Elizabeth Munro

Notes:

Elizabeth was called Betsy. Her mother died giving birth to her while her father was away with the 77th Highland Regiment in the French and Indian War.

She was cared for at first by persons unknown to us and later probably by a member of her father's household in Albany, New York. By 1775 she was an irrepressible girl of seventeen who married Donald Fisher against her father's wishes. Donald had been a soldier in the 77th. She led a colorful life with him. They were married in the First Dutch Reformed Church in Albany, New York.

In his History of Washington County, Asa Fitch says that she consorted with counterfeiters and was indicted for forging her father's name to a deed some years later. References to her in the family correspondence are veiled. She and her sons, Harry and Alexander Fisher, went to Montreal, where she died. She had a daughter also, of whom little is said.

Elizabeth married Donald Fisher on 1 Feb 1776 in Albany, Albany Co., New York, USA. Donald was born about 1757 in Breadalbane, Scotland; died in 1798 in Hebron, Washington Co., New York. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

In 1793, Captain Henry (or Harry) Fisher settled in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.

During the War of 1812, he and two of his sons moved to the Red River Settlement in Manitoba, Canada and became traders for the Hudson Bay Company. He became a successful fur trader in Wisconsin and Manitoba.

He married the daughter of Claude Charles and Madeleine Pashal (Chevalier) Gauthier de Verville.

Alexander entered the service of the Hudson Bay Company and became a successful man. He never married.
