"John of Urquhart d Oct 1597, will mentions brother Farquhar; sons Robert and John have not been satisfactorily identified, as former can hardly be min of Abertarff who 'married' Simon Fraser and dowager Lady Lovat 1697..."

Robert studied for the ministry, and after passing his secondary trials before the Presbytery of Abertarff, and on 23 Feb 1676, he was recommended by that body for ordination. His ordination took place on 2 Mar and he was admitted to Abertarff on 12 Mar.

Robert is best known as the minister who married Simon Fraser and Lady Amelia Murray, daughter of the Marquis of Atholl, then Dowager Lady Lovat. The marriage was performed "under the most brutal and repulsive circumstances," and Simon was subsequently sentenced to death and his estates forfeited, for Lady Amelia had been forced into the marriage.

Robert died without children and probably unmarried, a few weeks after performing the forced marriage, but nearly a year later, he was named, among others, for his part in the outrage upon the Dowager Lady Lovat. None of the defendants appeared in court, but they all were put to the horn, their moveable goods and gear forfeited and were declared outlaws and fugitives from the law.

Robert served as Commissary of Caithness.

In about 1620, George, Earl of Caithness, caused all the standing corn in Sanset to be burned. As a punishment for this malicious mischief, he was requested to resign a portion of the feu-lands of the Bishopric of Sutherland and Caithness to the Bishop of the diocese.

At first he agreed, but later changed his mind tried to get out the punishment. Robert Munro of Aldie, who was the Bishop's factor, was determined to enforce the punishment, but to appease the Earl, he allowed him to retain a part of the lands then occupied by Sir James Sinclair of Durran as the Earl's tenant. But later, Robert obtained a lease of the same lands for Thomas Lindsay, Robert's half-brother.

Sir James Sinclair of Durran was very annoyed at having been deprived of his lands in this way, and upon meeting Thomas Lindsay one day, they quarrelled and fought. Lindsay was mortally wounded in the fight and died a few days later.

After consulting with Sir Robert Gordon, Robert Munro decided to prosecute Sinclair as actor and the Earl of Caithness as instigator of the murder of his half-brother, Thomas Lindsay.

When Sinclair heard of Munro's determination to bring him to justice, he fled to Edinburgh. Robert Munro pursued him, and when he arrived in the capital, he caused Sinclair and the Earl of Caithness to be summoned to appear before the court for the murder of his step-brother. Neither defendant appeared on the appointed day and both were outlawed and denounced as rebels.

Sinclair escaped to London to his kinsman, Sir Andrew Sinclair of Mey. He persuaded Sir Andrew to intercede with King James and ask for a pardon. The King refused the pardon, whereupon Sinclair fled to Denmark to avoid any punishment.

When Robert Munro heard that Sinclair had gone to London, Robert followed. There, in the name of the Bishop of Caithness, he complained to the King relating the oppression and evil deed of Lord Caithness. Robert pointed out that his half-brother had been slain by the Earl's direction, and that he, himself, had narrowly escaped the fury of the Earl, who was outlawed for the murder.

The King wrote to the Scottish Privy Council instructing them to take immediate and vigorous steps to suppress the Earl's oppression and ordered them to give a Commission to Sir Robert Gordon to go into Caithness and apprehend Earl George, or make him leave the country, and to take possession of his houses for his Majesty's use.

Sir Robert very reluctantly accepted the commission, but delayed executing his orders. The Earl of Caithness took advantage of this delay and wrote to the Privy Council maintaining that he was innocent of the murder of Thomas Lindsay, and that the reason he did not obey the summons was because of his great debts. He was afraid to show up in Edinburgh because he creditors would apprehend him and throw him into prison.

On the receipt of the Earl's letter, the council instructed Sir Robert to delay carrying out their order to apprehend the Earl until further investigations could be made. It was eventually found that the Earl was indeed guilty of murder and Sir Robert was told to go ahead and execute his commission.

Sir Robert proceeded to Caithness and in his Majesty's name, took possession of his Lordship's principal castles and strongholds. The Earl quickly fled to Orkney, intending to cross into Norway on his way to Denmark, but he returned to Caithness, where he died in Feb 1643, at the age of 78 years, in comparative obscurity.

Robert Munro died before 6 Nov 1633.

The Andrews reference has confused this Robert Munro with Robert Munro XVIII of Foulis.

Error alert: Some researchers say Robert was the father of William Munroe of Lexington (b. 1625). Others say Robert Munro of Aldie who married Elizabeth Johnson was William's father.

On 5 Jun 1644, Hugh received from Sir Robert Innes of that Ilk, a charter of confirmation of the lands of Teaninich alienated to him by his father in 1624.

On 22 Dec 1649, he received at Elgin, a loan from James Farquhar, merchant of Aberdeen, in the amount of 5780 merks Scots. He was to repay the loan at the rate of 100 bolls per year with interest of 8%, delivering the goods free of charge to Alness beach between 1 Apr and 31 May each year. In security, Hugh put up all of his lands within the parish of Alness.

Hugh made the annual payments until the debt was reduced to 3756 pounds when James Farquhar insisted upon being paid the full amount. Since Hugh couldn't come up with the money, James pressured him to sell Teaninich. Hugh finally did sell his estate to his cousin, Hugh Munro of Tearivan.

  14. 49.  Hugh Munro, of TeaninichHugh Munro, of Teaninich Descendancy chart to this point (19.Andrew3, 3.Hugh2, 1.John1) was born about 1604; died in Dec 1703.

    Notes:

Hugh of Tearivan succeeded his cousin as Laird of Teaninich. He appears to have been a man of much prudence and considerable means, and he added largely to the family possessions.

On 7 Jun 1650 at Chanonry, he sold some goods to James Farquhar, a merchant from Aberdeen.

On 20 Nov 1655, Hugh purchased the lands of Teaninich from his cousin, Hugh, who had gotten into debt and had to sell the estate. On 20 Feb 1660, he added the lands of Milton of Alness by purchasing them from Robert Gray of Arboll for just over 500 pounds. He also purchased other lands in the neighborhood from Farquhar Munro of Teanoird and others.

He did not conform to Episcopacy at first and he was one of the 47 persons in the Northern Counties who were fined for refusing to do so. He paid about 1200 pounds Scots to John Paterson, Bishop of Ross in Feb 1665, but by the end of the year he had taken the oath of allegiance. He soon returned to the Presbyterian fold, however, and became an active elder in the Parish Church of Alness.

According to the valuation roll of 1644, the total rents collected on Hugh's lands was about 440 pounds.

Hugh served as Collector of Customs of Inverness-shire and Commissioner for Supply for Ross in 1667 and 1685.

He lived to a very old age. On 7 Feb 1701, he signed a discharge at Milton of Alness which was witnessed by "Hugh Munro, Younger of Teaninich, my grandchild."

Robert Munro of Aldie was Commissary of Caithness. He may have served or accompanied Colonel Robert Munro of Foulis to the wars in Germany. He may have been Colonel Robert's regant at Nuremberg with Gustavus Adolphus' army in 1632.

    **********
«i»Aldie was one of the estates in Easter Ross. Like most estates the land was not in one parcel but in several bits as property was increased through purchase or marriage. Aldie was not one of the largest estates but it was quite an important one. The only information I have come across about a Munro of Aldie was that in 1628 a John Ross, merchant in Tain, bought Aldie from a Robert Munro but exactly who he was and when or how he acquired the land I don't know. From that point on descendents of John Ross owned the farm for almost 200 years. Then it was owned by other families but never again by a Munro. It eventually gradually got sold off a split up so does not exist as an estate any more.

As well as the estate and a farm of that name, there was an Aldie Burn which later becomes Tain River before flowing into the Dornoch Firth. Tain is situated on a raised beach beside the mouth of this small river. A series of mills were powered with the water from this burn the two main groups being High Mills and Aldie Mills.«/i»
