General Jacques Monroe commanded the 69th Infantry Division of France and participated in the battle of Berry au Bac near Reims on 16 Apr 1917. Within his area of command, armoured tanks were employed for the first time. The 501st Regiment de Char de Combat (Tank Regiment) points to that battle as the origin of the unit.
