  2. 3.  Charles Jay MonroeCharles Jay Monroe Descendancy chart to this point (1.Fanny1) was born on 20 Nov 1839 in Lawrence, Van Buren Co., Michigan, USA; died on 2 Oct 1919.

    Notes:

Hon. Charles Jay Monroe. If the people of Van Buren county were challenged to name an admirable product the high type of their citizenship they might with eminent propriety say: "Here is Hon. Charles Jay Monroe--show us his fellow! Behold the fruit and the representative of our civilization! 'of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble-bush gather the grapes!'." In every field of duty and his have been numerous, and in every relation of life, Mr. Monroe has exemplified sterling manhood, elevated citizenship, and all the other fine attributes of the genuine American gentleman.

Mr. Monroe is wholly a product of Van Buren county. He was born in the township of Lawrence on 20 Nov. 1839. He obtained his elementary education and first impressions of his relations to his fellow men in the country school near his home. He grew to manhood on his father's farm and did his part of the labor necessary for its cultivation, acquiring therein habits of useful industry, a practical knowledge of farming, and an interest in his native soil that has grown with his years and been intensified by his experience. The activities, aspirations and tendencies of the people of this locality have also been objects of the greatest interest to him at all times, for he has been one of them and fully imbued with their spirit and in sympathy with their desires.

Moreover, he taught their children in the schools, surveyed their land, served them wisely and faithfully in many important public capacities, and in time became, in large measure, their banker. And when, in the pride and power of his young manhood, he bowed beneath the flowery yoke of Eros, he united himself in marriage with one of their most estimable and accomplished young ladies, with whom he walked life's troubled way for over forty years.

Mr. Monroe is of Scottish ancestry on his father's side of the house. His grandfather, Isaac Monroe, was a physician who lived in Surry, New Hampshire. In 1816 he moved to Hamilton, Madison County, New York, where he passed the remainder of his days. He reared a family of eleven children, of whom his son Jay R. Monroe, the father of Charles, Jay, was the eighth in the order of birth, and came into being on April 11, 1806, in Surry, New Hampshire, where the family was then living.

About the time Charles Jay Monroe completed his seventeenth year the State Agricultural College was ready to receive students, and he was one of the first to be enrolled. He was present at its opening session, and remained under its beneficent instructions two years and a half. Then, on account of weakness in his eyes, he was obliged to give up his studies. His father, however, found employment for him that he was able to attend to by placing him in charge of the land agency business he was conducting. In connection with this he taught school eight terms, and also did surveying in Van Buren and Allegan counties, serving as county surveyor for the former two terms, and being in frequent requisition for work in the same line in the latter, both while he was in office and afterward.

In Jan 1867, in partnership with S. R. Boardman, Charles opened a private bank, which was the first enterprise of that kind in South Haven. In 1871 the First National Bank of South Haven was organized, with Mr. Boardman as president and Charles as cashier of the institution. After serving the bank as cashier for some four years, Charles was elected vice president and the next year president. He held this position until 1889, when the bank was reorganized as the First State Bank of South Haven. He was chosen president of the new organization.

In 1879, Charles pursued a course of instruction in the law department of the University of Michigan, not with any intention of practicing the profession, but to assist him in carrying on his many business ventures. As he stated the case, he had more business than knowledge, so he quit business for a time to obtain more knowledge. In 1880 or 1881, he organized the West Michigan Savings Bank of Bangor, and he served as its president until he sold his interest in it. He also organized the Kalamazoo Savings Bank, and was its president for some years. In addition, he was president of the Van Buren county Pioneers' Society, and one of the most active men connected with that organization.

In politics, Charles gave his allegiance steadfastly and continuously to the Republican party, and as its candidate, was elected township supervisor for three terms, county surveyor for two terms, and school inspector for many years. In 1883, he was elected state senator for Van Buren and Allegan counties, and to this office he was twice re-elected, serving three consecutive terms in all. In the state senate he was chairman of the committee on banks and banking and a member of other important committees. He was the author of the banking law at the time, which he had enacted while he was in the senate. In his last term he was unanimously elected president pro tempore of the senate, and during the term, he was in the chair almost every day.

The interests of South Haven were of great importance to Charles, and he did his part in promoting them. He built a number of brick business blocks and other houses, and did valuable work in many ways for the advancement and improvement of the city. He also gave the welfare and progress of the county his careful and helpful attention, looking after its interests in every field of effort, intellectual, moral, social and business afairs. His farm of three hundred and twenty acres was in the country, just outside of South Haven, and it was a source of considerable addition to the mercantile and commercial wealth of the county. Here he carried on for some years an extensive dairy business, which was a great convenience to the residents of the city and townships, and on the farm he raised large quantities of fine fruit, of various kinds, his peach orchard alone comprising thirty acres, with the other orchards in proportion.

In Jun 1911, he was elected president of the Michigan Bankers Association. He was a Freemason of Royal Arch degree.

Van Buren county has never had a citizen whom its people esteemed more highly or more universally, or one who was more worthy of their confidence, and hearty regard and good will. He had the good fortune of being estimated at his real value during his life, which is a rare experience among men, and must have been due to merit made clear and services beyond question.

  4. 5.  Isaac MonroeIsaac Monroe Descendancy chart to this point (1.Fanny1) was born on 6 May 1844 in Lawrence, Van Buren Co., Michigan, USA; died in 1924.

    Notes:

Isaac was born at the old homestead in Lawrence, Michigan, and was raised on his father's farm. He received a good education in the home school and attended the Decatur schools for six months.

His father gave him a tract of wild land located near South Haven. He began to clear and improve the land but soon became tired of that kind of work and returned home.

At the time, he knew nothing about the care of horses, but became interested in improving his own stock. He learned from his brother, who was a great lover of horses, and in 1866, Isaac bough a thoroughbred mare named "Kittie." While Isaac was engaged extensively in the lumber and charcoal business over the years, Kittie bred sixteen colts. The high quality of these colts convinced Isaac to give his attention to stock breeding, and he acquired an impressive stable of mares. In 1890, "Tariff" and "Free Trade" took the first premium as a foal team in Chicago.

When his father died in 1876, Isaac inherited the farm in Lawrence. He proved to be a person who could successfully carry on several different lines of business at the same time, being a very prominent farmer, stock breeder, and lumberman in Van Buren County. In 1890, he lost three of his barns to fire.

Isaac was a firm Democrat, and cast his first presidential vote in 1868. Although his township was strongly Republican, he was elected to the office of Supervisor on two occasions. He was amember of the Masonic order, and whith his wife was identified with the Baptist Church in Lawrence.

  7. 8.  Lyman Sylvester MonroeLyman Sylvester Monroe Descendancy chart to this point (1.Fanny1) was born on 28 Mar 1851 in Lawrence, Van Buren Co., Michigan, USA; died on 7 Feb 1910 in South Haven, Van Buren Co., Michigan, USA.

    Notes:

Lyman was born on his parents' farm in Lawrence, Michigan. After graduation from high school in Decatur, Michigan, he studied at Parson's Business College in Kalamazoo in 1871. He was then employed by his uncle, L. T. Rawson, in his grain trading business in Decatur.

In Apr 1873, Lyman took a job as bookkeeper in the First National Bank of South Haven, which had been founded two years earlier by his oldest brother, Charles, and S. R. Boardmen. By 1875, Lyman was assistant cashier. In 1878 he succeeded his brother Charles as cashier when Charles stepped up to Vice President. Lyman held this position for 21 years. During this time, he was the de facto operating head of the bank. In 1889, the bank was reorganized as the First State Bank of South Haven.

Lyman and Carrie J. Curtiss married in 1876. Two years after their wedding, they moved into a beautiful large house which they had built on the north side of South Haven. This house in the Victorian style of its time was described as one of the finest and most beautiful houses in South Haven. Their three children were born there and their eldest daughter died there. For many years they lived a happy affluent life. Devout Baptists, there were known as pillars of the local Baptist Church where Lyman served for many years as treasurer.

In 1899, Lyman resigned as cashier of the bank to devote full time to his large real estate holdings. He had inherited a large amount of agricultural land from his father, and by shrewd and prudent investment, he added greatly to his holdings which included resort cottages, hotels, and town properties. His 60-acre peach orchard was partially within the village limits of South Haven. He maintained his connections with the bank by remaining on the board of directors.

In 1902, he organized a private unincorporated banking company, the South Haven Loan & Trust Company, which he operated with a partner, Eugene Allen Hartman. In 1906, he was elected president of the Bank of South Haven, when his brother was promoted from president to Chairman of the Board.

Lyman was a registered Republican, but he was not active in politics.

In 1907, a disastrous late spring frost destroyed the crops in southwestern Michigan, including the local peaches. Besides a total loss of his own peach crop and defaulted loans to his private banking company, Lyman Monroe, as a business leader in the community, co-signed many loans on the Bank of South Haven to fruitgrowers in the area. While these defaulted loans did not completely destroy Lyman financially, they took the bulk of his fortune.

After several years of failing health, he died in 1910. He was deeply mourned by the people of South haven who recognized his strong devotion to the community.

  9. 10.  Jay Randolph Monroe, Jr.Jay Randolph Monroe, Jr. Descendancy chart to this point (1.Fanny1) was born on 1 Jan 1859 in Lawrence, Van Buren Co., Michigan, USA; died on 10 Jun 1888 in South Haven, Van Buren Co., Michigan, USA; was buried in South Haven Cem., South Haven, Van Buren Co., Michigan.

    Notes:

Jay was born at the old family homestead in Lawrence. He was a very good-looking young man who went to South Haven, Michigan when he was thirteen to further his studies. He graduated from the local agricultural college and from the University of Michigan, Class of 1880.

He was imployed by the First State Bank of South Haven, and he took to the banking business with the same great gusto and interest which motivated others in his family. After only four years at the South Haven bank, he was offered a banking positon in Kalamazoo in 1884. When the Kalamazoo Savings Bank was organized, he was named Cashier. This was a very responsible position for a youth of barely twenty-five years, and indicates his exceptional abilities.

He achieved both business and social success in his few brief years in Kalamazoo. In early Jun 1888, he was suddenly seized with a rare intestinal malady which caused a complete stoppage and very severe pain. The promising young banker, who had been described as in the prime of robust manhood just a few days before his sudden illness, suffered greatly before his death.

He was buried in the family plot in South Haven cemetery. Because of his sudden tragic death, the family erected an especially large gravestone inscribed with a cross and the words, "He sleepeth."

Oliver was only twelve years old when his mother Mary Monroe Foote died of typhoid fever in September 1872. J. R. Foote, Oliver's father, became incapacitated so Oliver went to live with his uncle C. J. Monroe in South Haven. In 1876 at age sixteen, Ollie, as he was called, went to work at his uncle's bank. Charles Jay Monroe, it is said, looked upon his nephew with all the affection of a father. Another uncle, L. S. Monroe, only nine years older than his nephew was also very fond of him. Oliver Foote was said to have been a splendid young man in every respect. Oliver did very well at the Bank of South Haven. His proud uncles were grooming their favorite for a top managerial post there when much to the sorrow of the entire community Oliver R. Foote was drowned in Lake Michigan in July 1882. Oliver was an expert swimmer and boat handler. When the small rowboat in which he had escourted Miss Kittie Underwood, a young lady visitor from Aurora, Illinois capsized, Oliver went to the rescue of Kittie. When the waves carried the boat beyond their reach, their fate was sealed. Oliver was one of the most popular people in South Haven. His tragic death in the twenty-second year of his life was a bitter blow felt by the whole community. It had a profound effect on the Monroe family for many years.

  2. 12.  Stephen Blackmar MonroeStephen Blackmar Monroe Descendancy chart to this point (3.Charles2, 1.Fanny1) was born on 11 Jun 1869 in South Haven, Van Buren Co., Michigan, USA; died on 12 Mar 1946 in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, USA.

    Notes:

Stephen was born on his parents' farm in South Haven. He was named for his maternal grandparents. He attended the local schools, and in 1891, he graduated from the University of Michigan Law School, after which he began a legal practice specializing in probate, financial, and real estate matters.

In 1901, he moved to Kalamazoo to work for the Kalamazoo Savings Bank, which his father had founded in 1884. He became a director of the bank two years later. Stephen lived the rest of his life there, and played a large role in the industrial and commercial life of the city. By the time of his death, he had aided in the development of more than a score of important local business and manufacturing concerns.

Stephen eventually became president of the Kalamazoo Savings Bank. Serving with him at the bank was Charles A. Peck and his brother, Horace. They were older men who recognized in Stephen a keen business acumen. They were engaged in the financing of fledgling industries and were happy to find a younger man to help them carry on.

Another young man who became associated with the Peck brothers at about the same time, was Alfred B. Connable from the village of Petosky in northern Mchigan. Alfred married Horace Peck's daughter. Stephen and Alfred began an association which lasted until Stephen died in 1946.

The two friends and some others provided the original capital for the Monroe Calculating Machine Company, which Stephen's younger cousin Jay Randolph organized in 1912. Stephen and Alfred served on the board of that company for many years until they retired. Stephen's two sons and Alfred's three sons all played important roles in the company in later years.

    Notes:

In 1886, Arthur was six years old when his father, David F. Moore, was killed in an accident involving a horse-drawn vehicle. He grew up on the shore of Lake Michigan where his parents had built a beautiful, large Victorian house next door to his mother's brother, Lyman S. Monroe. Lyman's daughter, Louise, and his son, Jay Randolph, were close in age to Arthur, and the three cousins grew up almost like siblings and remained life-long friends.

Arthur attended public schools in South Haven and played football at South Haven High School. In the 1890's, football was far rougher than it became in later years. He studied law at the University of Michigan. His mother wanted him to run the hardware business founded by his father. His cousin, Jay, persuaded Arthur to try his hand at selling calculating machines for a short time, but he ultimately went into banking.

He became director of the First State Bank in 1918, and in 1922, he was made assistant cashier. He became executive vice-president in Jan 1933, and was elected president in 1937, serving until the First State Bank was merged with the Bank of South Haven in 1943. He served as vice president and director of the merged bank until his death in 1950.

During World War II, Arthur was chairman of the South Haven draft board. He was a very patriotic person but he had deep compassion for people. He took his job very seriously. When some of "his boys" became casualties, the effect on him was extremely severe, affecting his health.

When he died on 9 Jun 1950, the whole city of South Haven closed down in mourning for its most beloved son. More than thirty years after his death, Wayne Works, who had married Arthur's granddaughter, Jane Skeen, won an election to the South Haven City Council. Mr. Works reported that he won the senior citizen vote overwhelmingly because of his connection to Arthur Moore.

    Notes:

Jay was named after his grandfather, Judge Jay R. Monroe, the founder of the town of South Haven, Michigan, and for his uncle, Jay R. Monroe, Jr., a banker in Kalamazoo, who died at an early age. Jay grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan where he first took an interest in sailing.

He attended Stetson University in Florida and Kalamazoo college in Michigan. In 1906, he graduated from the University of Michigan Law School and was admitted to the Michigan bar. He did not pursue a legal career and did not enter the family banking business, but went to work for the Western Electric Company in Chicago. Assigned to the accounting department, he first became acquainted with the rather primitive adding and calculating machines which were just coming on the market at that time.

Jay was interested in these mechanical devices and began to develop ideas for improvements. In 1907, a disastrous spring frost ruined the fruit crop in southwestern Michigan, causing Jay's father, Lyman Monroe, to suffer grave financial losses which nearly wiped out his fortune. Jay, who had been brought up in relative affluence was on his own. That same year, the Western Electric Company transferred him to Pittsburgh, where he met his future wife.

Jay was transferred again in 1910, this time to New York City. He and his new wife, settled in East Orange, New Jersey. There Jay met Frank Stephen Baldwin, who had invented a remarkable calculator in 1874. Baldwin had made vigorous efforts to commercialize his invention but had been unsuccessful. It was said that the machine was ahead of its time. When Jay saw Baldwin's latest model of 1908, he realized that this machine with improvements would have a great potential.

Frank Baldwin was seventy-three years old when the two met in 1911. He was delighted that Jay, aged twenty-eight recognized the worth of his machine. Jay left Western Electric and worked with Baldwin to perfect the machine which would perform the four rules of arithmetic in a manner so straightforward and simple that it could be operated by the average person without the necessity of special training.

Frank and Jay became close friends. Baldwin gladly sold his patents to Jay who assigned them to the newly organized Monroe Calculating Machine Company which was incorporated in Apr 1912. Jay's first cousin, Stephen B. Monroe, and a group of his associates in Kalamazoo, Michigan, provided the original capital.

The company was begun on a very small scale. It was an enormous effort to organize production and to set up a sales force. The first years were difficult and discouraging. By 1915 the corner was turned. The famous K model introduced in 1921 became a world-wide success. This was followed by a full line of automatic calculating machies which became the leaders in the industry.

Jay pioneered many innovations in enlightened industrial relations. He was greatly respected and loved by his employees who numbered nearly 3000 at the time of his death. He has been characterized as an industrialist with a heart. His motto: "The pursuit of a definite ideal" resulted in the Monroe spirit which lived long after his death in the company he founded.

Jay was a devoted husband and father who experienced more than his share of grief. His oldest son, Jay Randolph, Jr. (IV), died in 1914 at the age of three. Nine years later in 1923, his wife, Bette, died at the age of 34. His second wife, Edith, died in 1931.

Because of health reasons, he had been advised to seek outdoor exercise, so after his company was well established, he took up golf. He loved the game and became quite good at it. He became close personal friends with Bobby Jones, Clif Roberts and other well known figures in the golfing world. He was one of the founders of the Augusta National Golf Club and a member of several golf clubs including Baltusrol, Canoe Brook, Essex County, the Knoll and Pine Valley in New Jersey, and many others. He had a reputation as the nicest guy to caddy for in New Jersey.

In 1932, he married Ethlyn Wheeler of Proctorsville, Vermont. He died suddenly in April 1937 of a massive cerebral hemmorrhage. He was 54 years old. His death was a bitter blow to his family and his company. There was a power struggle there which lasted for ten years.

Jay Monroe was a man of sterling character, upright and honest in all his dealings. These qualities were happily recognized in his lifetime. He was a natural leader who was looked up to by all who knew him. In 1958, his widow and son established a modest charitable foundation in his memory so that his generous spirit could be perpetuated.
