2. | George William Holmes Ross, Of Culcairn (1.Hugh1) was born est 1816 in Of, Cromarty; died on 19 Nov 1883 in Cromarty House. Notes:
On 21 Apr 1846, George entered the army as an Ensign in the 92nd Highlanders. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 23 Jun 1848 and retired in 1851. On 3 Nov 1854, he was gazetted Captain in the Highland Rifle Militia Regiment of Ross and Cromarty, Sutherland and Caithness, later known as the 3rd Battalion Seaforth Highlanders. He was promoted to Major on 26 Nov 1855 and to Lieutenant Colonel (with the honorary rank of Colonel) on 19 Jan 1856. After the death of Colonel the Hon. James Sinclair, he was appointed Colonel-Commandant of the regiment on 11 Feb 1856.
Colonel Ross, who always held the opinion that the Highland dress would best suit the regiment, applied to the Secretary of State to get it so equipped. His request was granted in a letter dated 28 Nov 1860. On his suggestion, the Secretary of State also introduced a new system of preliminary drill for recruits and authorised officers of the Militia, on appointment, to be instructed for one month at the headquarters of their corps. This did away with the necessity of calling out the regiment for training in separate divisions.
George served as Convener of the county of Cromarty, a D.L. and J.P.
