Maj. Andrew Munro

Notes:

Some researchers believe that this is a composite of two people, one Andrew who came to Maryland about 1642 and a second Andrew who was taken prisoner at the battle of Preston in 1648 and banished to Virginia. This belief is based mainly on the fact that the "earlier" Andrew was illiterate and unable to sign his name, but the "later" Andrew was literate. There is no definitive proof one way or the other, since he may have simply become literate.

George H. S. King has argued quite convincingly that there were two distinct men named Andrew Munro/Monroe. (Clan Munro Magazine - #6 - 1959-60) King believed that the earlier Andrew immigrated to Maryland in 1637 and ultimately became the ancestor of President James Monroe. His ancestry is completely unknown. King says that the second Andrew was a minister and was the son of David Munro of Katewell and his wife Agnes Munro, but this Andrew was not the ancestor of President Monroe. There is great controversy about these two versions of history. In this database, we show David of Katewell and Agnes Munro as ancestors of President Monroe, but that assumption is very weak and definitely not proven.

The following is from the "William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine" - Vol. XIII #4 - Oct 1933 - The Monroe Family - p. 231-241:

In the "Life of James Monroe" by his son-in-law, Samuel Lawrence Gouverneur of New York State, it is stated that Andrew Monroe, ancestor of President Monroe, was an officer in King Charles' Army.

The following is quoted in part from Lund Washington (1767-1853), who married Susannah Monroe Grayson, grand-daughter of Captain Benjamin Grayson and Susannah Monroe, his wife, and who was for years on intimate terms with members of the Monroe family: - "Andrew Monroe emigrated from Scotland to America in 1650, he belonged to an ancient highland clan and was Captain in the service of Charles I. He received a grant of land on the borders of Monroe creek (so called after the family) about one mile below Bluff Point and about four miles from Pope's Creek (where Washington was born) on the Potomac in Northumberland County. In the time of Charles II he returned to Scotland and induced others of his family to emigrate and another extensive grant of land in the same quarter was made to him by the corwn."

We quote the following from Mr. James D. Evans, a descendant of the Monroe family, and an ardent student of genealogy: - "The identity and derivation of the immigrant, the 1st Andrew Monroe, has not, I think, been settled by the assumption that he was indubitably the Major Andrew Monroe, 3rd son of David Munro of Scotland who participated in the Battle of Preston and being taken prisoner by the English (1648) was banished to Virginia. The article which appears in the William and Mary Quarterly, written by Mr. Edward S. Lewis of St. Louis, which attempts to substantiate the identity is by no means conclusive. It presents nohting more than an interesting conjecture but no evidence except identity of name. There is very positive proof that Andrew Monroe who appeared in Virginia and Westmoreland County in 1650 and patented lands in 1652 on what later became known as Monroe's Creek, and who can be none other than the first of the Monroes who for generations remained in unbroken line in that vicinity, came there from St. Mary's County, Maryland, and was the same as is traceable in the Maryland Archives back to 1642 in the same place. He appears there to have been assessed 50 lbs. of tobacco in Jul 1642 to support the war against the Susquehanna Indians (Maryland Assembly Proceedings V. 2-30/2 Entry book #53) and again as a freeholder represented in the Assembly by Capt. Thomas Cornwallis on 22 Aug 1642 (Maryland Archives Acts of Assembly V. I-165). On 6 Apr 1648 Andrew Monroe signed with his mark as witness a deed of gift from Burgess Thomas Sturman to his son John Sturman to all his cattle and his shallop 'now in Maryland.' (Lb. 362). On 2 Apr 1648 Andrew Munrowe of Appomattox in Virginia (a point on the Potomac across the river from St. Mary's, Maryland) made a bill of sale for a heifer 2 years old to Thomas Sturman which was witnessed by John Sturman (Lb-383).

"it is likely, if not certain, that Andrew Monroe went to Virginia from Maryland in 1647, with Thomas Youell and Thomas Sturman. These two men originally settled in Kent Isle in the Chesapeake - first claimed by Colonel William Clayburn of the Virginia Council who settled it in 1634 or earlier but was in 1638 dispossessed by Lord Calvert. They made an affidavit to the effect 20 May 1640, when they removed to St. Mary's, the seat of government. Thomas Sturman was successively Burgess from St. Michael's and St. Mary's. In 1645 Thomas Sturman, his son John, and Thomas Youell joined Richard Ingle in a revolt against Leonard Calvert, deputy-governor, and were condemned as rebels, a price put on their heads and their property confiscated. They fled to Virginia across the Potomac. Amnesty was later decreed to such as should sue for pardon and Thomas and John Sturman accepted it and made their oaths of allegiance. Thomas Youell apparently never complied and remained in Virginia where he patented lands and lived the rest of his life. In 1647/8 Thomas Sturman and Andrew Monroe left St. Mary's and settled near Youell in Westmoreland county. John Sturman later also crossed into Virginia where he married Elizabeth, daughter of Patrick and Dorcas Spence, the sister of Eleanor Spence, who married Andrew the 2nd, son of Andrew, the immigrant. Patrick Spence the second married Penelope, daughter of Thomas Youell."

The following is taken from the History and Register of the Colonial Dames of Virginia, page 497, and is basis for Colonial Dame Claim: - "Andrew Monroe of Maryland born in Scotland in _____ and died in Virginia 1668. Resided in Virginia and Maryland 1642-1668. Member of the Maryland Association, 1642. Captain of a ship under Cuthbert Fenwick."

In the preceding paragraphs we have tried to give as much evidence as possible in regard to the identity and derivation of the immigrant Monroe. In brief, it will be noted that there are two schools of thought among most Monroe genealogists - (1) those that think him to be the son of David and Agnes (Munro) Munro of Scotland, fought in the Battle of Preston with rank of Major, 1648, was banished and came to Virginia where he settled; (2) those that think him to be of undetermined derivation, first appearing in St. Mary's county, Maryland, in 1642, and later, about 1647/8, moving across the Potomac River to Westmoreland county, Virginia, where he settled and died.

However, it is the opinion of the writers that these two Andrew Monres are identical; that is, that Andrew Monroe, the third son of David Munro of Katewell and Agnes Munro, his wife, came first to America about 1642 and settled in St. Mary's County, Maryland, where he lived and we find record of him, moving about 1647 to Virginia and living at Appomattox, Westmoreland County, until about Apr 1648, when (as intimated in the quotation from Lund Washington) he returned to Scotland, fought in the Battle of Preston with the rank of Major on 17 Aug 1648, where he was taken prisoner and banished to Virginia - again settling in Westmoreland county where he died in 1668.

Andrew received his first grant of land 8 Jun 1650 in Northumberland County, Virginia, and was later (1652) granted land in Westmoreland County, Virginia. In 1659/1660 he was made a member of the Westmoreland Commission. In Jul 1661 he was elected to the vestry of Appomattox Parish, Westmoreland County. He began to write the name Munroe and it finally attained its present form, Monroe. He married Elizabeth, who is said to have been a daughter of Colonel John Alexander, who died in 1677, but we have found no documentary evidence that would definitely establish her surname. Andrew Monroe died in Westmoreland County in 1668. His widow, Elizabeth Monroe, married second before 30 Jul 1679, George Horner, and third before 23 Feb 1686-1687, Edward Mountjoy of Westmoreland County.

Lund Washington wrote that Andrew Monroe came from the Scottish Highlands and received a land-grant on Monroe Creek, in Northumberland, in 1650. He was Captain in the service of Charles 1st. He returned to Scotland in the time of Charles 2nd and encouraged other of the family to emigrate and received another grant of land from the Crown. Lund Washington knew the descendants of all the people of whom he wrote. After all, his mother-in-law, Susanna Monroe Grayson, was the daughter of Col. Andrew Monroe and the grand-daughter of the original Andrew Monroe.

Andrew learned to write and gradually changed the name from Munroe to Monroe (this, according to George Harrison Sanford King in his article "The Monroe Family"). King states that the Maryland Andrew Monroe and the Virginia Andrew Monroe are one and the same. He references MacKenzie's book as one of his sources. King was regarded as the expert on the Monroes. He did the genealogies for the Jamestowne Society and Order of the First Families of Virginia.

In the article "The Maryland Ancestry of James Monroe" in Maryland Genealogies Vol. II by Monroe Johnson, Johnson quotes Pres. Daniel C. Gilman of Johns Hopkins University and the original biographer of James Monroe, that Andrew came to Maryland in 1637 and settled on Kent Island. He left Maryland after Ingle's revolt and settled in Westmoreland County.

It is believed that Andrew first came to America about 1642 and settled in St. Mary's County, Maryland. In Jul 1642, he was assessed 50 lbs. of tobacco to support the war against the Susquehanna Indians. On 24 Feb 1647 he was defendant in a suit of Mrs. Mary Brent in which he was decreed to pay her 400 lbs. of tobacco. He was a member of the Maryland Association, in 1642, and captain of a ship under Cuthbert Fenwick, general agent for Lord Baltimore, and he was known as a "mariner."

When Richard Ingle declared for the Parliament, Andrew took sides against Lord Baltimore's government, and like Nathaniel Pope, ancestor of President Washington, Dr. Thomas Gerrard and other leading Marylanders, he fled over the Potomac to a settlement under the Virginia authority. He lived at Appomattox, Westmoreland County until about Apr 1648, when he returned to Scotland.

He fought with the rank of Major under his distinguished relative, General Sir George Munro I of Newmore at the battle of Preston on 17 Aug 1648 with the forces of King Charles I. He was taken prisoner there and banished to Virginia. Andrew managed to effect his escape and settled in Northumberland County, Virginia, where he had several grants of land made to him, the first extending to 200 acres, designated as one of the "Head Rights" being dated 8 Jun 1650. He received a grant of land on the borders of Monroe Creek (so called after the family) about one mile below Bluff Point and about four miles from Pope's Creek (where Washington was born) on the Potomac in Northumberland County. In the time of Charles II he returned to Scotland and induced others of his family to emigrate and another extensive grant of land in the same quarter was made to him by the crown.

In 1652, he had settled in Westmoreland County, Virginia. In this same year he signed an oath promising to be faithful to the Commonwealth of England. This implies that he must have been a suspected Loyalist to the Crown, otherwise his oath would not have been required. By 11 Apr 1652, he was serving as Commissioner of the Council of the State for the Common Wealth of England.

In 1659/60 he was made a Member of the Westmoreland Commission. In July 1661 he was elected to the Vestry of Appomattox Parish, Westmoreland County. He began to write the name Munroe and it finally attained its present form, Monroe.

On 26 Oct 1666, he received 920 acres of land in Westmoreland County, Virginia for transporting 6 persons.

Andrew and Elizabeth married in 1652 according to one reference, but another says they were married before 1650. Elizabeth is said to be a daughter of Colonel John Alexander, but this surname has not been proven. After Andrew's death she married, before 30 Jul 1679, (2) George Horner and, before 23 Feb 1686/7, (3) Edward Mountjoy of Westmoreland County.

Error alert: The Cochran reference says that Andrew married Eleanor Spence, but it is believed that Eleanor was the wife of Andrew's son, Andrew.

«i»Andrew Munro immigrated to America in his early teens first settling in Maryland, possibly on Kent Island. In the late 1640's he was listed on the freeman's proxies of Capt. Thomas Cornwalleys, a Catholic. But he eventually was linked to the notorious Ingle's revolt and took refuge across the Potomac in Northumberland County which later became Westmoreland. The Virginia Land Patent Books showed that on 8 Jun 1650, Andrew Monroe received from Sir William Berkeley a patent for 200 acres in Northumberland County. This patent was for the transportation of four persons.

He later was among the ninety-seven settlers who signed the Oath of Allegiance to Cromwell's "Commonwealth of England as established without King or House of Lords, 11 Apr 1652" He then on 24 Nov. 1652 received another patent for 440 acres in Northumberland County for the transportation of nine persons. This patent was renewed on 18 Mar 1662. In 1652, Monroe married Elizabeth, daughter of John Alexander. They had at least five children. In Feb. 1663 he received another patent for 350 acres for the transportation of seven persons and by this time, having over 990 acres of productive land growing tobacco and corn.

By 1661 he was considered one of the leading planters of his parish because on 3 July 1661 he was selected as a member of the vestry of Apomatocks Parish, which later became Washington parish. His exact date of death is unknown but on 28 April 1668, Elizabeth, relict of Andrew Monroe, made a deed of gift to her daughters, Elizabeth an Susanna, of "a pair of heifers marked with the mark of Andrew Monroe....all her children, Elizabeth, Susanna, Andrew, George and William to have a mare foal... when either Elizabeth or Susanna shall be married the the cattle shall be equally divided between them" (recorded 28 Apr 1668, Westmoreland County Records, 1668;23, 23a).

Andrew lived in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He was a Capt. (one reference says Major) in the Scots Army and a Judge or Justice of the Peace. He owned large estates and numerous slaves. In 1705, he made a deed for 3 acres to John Hore, part of a tract patented by his father in 1652.

Andrew was married three times, but only had children by his second wife, Eleanor Spence (or Spens).

His first wife may have been the daughter of Thomas Bowcock, Sr., of Westmoreland County, and Jane Bowcock. She was the sister of Margaret Bowcock, who married her husband's brother, William Monroe. Her mother, Jane Bowcock, married (2) Thomas White after the death of Thomas Bowcock. She had no children.

His second wife, Eleanor, was the daughter of Lt. Patrick Spence (1633-1684) and Dorcas, his wife. Dorcas married (2) John Jordon, who died 1696. Dorcas died in 1708, leaving a will in which she mentions her daughter, Eleanor Monroe and other members of the Monroe family. Eleanor's first husband was James Bowcock.

Andrew's third wife, Sarah Foxhall, was the daughter of John and Martha Foxhall of Pope's Creek, Westmoreland County, Virginia, and the widow of John Elliott. Sarah's granddaughter, Martha Sturman [3725], by her daughter, Sarah Elliott, married Jordon Weedon [3724], the nephew of Andrew, her second husband. (Follow that if you can.)

When Sarah's first husband, John Elliott, died in 1708, she was left with four minor children. She had no issue by her second husband, Andrew Monroe.

Andrew's will is dated 30 Dec 1713 and proved 26 May 1714. The Johnson reference says he died Nov 1735.

Error alert: The Cochran reference says Andrew married Christine Tyler, but it is believed that Christine married another person named Andrew Monroe. The same reference lists Spencer Monroe (who married Elizabeth Jones) as one of Andrew's children. Elizabeth Jones actually married Spence Monroe who was the son of the Andrew Monroe who actually did marry Christian Tyler.

Estimate: This birth date is an estimate based on the birth dates of nearest relatives or contemporaries, or based on other clues such as christening date, marriage date, birth order, etc.

Notes:

Some references say that George was not married. It is not certain that this is the George who was married to Dorothy Cager and lived in St. Mary's County, Maryland. The Charles C. Munroe, III reference says George was the "ancestor of Thomas Monroe who married Jane Watson".

Ref 1 says he died young. Ref 2 says he was born about 1654 probably in Westmoreland County, Virginia, that he died young and questions his marriage to Dorothy Cager. There is obviously some confusion here.

William's will, dated 1737, was found in Westmoreland County, Virginia Wills 1654-1800 - p. 102. It mentions four sons, three daughters and several grandchildren.

The following abtract appears in the Westmoreland Order Book:

"Pursuant to order of Sept. 1738: John Elliott and Richard Watts settled the estate of Spence Monroe, dec'd. The estate was divided between (1) the relict, who had married Richard Fry; (2) James Bankhead; and (3) a minor daughter, Sarah Monroe. The land was on Monroe's Creek."

In his will, dated 15 Jan 1726 and probated 30 Mar 1726, he left his sword and all his wearing clothes to his brother Andrew, and mentions two small children and one unborn child.

One reference gives his name as Spens and confuses him with Spence [1628], the father of President James Monroe.

His wife was Christian Tyler. She married (1) Spence Monroe [3545], then (2) Andrew Monroe [291] (the first cousin of Spence), then (3) Richard Fry.

She was the sister of Joseph Tyler of Westmoreland County who died 1737 leaving a will in which he mentions as "cousins" (meaning nephews and nieces) several of the children of Christian Monroe.

Ref 3 says Spence was born in 1697.

The Charles C. Munroe reference says that Spence died without issue and says that his wife, Christian Tyler was actually Sp[ence's mother.

Susannah (or Susanna or Susan) was married three times and had issue by (2) Charles Tyler, and (3) Captain (or Colonel) Benjamin Grayson. The Holt reference says she was the aunt of President James Monroe, but she was probably his first cousin twice removed.

Error alert: The Boggs reference says that Susannah first married William Linton and second Charles Tyler, but the dates of her children indicate that she was first married to Charles Tyler and second to William Linton. Also, the Bolton reference says Susannah was the daughter of Andrew Monroe and Elizabeth Alexander.

From her father, Susannah inherited: one negro boy, 2 cows, 2 steers, household furniture and 10,000 pounds of tobacco.

One reference gives Susannah's birth year as 1704. The Williams reference gives the name of Susannah's first husband as William Luiton.

According to the Westmoreland records, he bacame of age in 1718.

Colonel or "Black" Andrew Monroe was a merchant, a Justice and Member of the House of Burgesses. He died in Westmoreland County in 1770 leaving a will dated 11 May 1769 and proved 27 Mar 1770 in which he names his grandchildren.

The executors of his will were Dr. James Bankhead, John Ashton and Spence Monroe.

The Charles C. Munroe reference says Andrew was the son of Andrew and Christina Monroe.

The Gerald Monroe reference says Andrew was the son of William Gent Monroe and Margaret Bowcock.

William was married twice and had children by both wives. There is some controversy about which wife bore which children. The name "Gent" may just mean "gentleman" and could have been added as part of his name in error.

He served as Colonel of Westmoreland County, Virginia, Justice of the Peace and Member of the House of Burgesses

He served as executor of his father's will.

John Piper, the father of his first wife, Rachel, left a will, 25 Sep 1759, in which he gives land and five negros to William and his wife. Rachel was the sister of Col. John and Frank Triplet of King George County, Virginia.

One reference gives William's birthdate as 1692 and gives the deathdate of Rachel Piper, his second wife, as 1759 (Williams says she died in 1775). Guilford and ref 1 says William died in 1760. Petersen says William died in 1773.

Andrew inherited from his uncle, Andrew: 1 horse, 1 feather bed and furniture.

He married Christian (or Christiana) Tyler, the widow of his first cousin, Spence Munro. In 1731, he was appointed sheriff of Westmoreland County.

One reference gives Andrew's death date as 1733. He died intestate, and his widow obtained an order for administration on his estate on 25 Nov 1735. The Boyer reference says he was born in 1700.

The Gerald Monroe reference says he married Jane Watts, but other references say Jane was the wife of Col. Andrew Monroe (1697-1770).

Spence inherited and resided at "Belle Air," the former residence of his father in Prince William County, about two miles from the Occoquan river. Later in his life he went to England and studied theology. He was ordained by the Bishop of London, 24 May 1771. He then returned to Virginia in 1771 and preached for a long time at Cameron Parish in Loudoun County, Virginia.

He was a chaplain with the rank of captain in Colonel William Grayson's Virginia Regiment in the American Revolution and was a fighting as well as praying parson. He was Chaplain of Grayson's Additional Continental Regiment in May 1777. He retired 22 Apr 1779.

Spence Grayson was known as a refined gentleman and was devoted to his family and to his friends. He was a large handsome man of distinguished being and manner and an eloquent speaker. He and his family were prominent in the affairs of Virginia and were frequent guests of President George Washington. He was a personal friend of the President. When George Washington's nephew, Major George Augustine Washington was married, there were three clergymen present. The General chose Rev. Grayson to perform the ceremony and gave him $100.

"Belle Air," his home, was situated in the southeast corner of Prince William County, Virginia. The broad Potomac flowed in front about a mile distant south. The view of the Potomac was particularly fine pointing as it did up and down many miles and including Indian Head directly opposite on the Maryland shore. Indian Head was where the Americans opened fire on the British squadron under Com. Gordon on its decent down the river in 1814 after plundering Alexandria.

The plantation consisted of 1000 acres of fine rolling and well-watered land. In nearly the center of the plantation there rose a beautiful tableland, elliptical in shape, large enough for the dwelling, the out-houses, shade trees, walks, gardens, and lawns, and it was exclusively used for that purpose.

Spence was ordained by the Lord Bishop of London on 29 May 1771. The births of some of his children in England was estimated by the time he was in college there. Some of them may have been born in Loudoun County where he preached after returning from England. He was a justice in Prince William county in 1769, so his daughter, Susan Monroe may have been born before he went to England.

Some references say William was born in Spottsylvania County, Virginia and died in Albemarle County, Virginia. Ref 4 suggests that he might have died 7 Dec 1790 in Frederick County, Virginia.

He was buried in the family vault at their Belle Air estate.

Colonel William Monroe Grayson was an attorney and was one of the first two senators from Virginia. His middle name is not certain.

William's children received large tracts of land as a result of his service as a Colonel during the American Revolutionary War, when he served as aide-de-camp of George Washington. The Grayson grant was on the Little Sandy River at the site of Grayson, Kentucky (then in Greenup County, later in Carter County.)

The Williams reference and ref 3 say that Susan married Lund Washington and had Lund, Susan Jean, and Peater Grayson Washington. Other references say it was Susannah Monroe Grayson [19599], who married Lund Washington and had these children. Lund Washington, b. 1767, is much closer in age to Susannah [19599], b. 1767, than to this Susan, b. 1743. The Williams reference is probably in error.

Ref 1 says Susan was born in 1738. Ref 2 says she may have been born in England.

Susan married John Orr in 1761 in Leedstown, Westmoreland Co., Virginia, USA. John was born in 1726 in , , , Scotland; was christened in in Of, Leedstown, Westmoreland Co., Virginia; died in 1791 in Bull Run River. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

On 20 Feb 1794, John sold a tract of land on the Rocky Branch of the Nottoway River which appears to be the same tract of land purchased by William Monroe 32 years before. This is the only evidence linking John as a possible son of William.

The Gerald Monroe reference says that John was the son of Andrew Monroe and Jane Watts.

John first appears in the records of Mecklenburg County, Virginia in 1784 when he received a land grant of 444 acres of land on the south side of the Roanoke River. He sold half of the land on 8 Jan 1787.

On 16 Feb 1808, John sold the other half of his property because he apparently planned to move to another state. He died before he completed his move. His estate was valued at 668 pounds 3 shillings and 6 pence.

Error alert: There is a lot of confusion surrounding this person. It is possible that this is actually the record of two different men named John Monroe. Some researchers say he was the son of William Munro and Mary Smith. There are two children listed in this family named John who are alive at the same time which is almost certainly an error.

Andrew moved to Kentucky in 1792, but the Johnson reference says he married Anna Bell in Kentucky. Other references give the marriage date as 1789. Johnson also believes that Andrew's birth and death places should be reversed as he probably was born in Virginia and died in Kentucky, which seems logical. In any case, Andrew and his family were living in Scott county, Kentucky as early as 1794.

His wife was the daughter of Thomas Bell who moved to Woodford County, Kentucky and became District Judge for Kentucky. Her first name may be Annie or Ann or Anne.

There is much confusion and probably a lot of error in this family record. There is another Andrew Monroe [3556] married to another Ann Bell [3557] in a completely different family line. Is this an error or just an interesting coincidence? Care must be taken here because of the many similar names at about the same time and place.

In 1820, John applied for a pension for his Revolutionary War service. In his declaration at the time he stated that he served as a private. Other papers contain records of a Corporal John Monroe and a Sergeant John Munroe, so there must have been several people of the same name at that time. His declaration reads:

"District of Kentucky, October 9, 1820 on this day personally apeared John Monroe in the county court of Cumberland County, Kentucky, (the said court being a court of record, created by statutes of Kentucky and proceedings according to the rules of the common law) which said Monroe is aged about 75 years and a residenter in the county of Cumberland, and within the jurisdiction of the courts aforesaid. Who being first duly sworn according to the law doth upon his said oath in the court aforesaid oath declaire that he was a soldier in the Revolutionary War of the United States, that he enlisted in the fifth Virginia Regiment in the Continental Establishment in Captain Richard Barnets Company for the term of two years and that he served in the said regiment and ompnay the whole term of his enlistment in the said continental service of the United States of America and that he enlisted in the said regiment and company 6th Feb. 1776. That upon the expiration of the aforesaid term of his enlistment which term he served faithfully, he again enlisted in the same regiment under Captain Harry Fonteroy for the term of 3 years and served the whole term of his said second enlistment faithfully. He states further on oath that he has drawn from the United States under the pension law of Congress of the 18th of March 1818 and upon pension Certificate #15343 the sum of $166.25 and that he makes the foregoing and subsequent declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the acts of Congress of the 18th of March 1818 and the first of May 1820 I do solemly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th da of March one thousand eight hundred and eighteen and that I have not since that time by gift sale or in any manner disposed of my property of any part thereof, with intent thereby so to deminish it as to bring myself within the provisions of an act of Congress entitled "An Act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and Naval service of the United States in the Rev. War passed the 18th day of March 1818, and that I have not nor has any person for me, any property, securities contracts or debts due me. This declaration further states on oath, that by occupation he is a planter, or daily laborer, and that he is weak sickly and much emaciated, so that he is very illy able to work, he states that the number of his family is six persons to wit, an aged wife, three daughters and two sons. The name of his wife Rachel, His eldest daughter is named Fanny aged about 30, his second daughter is named Mary aged 23 years, and his third daughter is named Betsey aged 18 years, his eldest son is Andrew about 21 and his other son named John about 16 years old. He states farther upon oath that excepting his necessary wearing apparel, he has no other property, and therefore a schedule would be unnessary this however he subscribes as the only report and statement which he can make thereon. Sworn to and declared in open court on the ninth day of October 1820."

This declaration was signed on 14 Oct 1820 in the town of Burkesville, Kentucky.

Other records show that John enlisted on 5 Feb 1776 in Captain Henry Fauntleroy's Company of the 5th Virginia Regiment. He signed for two years at $6.75 per month. He was wounded in action on 4 Oct 1777.

In 1799, John and Rachel were living in Amherst County, Virginia. They lived there until about 1803. He was a cousin of President James Monroe.

John received a grant of land in Tennessee, but in traveling over the mountains in unsetteled territory to claim it, he got lost and ended up in Kentucky. He liked Kentucky so well that he never attempted to locate his grant in Tennessee. He lived in different places in Kentucky, but spent his latter years in Cumberland County.

On 14 Dec 1839, John's widow made application before the Justice of Peace in Cumberland County, Kentucky for widow's pension. The application states that John had died on 22 Mar 1835, that they had married 8 Apr 1784 at Roundhill Church in Westmoreland County, Virginia, and that John had been receiving $8 per month since 1818. She stated that by reason of age (80), and bodily infirmity that she was unable to attend at the court house of Cumberland County, twelve or thirteen miles away. Rachel (maiden name unknown) signed the declaration by making her mark. Another document says that Rachel received $80 per year beginning on 4 Mar 1843.

In about 1937, some markers were unveiled at the Old Mulkey Meeting House State Park in Monroe County, Kentucky in memory of some Revolutionary War Soldiers. One of them was John Monroe. His great granddaughter, Miss Effa White, spoke at the ceremony.

In 1752, in Albemarle County, Virginia, he was the administrator of the will of his father-in-law, Arthur Osborn.

He was from Rutherford County, North Carolina and owned land in North Carolina and Kentucky. He lived in Mercer, Franklin and Shelby Counties, Kentucky.

He may have been a soldier in the Revolutionary War and possibly fought at the Battle of Kings Mountain in North Carolina.

George's will dated 24 Aug 1784 (codicil dated 24 Mar 1789) names his wife, Ann Osborn; children Margaret, Isabelle Barnett, Jannett Jones, Arter Monroe, Ann Wilson, William Phillip, Osborn, Mary, and John Monroe. The codicil names his granddaughter, Ann, William's daughter. It was proved in Jul 1789 and probated in Rutherford County, North Carolina and witnessed by Thomas Stockton, John Price, David Mowlin and David Stockton.

Ann's estate was divided among 7 legatees, which means she may have been George's second wife. His first wife may have been named Sanders.

The Price and Ellis references say that George is the same person as George [2815]. The Garrigues reference says that George was the son of Capt. Andrew Munroe [201] and a wife to whom he was married before he married Christian Tyler. The Beggs reference says George is the same person as George [3457]. There is obviously a lot of confusion in this area and the correct version is not known to me.

Captain (or Colonel) Spence Monroe resided on Monroe Creek, Westmoreland County, Virginia, having moved there by 1752. He was the father of President James Monroe. He was a signer of the Westmoreland County resolutions protesting against the Stamp Act.

His son, President James Monroe, said that his father, Spence Monroe, was "a worthy and respectable citizen possessed of good landed and other property."

Ref (1) says Spence was the son of Andrew [3544].

A plausable theory espoused by Virginia R. Redden in ref 2 says that Spence may have been the posthumous son of Spence Monroe, the first husband of Christian Tyler. The will of Christian Tyler's first husband, Spence, mentions two small children and one unborn child. Most historians believe that the "unborn child" died young, but Redden believes that the child may have been born after Christian's marriage to Andrew Monroe and that the child was named Spence after his deceased biological father.

Spence left a will dated 1774, but there is no date of probate.

Ref (3) calls him Andrew Spence Monroe.

Several references say Andrew ("Big Andrew") Monroe never married. Other references, including Williams, confuse Andrew with Andrew [3544].

At a court held for Westmoreland County, Virginia on 27 Feb 1723, Andrew chose his brother, Spence, to be his guardian, which was allowed by the court. In 1774, Andrew served as the executor of Spence's will.

Thomas' will was dated 9 Mar 1772 (one reference says the will was dated 1778). It mentions his brothers Andrew and James. His sister, Martha, was left one bay mare and eight pounds to pay for a saddle. His sister Jane was left 40 shillings. The will was witnessed by his mother, Rachel Piper (step mother?). His estate was divided in 1778.

Error alert: Some references, including Guilford, have Catherine Hore married to Thomas [4652], or have Thomas listed as a son of William Monroe and Rachel Piper.

Guilford and ref 1 say they were married in Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, Virginia.

The William Monroe refererence says that Thomas was the son of John Monroe Jr. who died 1785 in Fairfax County, Virginia. The Monroe Johnson reference says Thomas was the son of William Monroe and Margaret Triplett, while most references say William and Margaret were Thomas' grandparents.

He lived in Truro Parish, Virginia and was one of the early settlers of Oakton, Virginia and was a neighbor of General John C. Hunter. He had other children who were minors when his will was recorded on 28 Jul 1785. He left everything to his widow except his house and land which were bequeathed to his son, William.

In 1786 there is record of payment to one Andrew Monroe from the estate of John Monroe, Gent.

The Watson Monroe reference says John's father was "Andrew (1708 ?- ?)".

John's will was dated 28 Jul 1785.

Some references say he died in Westmoreland County, Virginia.
