Armistead served in the US Air Force for 4 years and was stationed in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After his discharge in Dec 1954 he moved his family to Starkeville, Mississippi where he finished college.
After graduation in 1957, Armistead moved the family to Minnesota where he got a job. He was transferred to Florida in 1971.
