Notes:

When Henry was two years old, his parents moved from New York to Michigan. They had a farm 1 1/2 miles southwest of Howell, Michigan. They eventually built a large brick home that was a showplace until 1979 when it was burned by vandals.

In 1870, the family moved to Cassville, Wisconsin, where they lived for several years. They then bought a farm near Mt. Ida., and Henry farmed there.

Henry and Lucy were potent factors in the development and progress of their community. He taught music in Cassville.

Francis was a hardware merchant in Howell, Michigan. He served as village president in 1875.

On 12 Mar 1877, his store burned down so he moved his family to Duluth, Minnesota. He probably died before 1910, because he was not mentioned in his wife's obituary. She was killed in 1910 "by a car."

James enlisted in the Civil War three times. The third time, he joined Company G, of the 5th Michigan Infantry on 10 Apr 1862 in Detroit, Michigan. He was assigned to the Army of the Potomac and fought in the Siege of Yorktown, and the Battle of Williamsburg where he received a bayonet wound above the knee of his left leg. In the Battle of Five Oaks, he had three bullets shot through his clothing. He also fought in the Battle of Peach Orchard, Chantilly and the Battle of Malvern Hill and at Harrison's Landing. At one point, he suffered a heat stroke and was in the hospital for a time. He was discharged on 17 Nov 1862.

He had a well-developed farm of 100 acres in Ingham County.

Norton had a model farm in Livingston County, Michigan. He was not well educated, but he made up the deficiency by broad and general reading. He was an intelligent man and a good conversationalist.

On 14 Aug 1862, he enlisted in Company E, of the 22nd Michigan Infantry. He fought in many battles, and was wounded in the left arm in the Battle of Chickemanqua. He was discharged on 8 Dec 1868.

In 1871, Norton's father retired from farming and left his property in charge of Norton and moved into the village of Howell, Michigan.

«i»NORTON M. MONROE. A goodly number of veterans of the late war that were drawn from Ingham County still survive and offer a bright example to the young men who are coming up to-day of the disinterested loyalty that prompted them to throw all into the balance with the chance of war, for at that time there was no assurance, in fact apparently small chance, of any remuneration for services and it was certain that many would sacrifice their lives. Our subject was (609) one of the most valiant of the regiment that went out from his native State, and that was detailed to duty in the Army of the Cumberland.

The gentleman who now owns the model farm located on section 34, Leroy Township, is a native of Livingston County, this State. He was born September 23,1840, and is a son of Francis and Luana (Hix) Monroe. He is a brother of J. M. Monroe, of whom a sketch appears in another part of this ALBUM. Reared to manhood in his native State during his boyhood life, school duties and farm duties were shared with the balance in favor of the latter, for at that time there was much to be done to put the land in a productive state and labor was not easy to be had. He engaged in farming as soon as he was able and old enough to do the lightest work, and although he is not among the older men of the State he can still recall many pioneer experiences relating to his youthful days.

The writer doubts whether there is any other nation that has such extensive readers as are the Americans, and although Mr. Monroe's education would not be considered at the present time a liberal one he made up the deficiency in this respect by broad and general reading. He is an intelligent man and a good conversationalist. August 14, 1862, our subject enlisted in Company H, Twenty-second Michigan Infantry. He fought in many of the battles of the late war which are already celebrated in history, and as time passes will stand out more prominently in the history of the nation. He was a participant in the battle of Chickamauga and was there wounded in the left arm by a minie ball, after which he was in the hospital for a short time. He was discharged from active service December 8, 1863, after which he returned to Michigan and has since made his home in this State.

After returning from the army Mr. Monroe was married December 28, 1864 to Miss Caroline Simmons, a daughter of Ephraim and Nancy Simmons, of New York State. This worthy couple have been the parents of four children, whose names are as follows: Fred L. married Miss Lora L. Hubbard, and resides on the home farm; Nellie A., Lewis N. and Harry A. The daughter is now the wife of G. W. Stowe. The original of our sketch farms eighty acres of as good land as is in Leroy Township. He is a member of the Methodist Protestant Church and morally his character and standing is without reproach. He is of a progressive tendency and seeks to encourage everything that tends to have a refining and elevating influence, both in this family and in general social relations. Politically, our subject is a Republican and the success of his party is as dear to him is though he were personally interested.

George lived in Howell, Michigan. One reference says George's wife, Sarah died in May 1874 and that her name was Sarah C. Boothby. She was the daughter of N. S. and Martha (Temple) Boothby.

He was a farmer in Ingham County and belonged to the Baptist Church. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 80.

George's second wife was Mary Bird (or Maria) Purchase.

Rosa was the eldest of five children. Her mother died when she was 11 years old. The youngest, Bert, was then a baby. Rosa and her father did their best to care for the family. Even after her father remarried, it was not an easy life for Rosa, but she loved her father and brothers and endured much unhappiness to be near them. Finally she went to live with her aunt Emma, who was the second wife of Richard Whalian. There she met his son, Emmett. They both taught school and had much in common. They fell in love and married.

Rosa went to normal school in Howell for 6-10 weeks and began boarding out while teaching school for various periods of time. In between teaching, she lived with her Uncle Richard and Aunt Emma, where she helped with the family chores including sewing. She developed a life-long love for sewing. She made an elaborate, beautiful high school graduation dress for her daughter, Olive.

Arthur was later adopted by his uncle, James Monroe. He married Mary Converse, a beautiful brunette. She was a Seventh Day Adventist and Arthur's family had a hard time accepting her religion. They had two daughters who were still quite young when Mary died.

Arthur's second wife, Marion was very religious. At this time, Arthur joined the choir at the Baptist church in Fowlerville, Michigan. One night after he left choir practice, he picked up some groceries and drove home. As he was carrying the groceries to the house, he was attacked. He lay unconscious all night and was found by the mover he had hired to help him pack up to move. They had just sold their home for $17,000 and the it is assumed that the assailant thought he had the cash. When the investigators went into the house, they found his wife, Marion, had been murdered in her bed. Many people feel that the murderer was a former employee, a Belgian who had come to the U.S. to work in suger beet fields. He had made advances to Arthur's wife and had been warned about that. The Belgian had been seen in the vicinity the day of the murder.

Later, Arthur married Hazel, a conniving woman who managed to get most of his savings and ended up with a divorce.

Rolla was handicapped, probably by polio. He died of "marasmus" at the age of 14 years. Marasmus means persistent emaciation, most often used in relation to infants. In a 14-year old it could be leukemia, kidney tumor, chronic infectious disease, diabetes, etc. Ref. (1) says he died in Jul 1900.
