    James entered the army and attained the rank of Major in the 60th Rifles. In 1857, he sold out and was appointed Consul-General at Montevideo, Uruguay where he spent the last twenty years of his life and was much respected by all his acquaintances.

    Before leaving for Montevideo, he disposed of his right of succession to the family estates to his brother, Stuart Caradoc.

    In addition to the Teaninich estate, Stuart owned and took active personal interest in managing extensive estates in Ceylon.
