for their help or not. Money is hard to be got in this country. I could not raise enough to get here...

If you can find a good place for Alexander -- you had better do it. ......... If you had rather come this spring I am willing. And let Alexander come with you if that is your mind if you think he will do well......... (Alexander was Lemuel's 2nd to last son.

    Francis N. Monroe 1837
Francis Monroe was one of the earliest settlers of Livingston County. He passed through what is now the village of Howell before a building had been erected there. His father, Lemuel Monroe, was one of the heroes of the Revolution. He served through that memorable war; participated in the battle of Bunker Hill; was present at Burgoyne's surrender, and in many other engagements. He also served in the war of 1812. Was three times married, and was the father of eighteen children, seventeen of whom grew to maturity. In his old age he came to Howell and made his home with his son Francis, at whose residence he died at the advanced age of ninety-seven years and two months.

Francis Monroe was the eldest of six children by the third wife of his father. She resided at Mendon, N.Y., when her husband was serving in the war of 1812, and for several years thereafter. There Francis was born Aug. 8, 1813. When a lad he was indentured until he was twenty-one years of age, at which time he received the customary one hundred dollars and two suits of clothes. This important event occurred Aug. 8, 1834, and on the 18th day of September of that year he was married to Miss Luana Hicks, of Bristol, N. Y. Her father had died, and from his estate she received one hundred dollars upon her marriage. Mr. and Mrs. Monroe then had a joint capital of two hundred dollars, and plans were soon matured for securing a home. They resolved to go to the then Territory of Michigan, and within a week, Mr. Monroe started on a tour westward.

After prospecting through Eastern Michigan, he located on the southwest quarter of section 28, now the town of Howell. Returning to Bristol he worked by the month some two years, and in the spring of 1837, with his wife and two children, moved on to his land, and commenced the task of creating a home from the unbroken forest. With limited means and few neighbors, he was thrown upon his own resources to procure the necessaries of life. He worked out by the day. The first fall after his arrival he went twelve miles to dig potatoes (for one La Grange, in Unadilla), receiving in payment a bushel of potatoes for a day's work. Money was a thing almost unknown. To pay taxes and the twenty-five cents postage on a letter from the East, were grave questions to the pioneer. Wolves were plenty, and soon a bounty of seventeen, dollars was offered for their scalps. This was most fortunate for Mr. Monroe, who gave them considerable attention; he took as many as three in a week, which rendered him material financial relief.

The progress of the pioneer under these adverse circumstances was necessarily slow; but after the log house was built, the clearing was continued. Year by year improvements were made and other lands added the small clearing expanded to broad and fertile fields, and the log house has long since given place to a large and commodious brick residence, with such surroundings as indicate the thrifty farmer.

By his first wife he had ten children, viz.: Henry O., is a farmer in Wisconsin; F. N., is a hardware merchant in Howell; James M., is a farmer in Ingham County; Norton M., is living on the old homestead; George W., also on a farm in Ingham County; Mary L., married William Bezan, and died at Howell; Luana A. and Helen M., both died unmarried; William H., is a farmer in the town of, Howell; Lucinda M. became the wife of R. B. Morgan, a portrait painter and inventor, and resides at Ann Arbor. The present Mrs. Monroe was a Mrs. Brininstoole, formerly of Batavia, N. Y.

Mr. Monroe and both his wives were members of the Baptist Church of Howell. His first wife was one of the few who organized the church, and he is still a zealous worker in that organization.

In 1871, Mr. Monroe left the farm in charge of his son, Norton M., and purchased a residence in the village of Howell, where he has since resided, enjoying a well-earned competency and the respect of all.

    p. 785 ALEXANDER MONROE. Among the solid business men of Leroy Township, Ingham County, the judgment of no one is more respected and sought than that of him whose name is at the head of this sketch. Farsighted, discreet, prudent, and with high executive ability, he is well qualified to take the lead in matters of finance or local government among his co-laborers. He is a native of New York State, having been born in Ontario County, July 28, 1825. He is a son of Lemuel and Martha (Rolin) Monroe. His father was a Revolutionary soldier, being about sixteen years of age when he joined the army. He was also in the War of 1812, and one of his sons, Archibald Monroe, a half-brother of our subject, gave his life a sacrifice to the freedom of his country in the battle of Queenstown Heights in which the father also fought. Many of the exclusive four hundred of New York who make much of their ancestry as is now the fashion, have not so good a claim to the respect of loyal Americans as has he of whom we write, his father being a twice loyal servitor of the Continental army. On the paternal side of his house Mr. Monroe is Scotch.

Our subject's sire was three times married and he was the father of a large family of children, of whom five only now survive. They are: Francis, Elmira, Abigail, James and Alexander. He of whom we write was reared to manhood in his native county and State. His education was of the most desultory character, having early to give his time and attention to the work of the farm. When only ten years of age he was bound out to Judge Smith, of Ontario County, N.Y., and remained with him until he reached years of majority. The slight advantages that he had in an educational way, were supplemented by study in the winter evenings by the light of the open fireplace.

About 1847 the original of our sketch came to Livingston County, Mich., and resided there a number of years. He then cleared a farm, which he improved to some extent but gave up in order to remove to Ingham County and in 1859 he settled upon the place where he at present resides, having transformed it from its original wild state to that of the most finished agricultural work. He was married October 25, 1850, his bride being Charlotte Smith. She bore him two children--Selden and Dwight, both of whom are now deceased. Mrs. Charlotte Monroe departed this life April 7, 1890. For so many years the sympathetic and tender companion of her husband's career, a great void has been left in his life by her decease. Mr. Monroe is the proprietor and owner of one hundred acres of fine land that is mostly under cultivation. He has served as Township Commissioner, filling the office to the satisfaction of his constituents. A Republican in his political conviction, our subject has the greatest faith in the future prosperity of the country under the execution of the laws as enacted by his party. He is a progressive and public-spirited man, ready and anxious to do all that is for the advantage of individual or general prosperity in his district. Liberal in his religious views, our subject's wife was during her life a member of the Methodist Protestant church. Mr. Monroe is a fine type of the Wolverine pioneer and is greatly respected by all who know him. We take great pleasure in presenting him in this ALBUM to the notice of many who know and highly regard him.«/i»

    Notes:

    **********
«i»Among the quiet and unostentatious, yet thoroughly worthy and efficient members of the business circles of Howell, Livingston County, we are gratified to name one who bears an honorable name, and who, although not claiming descent from the Presidential chair, traces his lineage to a hero in both the War of 1812 and the War of the Revolution.

This citizen was born April 27, 1827, in the township of Richmond, Ontario County, N.Y., and is a son of Lemuel and Martha (Rawling) Monroe, natives of the Eastern States. Lemuel Monroe was a boot and shoemaker, who had served his country nobly in both the Revolutionary War and the conflict of 1812. In his later days he came to Michigan and lived with a son Francis, until called hence by death after he had reached the very venerable age of ninety years. He had been the husband of three wives, and by them had eighteen children, and our subject is the youngest of this patriarchal flock.

The mother of James Monroe died in New York in 1857, and he was reared upon a farm until he reached the age of twenty-four years, but did not live at home after he was eight years old. He made his home with a farmer for nine years, and then at the age of seventeen received the clothes which were commonly given to a bound boy when he left service, and came to Monroe County, Mich. Here he passed four years and then returned to New York, where he worked upon a farm for some four years longer. He then learned the trade of a carpenter, and did not return to Michigan until 1855.

Settling in Howell, the young man now devoted himself to his trade, and took up the broader business of contracting and building. He purchased on Clinton Street, where he now lives, two lots and a house and was married in 1857 to Nancy Garmer, daughter of Amos and Sarah (Eaton) Garmer. Mr. Garmer was a native of Germany, and his wife was a Vermonter, while his daughter was born at Dansville, Livingston County, N.Y. He was a merchant tailor, and carried on a large business at Dansville. They had one other daughter, Maria, who is now Mrs. Leach, of Ionia, this State. The maternal grandfather of Mrs. Monroe was a Eliphalet Eaton, a native of Vermont, who was engaged in the hotel business at Mt. Morris, N.Y., and to him and his wife Betsey (Goodrich) Eaton, were given a family of twelve children.

Mr. and Mrs. Monroe gave to each of their six children an excellent and liberal education, and so brought them up that they have become men and women of intelligence, usefulness and a pronounced Christian character, and they all belong to the Methodist or Baptist Church. The oldest, Libby B., is Mrs. Charles Warren, of Gladwin County, this State, and has two children, Claud and Veroy. Dwight D. has been united in marriage with Miss Millie Beach, and they have a little child, Charles B.; he is a member of the mercantile firm of Monroe Bros., doing business in Howell; George L. is his partner, and they are carrying a fine and well selected stock of dry-goods and groceries, boots and shoes; Ada M. married Arthur Garland, a merchant tailor of Howell, for whom Arthur A., the next brother, acts as clerk; Cora M. is a teacher in the Union schools of Howell, and has a position in the Fourth Ward school. The political views of the father of this prominent and highly respected family, bring him into sympathy and action with the Republican party, and he is an intelligent observer of the great events which must concern every American, and is deeply interested in the prosperity of our Country.

    Notes:

In 1816 when Jay was ten, his family moved from Surry, New Hampshire to Hamilton, New York. This was the year that a volcanic eruption in Indonesia caused northern New England to have no summer.

After finishing the local school at Hamilton, Jay was apprenticed to a stonemason, but when he turned twenty in 1826, he took off for the west. He traveled on the newly completed Erie Canal to Buffalo, New York where he continued on by lake schooner to Detroit, Michigan. He supported himself at first as a stonemason, but his ability and force of character were soon discovered and his services were solicited for more adventurous and ambitious employment.

Mr. Campeau engaged him to go with a part of his men on a circuit of the lakes in the interest of his fir trade. After his return he passed two years in the employ of Mr. Campeau and General Cass in locating lands for incoming settlers.

After a trip to his old home in New York, he returned to Michigan and settled at Prairie Ronde in 1830. The greater part of his time was occupied in traveling over the territory of Michigan locating lands for others. He was thrifty and frugal and applied his commissions in the purchase of lands for himself.

His wandering showed him much of the territory in its state of primeval wilderness. He was the first white man to pass over the site where South Haven now stands. In 1833 he built the first house within the limits of the present city. It was occupied by the Thomas family who recorded the first birth and death in the history of South Haven.

Jay made a plat of the village which was embraced in Hannah's plat of 1852, and has been a part of every one that has been made since. Along with other wise provisions, the plan required the reservation of a lot for a schoolhouse.

In 1835, in association with Charles U. Cross, he laid out a road between South Haven and Paw Paw, and what remains of that highway now is still known as the Munroe road. He had previously laid out a road between South Haven and Prairie Ronde.

Jay married Fanny Rawson on 10 Sep 1836. For some months after thir marriage, they boarded in Kalamazoo. In 1837 they settled on the land owned by Jay in Lawrence township. There he worked on and improved his farm of 900 acres. He also continued to act as land agent, and in time he became one of the most extensive landholders in that part of the country. At one time he possesed 80 eighty-acre tracts, or 6,400 acres in all, an expanse equal to ten square miles.

Under the territorial government of Michigan, Jay was appointed a judge, and from then to the end of his life he was always known as Judge Monroe. He was a man of benign disposition, his administration of the law always tempered justice with mercy. He was a friend and adviser of the early settlers. He served as commissioner of the poor in Van Buren County for more than twenty-five years. He was earnest in his interest and active in his support of all public undertakings for the good of the state. He helped to organize the State Agricultural Society, and was one of the founders of the Van Buren County Pioneers' Society. To the end of his life, he was one of the Pioneers' Society's most active members. In politics he was a life-long Democrat. In spiritual matters he was a firm believer in the Christian religion, but not connected by membership with any church organization.

Jay died in South Haven soon after returning from a visit to the Centennial Expositon in Philadelphia.

Fanny, Jay's wife, was universally beloved throughout the city of South Haven. She raised nine children on a farm which was remote from other human dwellings. The nearest neighbor was about a mile distant. She did all the writing and figuring required by her husband's business, including his land agency. Because the home was located in about the center of the county, it became a sort of halfway house for strangers and travelers. There were almost always extra persons to provide for with meals and lodging. After the death of her husband, Fanny stayed with her daughter Eunice in South Haven. She died at the age of 92.
