  2. 3.  Alexander MunroAlexander Munro Descendancy chart to this point (1.Margaret1) was born on 5 May 1814 in Rogers Hill, Pictou Co., Nova Scotia, Canada; died on 9 Oct 1887 in Scotsburn, Pictou Co., Nova Scotia, Canada; was buried in Bethel Cem., Scotsburn, Pictou Co., Nova Scotia.

    Notes:

On the wooded and hilly land west of Rogers Hill (later renamed Scotsburn), Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Alexander was born in the small frame house that had been built by his father, Andrew. He inherited this same land and house from his father. Alexander added a portion onto the north of the home that doubled it in size. Here was where he lived, played, brought his wife, Wilhelmina Murry to reside, and where they raised their children. The land was by the old road that ran over the hills from the Manse at Bethel Church and came out on the new road by the garage at Forman McCaras. Later the original home was torn down and another one built on the same foundation.

Family lore declares that when Alexander and Welhelmina wanted to be married that there was an altercation over which family would serve the "grog" at the wedding. The Murray's kept Wilhelmina hidden from her suitor until the "grog incident" could be resolved. Supposedly they had her sleeping in their bedroom in a trundle bed so they could keep a watchful eye upon her. As the story is told, Alexander had a friend go to the Murray home and help her depart without the parents knowledge.

Alexander and Wilhelmina were married in 1836 in Scotsburn. Wilhelmina Murray was probably in some way related to Margaret Murray, Alexander's mother. They had thirteen children, all born in Scotsburn. Six of them moved to Nebraska and Colorado. Five of the children are not accounted for.

The eight day Geddes clock that had been purchased by Andrew and willed to his wife, Margaret, was in the family home when Alexander died on 9 Oct 1887. According to a family story, Lillie Smart Hancock was scrubbing the floor in the family when a member of the family came down the stairs to tell her that "Old Alexander has died". At that moment, the Geddes clock stopped.

Ref (2) says Alexander was born in 1815, but a photo of his tombstone in ref (1) says 5 May 1814.

    Notes:

Isabelle (or Isabella) "Belle" Munro was born in Scotsburn, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada. She lived on the family farm near the village of Scotsburn, in the home that had first been built by her grandfather, Andrew Munro. Her father increased the size of the house to give room for their thirteen children.

The family spoke both Gaelic and ENglish and they attended Bethel Presbyterian Church, just west of Scotsburn.

In 1869, Isabelle moved to Nebraska with her sister, Ann, and brothers, James and John, and possibly others of the family. Margaret and Adam also moved to the U.S. possibly later. The 1870 census says she was living in Schuyler, Colfax County, Nebraska at that time.

Isabella (or Isabelle) "Belle" lived in Nebraska and Canada. In 1870, she was living in Schuyler, Colfax County, Nebraska.

Belle and Robert Smith were married in Schuyler on 20 May 1873 by Alexander Sutherland, a Presbyterian minister. Robert had also moved from Nova Scotia to Nebraska.

In about 1875, Robert and Isabelle moved with their infant son to Red Buttes, Wyoming, a small railroad town south of Laramie. After adding a daughter to the family in Wyoming, they moved back to Schuyler, Nebraska, where Robert took up farming. Four other children were born in Schuyler.

Early in 1893, the family moved to Olds, Alberta, Canada along with many other families from Schuyler. Ther traveled to Olds on special immigrant railroad cars. The trip took a week and meals were cooked on a little potbellied stove at the end of the car.

Dr. Kay was the first Doctor in the community of Olds and he often asked Isabelle to accompany him to the home of a sick patient to assist him.

Isabelle earned money by boarding the school teacher for twelve dollars a month. In 1897, there was a mining boom in Olds and Isabelle obtained a contract to fill wooden tubs with fresh butter. These tubs were shipped to the mining camps. She was paid fifteen cents a pound for the butter.

In the early 1900's, the family moved to British Columbia and lived near Langley Prairie (later named Langley). First they were members of the Cloverdale Presbyterian Church, and then transferred their membership to the nearby church in Murrayville. Belle was an active member of the Sharon Presbyterian Church until her death.

Isabelle died in 1938 and was buried in Murrayville cemetery along with several other members of her family including her husband, daughter Grace, and sons Daniel and Albert.

  2. 16.  Mina Jane SmithMina Jane Smith Descendancy chart to this point (12.Isabelle3, 3.Alexander2, 1.Margaret1) was born on 31 Dec 1876 in Red Buttes, Wyoming Territor; died on 28 Jan 1950 in Inman, Holt Co., Nebraska; was buried in Inman Cem., Inman, Holt Co., Nebraska.

    Notes:

Mina Jane was born in 1876 in the small railroad town of Red Buttes in the Wyoming Territory. Her parents had moved there from Nebraska, apparently because her father had a job with the railroad.

The family had returned to Schuyler, Nebraska by the time their next child was born in 1880. Mina attended school in the Schuyler area, probably a country school near the small town of Rogers, Nebraska. The family homesteaded a farm two miles east of the town of Olds. Mina had a job in town.

When she was seventeen, the family moved to Olds, Alberta, Canada. By this time, she had attracted the attention of George Coventry, who also lived in the Schuyler area and also moved to Olds, Canada. George was the son of James and Louisa Caroline (Day) Coventry. George and Mina married in 1896 at her parents home in Olds. They were married by the Rev. Peter Naismith.

The couple lived near Olds until 1904 when they decided to return to Nebraska. By then they were the parents of three children. They settled in the cranch country five miles south of Inman, Nebraska where George's father had purchased land. They made their home with him.

Mina's days were busy ones with a large family to care for and all of the duties that a wife needed to accomplish without all of the conveniences that became the norm in later decades. She grew many beautiful flowers, especially moss rose and geraniums. One of her hobbies was making hooked rugs and chair seats. She was also gifted in the art of knitting. Each grandchild was supplied with warm, wool mittens for the cold Nebraska weather. Her seventeen grandchildren were always welcome to have tea at Grandma Coventry's and it was usually accompanied by her delicious sugar cookies, angel food cake, or a piece of luscious pie.

Her afternoon womens clubs were an important part of her life and she received her twenty five year Jewel for active membership in the Rebekah Lodge.

She hosted many Sunday dinners for all of the family in Inman. On 2 Dec 1938 she was doing this usual task and it was not until all were getting ready to leave for their respective homes did she tell them that she had word that morning that her mother, Isabelle Smith, had passed away in British Columbia, Canada. this was typical of her, she did not want to spoil their day.

Mina died in 1950 at her home after a two-week illness. Her family was with her. Funeral services were conducted from the home by the Rev. Roy W. Wingate. The Arbutus Rebeckah Lodge #317 conducted memborial rites, and she was buryid in the Inman cemetery near the grave of her husband, George.

George owned a forty-acre farm which he worked with his two sons. He bottled and delivered milk and also ran an insurance company.
