Edward's mother died when he was just one year old. He was the second of two children. When his father died in 1862, he moved to Fitchburg, Massachusetts where he was raised by his uncle, John Burney.
He married the daughter of Joseph Dautaud of St. Valentin, St. John, Quebec. Shortly after her birth, she and her parents moved to Danvers, Massachusetts.
Edward and Adele later moved to Brookline, Massachusetts. They had four children.
