President Tyler did not want his daughter, Mary, to marry Henry Jones because he was called shiftless. He finally consented to the marriage with the stipulation that Mary's son, William, stay in Halifax and not have to face society giving him a hard time about Henry Jones' mother, who was born out of wedlock.

On a trip to Savannah, Georgia, Letitia and her brother, William, stopped in Halifax, North Carolina to visit relatives. They helped with the tobacco harvest to get extra money for the trip, but when it came time to move on, Letitia said she had met Thomas Fly and had consented to marry him, so she was staying in Halifax.
