**********
The following is from «u»History and Genealogy of the Lexington, Mass. Munroes«i», «/u»«/i»p. 28-29:
«i»A record of his «/i»[Josiah's] «i»baptism conflicts with that of his birth. Two records of his marriage conflict with each other, and both are probably erroneous. Certain it is, that he married at Canterbury, Sarah Hyde, near the beginning of the year 1752. He inherited in 1755. a portion of his father's estate, and may have lived upon it.
Nothing further is known of his life until the breaking out of the Revolutionary War. As the news of the battle of Lexington spread, the local militia everywhere fell in, in large numbers under their own officers, and, without waiting for orders or authority, marched for the scene of conflict. This action was afterwards legalized and lists made of the soldiers who went. The spontaneous character of the service is indicated by the language used; and Josiah Munroe was one of those who from Canterbury, "Marched for the relief of Boston in the Lexington alarm." On this occasion he held the rank of sergeant and was in the service eight days, in April, 1775.
July 11, 1775, he enlisted as a private in the 7th company of the 8th regiment, afterwards adopted into the Continental Army. In September his regiment was ordered to Boston, where it remained till the expiration of the term of service, and Josiah was discharged December 15, 1775.
The following year Captain Timothy Bachus organized in Canterbury a company of "Independent Veterans" of which Josiah was a member. This company did duty at New London in September, and in October at West Chester, N.Y.
April 14, 1777, he enlisted "to serve during the war" in Captain Elisha Lee's company of the 4th Connecticut regiment of the Continent Line, commanded by Col John Durkee. His regiment went into camp at Peekskill. In September it joined Washington's army in Pennsylvania and "marched in the Connecticut Brigade" under General McDougal. At Germantown, October 4, they fought on the left flank. Later his regiment was assigned to Varnum's Brigade and engaged in the desperate defense of Fort Mifflin, November 12 to 16. They wintered at Valley Forge where Josiah died in camp February 19, 1778.
A constant tradition of his death in camp in the service of the Continental Army has come down among the descendants of his son, David; and his death in February, 1778, is recorded in a little memorandum kept during her lifetime by his daughter, Sarah, and now in the possession of Mrs. Daniel T. Bennett, of Marilla, N.Y.
The record of Josiah's last enlistment and death was obtained from the War Department in the following letter.
1843890 WAR DEPARTMENT
The Adjutant General's Office
Washington, November 2, 1911
Respectfully returned to Mr. B.A. Dunn.
801 N. County St.
Waukegan, Illinois
The records of this office show that one Josiah Munroe served as private in Captain Elisha Lee's Company, 4th Connecticut Regiment, commanded by Colonel John Durkee, Revolutionary war. He enlisted April 14, 1777, to serve during the war, and died February 19, 1778. Nothing further relative to him has been found of record.
F.C. Ainsworth,
The Adjutant General
Per 4.
The record of Josiah's previous service in the Connecticut Militia was obtained principally from the published volume, «/i»Connecticut Men in the Revolution«i». I have been particular to give the above letter from the war department, because in this volume, on page 188 is found «/i»exactly the same record«i», but the first name is Joseph instead of Josiah. Inasmuch as there was but one Joseph Munroe from Connecticut in the Revolutionary war, whose record I also have from the Adjutant General's office at Hartford, Connecticut, and who survived the war; and since the record referred to on page 188 of «/i»Connecticut Men in the Revolution«i» actually is the record of Josiah and not of Joseph, I assume that the name «/i»Joseph«i» is there an error, and should have been Josiah.
In Volume XII of the publication of the Connecticut Historical Society, Josiah's name is found on page 64 in a list from Canterbury of "men died in the service hired for three years and during the war."
Apparently Josiah died intestate; and no inventory of his estate is to be found on the probate records. But at a session of the Probate court for the district of Plainfield held July 6, 1779, "the widow Sarah Munrow, administratrix of the estate of Mr. Josiah Munrow, late of Canterbury, deceased, exhibited into Court on account of Sundry Debts and Costs found to be due" an order, "for the distribution of said estate to be paid by the several heirs as follows -- to rates paid Mr. Gordon, 4, 4, 1; to the distributors, 14, 8, 1; to the Court of Probate, 4, 4, 0 in Continental money." The figures were for pounds, shillings and pence.

The James Monroe reference gives the birth date for Josiah's wife, Sarah, as 12 Sep 1732.

32. | Isaac Monroe (9.Samuel2, 1.Deborah1) was born in 1745 in Canterbury, Windham Co., Connecticut, USA; died on 1 Aug 1825 in Plymouth, Chenango Co., New York, USA. Notes:
Isaac lived in Pomfret from 1768 until after 1785, in Brooklyn in 1800 and in Greene, Chenango County, New York in 1818.
He was a private in the Revolutionary War, first in 1775. When the Lexington Alarm sounded he responded and served with the militia near Boston for twenty days, afterwards he enlisted in Pomfret, 1 Jan 1776, and served one year in Captain Grosvenor's company of Colonel John Durkee's regiment.
In May 1798 he purchased a fulling mill in Lebanon, Connecticut, from his son Dan and sold it to James Sexton the following year by deed witnessed by his son Dan and daughter Lucy.
In 1818 he applied for a pension which was granted in 1820. He was a soldier by trade. His application was supported by affidavit of his brother William and his comrade in arms, Jonathan Crane. His own affidavit, sworn to in 1820, states that he was a saddler by trade, with no family, unable to labor, in indigent circumstances and residing with and supported by his son Joseph in Greene.
His name appears on the records in Pomfret and Brooklyn and on the index to the deeds in Lebanon as Isaac Row. In the body of the Lebanon deeds his surname is spelled Mon Row and Munrow. The latter spelling of his surname appears in his signature, also in that of his son Dan and daughter Lucy, witnessing the deeds to James Sexton. Notwithstanding these discrepancies in spelling his surname upon the records, his identity is amply proven by the affidavit of his brother William Monroe, stating that he and Isaac were brothers, also by existing family records, among which are his son Joseph's family Bible in the possession of E.L. Monroe in Columbus, Pennsylvania stating that Joseph was born 25 Sep 1776 and separate family records prepared by each of his grandsons, Dyer Monroe, and James Sexton Monroe, the former now in the possession of Dyer's grandmother, Mrs. Estella Hughes in Plymouth, New York, the latter with James Sexton's daughter, Mrs. Ella M. Axline of Ada, Ohio, until her death in 1930. Each of these two records state that their father, Dan, son of Isaac Monroe, was born in Pomfret 22 Aug 1774. These dates exactly correspond with the dates shown by the Pomfret records when sons Joseph and Dan were born to Isaac Row.
Isaac died at the home of his son Dan Monroe in Plymouth, New York.

34. | Leonard Monroe (9.Samuel2, 1.Deborah1) was born on 11 Oct 1757 in Willmington, , Connecticut, USA; died on 3 Aug 1827 in , Delaware Co., Ohio, USA. Notes:
Leonard enlisted as a private in Captain Ball's Company, Colonel Samuel B. Webb's Fourth Connecticut Regiment in East Windsor, Connecticut, 14 Mar 1777. He was later transferred to Captain Whitney's Company, same regiment, where he was appointed sergeant. He remained in the service until honorably discharged in Morristown, New Jersey, 17 Mar 1780.
He, his mother and his brothers Isaac and William, his uncle David Welch, and David's sons, John, Aaron and Ebenezer Welch moved to Chenango County, New York.
Leonard was commissioned lieutenant in the State Militia in 1793 and Captain in 1798. He was placed on the Revolutionary soldier's pension roll 21 Jun 1819. His application states that he was a tailor by trade.
In 1804 he and John, Aaron and Ebenezer Welch moved to Liberty Township, then in Franklin, now in Delaware County, Ohio. The Monroe and Welch families were closely related by marriage. David Welch married Amitty Read, sister of Samuel Monroe's wife Abigail. John married his cousin, Deborah Monroe, sister of Leonard.
Leonard Monroe married four times but only his first and last wives' names are known. He appears to have been a widower in Nov 1807 when he conveyed land by deed recorded in book 1, page 556, Delaware County Deed Records, containing no mention of a wife, while the deeds subsequently made by him in 1814 and 1815 recorded in Book 3, pages 185 and 512 were signed by his wife Hannah Monroe.

35. | William Monroe (9.Samuel2, 1.Deborah1) was born on 16 May 1761 in Willington, , Connecticut, USA; died on 30 Apr 1838 in Plymouth, Chenango Co., New York, USA; was buried in Plymouth, Chenango Co., New York, USA. Notes:
William served nearly four years as a soldier in the Revolutionary War, first from 6 Apr to 23 May 1777 under Captain Edward Griswold in Colonel Thomas Bilding's regiment, Connecticut Volunteers. He was discharged in Peekskill, New York. He next enlisted for three years in Captain Harmon's company of Colonel John Durkee's Fourth Regiment of Connecticut Volunteers from which he was honorably discharged in 1780 in Morristown, New Jersey.
During his first year he served as a private, then was transferred to Captain Seth Phillip's company of the same regiment, in which he served as a fifer for two years. He engaged in the battles of Germantown, Fort Mifflin, Monmouth and Stoney Point. After his discharge in 1780 he served for six months as orderly sergeant to his old Colonel John Durkee. Later he served a three month's term on a sloop in New York. His interest in military affairs did not abate with the revolution.
He moved in 1792 from Windsor, Connecticut to Chenango County, New York, and settled there on a tract on which the court house in the city of Norwich now stands. There he joined the State Militia serving as ensign, lieutenant, major, and lieutenant colonel between 1797 and 1809. By reason of this service he became generally known as Colonel Monroe.
He served three terms as sheriff of Chenango County and as the member of the Assembly from that county during the session of 1816.
William moved to a farm in the nearby town of Plymouth, New York, where he built a log house and lived until he died. He, his mother and other members of the Monroe family were buried in a cemetery on his farm between Norwich and the village of Plymouth.
His first wife, Sally, was a descendant of John and Eleanor Billington of the Mayflower. Her tombstone in the family cemetery in Chenango County, bears this inscription: "In memory of Mrs. Sally Monroe, consort of Colonel William Monroe, d. Feb. 19, 1811 in the 46th year of her age."

«i»Josiah Munro, Patriot
by Richard (Dick) Smith and Cheryl Smith Gosselin
On September 26, 2010, the Ann Story Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution dedicated a bronze memorial plaque commemorating the service of Josiah Munro. He enlisted in the Connecticut Regiment in May, 1781, at the age of seventeen and served for three years as Private. He was dismissed from service in 1784. The dedication service was held at the site of Josiah's tombstone in the Old Mettowee Cemetery in Pawlet, Vermont.
Josiah Munro Jr. was born January 25, 1764 in Canterbury, Connecticut, son of Josiah Munro and his wife Mary Hyde. Sadly his father died February, 1778, at Valley Forge. Josiah married Susana Andrus, and soon after the two of them moved with her family to Pawlet, Vermont, where they are found in the 1790 Census. Josiah again served his country during the War of 1812 as Captain of the Artillery with the Vermont Militia. He was known to many as "captain" even after the war.
Josiah died November 9, 1846, and he and Susana are buried together in the Old Mettowee Cemetery. In 1884 one of their descendants, Hattie Monroe, married a member of the Smith family, who was also from Pawlet, Josiah is the 4th great-grandfather of the author, Richard (Dick) Smith, who is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. His daughter, Cheryl, is a member of the Ann Story Chapter of the DAR.
Also present at the ceremony were members of the Smith and Gosselin families and family friends. The West Rutland Boy Scout Troop 116 attended as Color Guard, and Taps was played by a local bugler. Refreshments were served by the DAR following the dedication, bringing a warm conclusion of fellowship to the solemn, but joyous memorial service of this Patriot.«/i»

45. | David Munroe (12.Josiah2, 1.Deborah1) was born on 26 Sep 1768 in Canterbury, Windham Co., Connecticut, USA; died on 31 Jul 1837 in Pittsford, Hillsdale Co., Michigan, USA. Notes:
David migrated to Pawlet, Vermont a few years after his brother, Josiah and sister, Lydia. Soon after his marriage, he settled at Cooperstown, New York. In about 1800 he moved to Penfield, New York. In 1836 he sold his farm and with his children went to Pittsford, Michigan. there he established a new homestead in Pittsford Township Sec. 28.
David was a large man and his strength was said to have been equal to that of any two of his neighbors. For many years he served as a deacon in the Baptist Church in Penfield. His granddaughter described him as "a noble man of Scot Descent, of generous impulse, and strong religious convictions."
David and his children overwintered the first year in a temporary shelter built into the side of a hill. The following year a cabin was built. A lilac bush stood by the front door and a snowball bush at the northwest corner of the home. David died that year.
His will bequeathed to his son, Lester, "the farm on which he now lives" designated as the west half of the N.E. quarter of Section 32 in Pittsford Township. To Linus he bequeathed the west half of the N.W. quarter of Section 28, Pittsford Township. To Philenda he gave all the household furniture and the lot of land 50A adjoining on the east.

96. | Daniel Monroe (32.Isaac3, 9.Samuel2, 1.Deborah1) was born on 22 Aug 1774 in Lebanon, New London Co., Connecticut, USA; died on 12 Feb 1854 in Plymouth, Chenango Co., New York, USA. Notes:
Daniel's first business venture, of which there is an account, was the purchase of a fulling mill in Lebanon, Connecticut, which he operated until he sold it to his father in May 1798. He remained in Lebanon until near the close of 1800, when he moved to Berkshire County, Massachusetts. There he remained until 1816, residing first in Pittsfield, next in Sandisfield and lastly in Tyringham. In 1800 at Pittsfield, he bought an antiquated fulling mill from Valentine Rathburn, Sr., who had owned it since 1770. Smith's "History of Pittsfield" says "It was none of your newfangled German inventions, but an old fashioned, double-action crankmill, driven by a three-foot, open-bucket water wheel, only warranteed to run in a high freshet or a long spell of weather." Daniel equipped the mill with new and improved machinery and sold it to Daniel Stearns in 1801.
In 1816, he and his family moved to Plymouth, New York, where he built and resided in a log house, one of the first dwellings in the town. He built a carding mill there, which he and a partner operated, under the firm name of Monroe and Locke, until the year 1839. He also built another carding mill at the neighborhing village of Sherburne Four Corners.
Daniel served as a lieutenant in the War of 1812 in Captain John Wilson's company, Colonel Prentice William's Second regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers.
His first wife was the daughter of John Sexton.

Linus was a tanner and currier by trade and also operated a boot and shoe store. He had a prosperous business near Rochester, New York, but he had to sell because of failing health. In Aug 1836 he went to the wilds of Michigan with his father and their families. One brother and a sister had preceded them a year before. Linus settled on land which he inherited from his father in Pittsford, Hillsdale County, where he became a farmer and continued to reside until his death. The bulk of his father's homestead remained in Linus' family. Clare Monroe, a great-grandson of Linus, now lives on the homestead at 11131 Union Road, Pittsford, Michigan.
It has been noted that Linus never talked to his children about his childhood and that he regretted going to Michigan and leaving his good home.
The Pottawattamie Indians lived in Squawfield about two miles from Linus' home during the last months before the Indians were moved west of the Mississippi. It is said that Chief Baw Beese had a thorne in his foot which was festering and causing him pain. Linus treated it with poltices and won the Chief's lasting gratitude.
In the Hillsdale County History 1879, it says that one day Mrs. Monroe had killed a six foot snake, and that day Chief Baw Beese came to the house. On seeing the snake he said, "Him bite, no cure." The snake was a Michigan rattle snake.
Linus' wife was Lucy M. Hawley (or Holley).

Mary came with her father from Penfield, New York, to Pittsford, Michigan in 1836. In October of that year, she married James H. Thorn.
At the age of eighteen he decided to move from Dutchess County, New York to some western territory. He arrived in Michigan in 1834. He stopped for a while in Detroit. From there he went to Ypsilanti. Later he taught school in Farmington, and then moved west and explored Bean Creek Valley. He decided to settle in Jefferson Township, Hillsdale County. He walked some ninety miles to Monroe, Michigan to enter his location with the land office. After paying his registration fee, he had only ten cents left. undaunted by his lack of funds, his small coin was spent for cheese and crackers.
James was one of the early settlers of Hillsdale County and was very influential in shaping its affairs. His ripe judgement and keen intellectual powers made him a leader among men.
