«i»Beth Monroe, 91, of Rogers City died January 6, 2004 as the result of an accident.
She was born July 1, 1912 in Millersburg to N. C. Monroe, M.D. and Bess Whiteley Monroe. Her father was one of the pioneer physicians in the area and her mother's family established newspapers in Millersburg and several surrounding communities. She joined older brother and sister, Donald and Margot, and later brother Robert completed the family. The family lived in Millersburg until 1917 when they moved to Rogers City.
Other than a short time spent at Michigan Agricultural College (now MSU), Beth spent the remainder of her life in Rogers City. For many years Beth wrote for the Presque Isle County Advance, which was owned and operated by her uncle, Hal Whiteley, and later by her cousin, Harry Whiteley. After the Rogers City Hospital opened, Beth worked at a variety of jobs there, including receptionist and medical transcriber.
Beth's family helped establish what is now Westminster Presbyterian Church and for many years Beth taught the youngest children's primary Sunday school class. She was active with the Presque Isle County Historical Museum, volunteering as a docent. Because Beth knew and grew up with the people who had lived in the museum building, she was an especially treasured guide. She was able to share many personal stories with visitors as they walked together through the house.
Beth was known throught the community because she walked everywhere. She never had a driver's license. At the age of 91 she continued to live in her upstairs apartment, walking to the grocery store and carrying her own purchases upstairs on her return.
Beth's parents and her siblings, Donald M. Monroe, Margot Monroe Vogelheim, and Robert W. Monroe all preceded her in death. She is survived by nieces and nephews, Karl L. Vogelheim, Neil R. Vogelheim, John C. Vogelheim, Mary (Susie) Vogelheim Robinson, Malcolm L. (Mac) Monroe, Lou Monroe Ritter, Carol Beth Monroe Oakley, and Neil T. Monroe.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Humane Society, the Westminster Presbyterian Church, the Presque Isle County Historical Museum, or any local charity.
A memorial service is scheduled Saturday, July 10 at 10 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rogers City.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Beck Funeral Home.

«i»I am writing to share with you the sad news of the death of my aunt, Beth Monroe, of Rogers City, MI. She has been a member of Clan Munro Assoc USA almost since its beginning. She and my mother went to Scotland in 1971 to an International Clan gathering at the coming of age party of Chief Hector Munro. it was a highlight in her long life. She died Jan 6 at the age of 91 of injuries after being hit by a car while walking in her hometown - as she always did. She never drove a car.
