Paisley, 1796; taught in elementary school, educated Glasgow University; tutor to Duke of Argyll; ordained to National Scottiish Church, St. Peter's Square, Manchester, 1832; moderator of Presbyterian Church Synod of England 1841, joined Free Church 1843, his church at Manchester "seized", after much litigation; founded Grosvenor Square Church, Manchester, 1849; D.D. after much litigation, DD New York 1855; moderator of 33rd Synod 1869; d. in office 1 November 1869; buried Ardwick Cemetry; m. 1857 Elizabeth Foster (d. sp 1893). Published "A Catechism on Presbyterian Government and Order (trans Dutch ) Calvinism in ots Relations to Scripture & Reaszon (Glasgow 1856)m and sermons
