Surgeon's mate at Fort Saint George (Madras) 1724, Surgeon at Fort Saint David 1736 (summoned 1737 to Arcot to treat Bakar Ali Khan, Governor of Vellore); surgeon at Ft. St. George 1742-46, 1749-57 (probably at Ft. St. David during French occupation of Madras 1746-9); attended Clive shortly before Clive left India (1753); complained against 1754, reproved by Board, but complimented & asked to remain as HEIC physician 1756; d. 26 October 1757, wife Frances Mary (d. 31 May 1771, aged 53) buried St. Mary's Cemetary, Madras; [?] sons Robert Duncan (1748-93), Hugh John, [George (of Alness & of Richmond, Grenada);] drs. Katherine & Margaret Aurora (m. 1769 cousin George Smith).
