    Francis served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. On 16 Dec 1862, he enlisted for three years at Bruce Township, Macomb County, Michigan. He was assigned to Company E, 8th Cavalry as a Corporal. He was wounded in the fighting and never fully recovered. He was mustered out of the service on 26 Jul 1863 and transferred to the Invalid corps on 15 Jun 1864. He eventually died of his wounds in 1890.

    Lydia/Aleda was listed as age 14 in 1850 census giving her a birth date of about 1836. Her death certificate says she was born 5 May 1843, but her relative, Craig Richardson believes that is an error caused by her lying about her age.

    Notes:

    Robert enlisted in the 6th Michigan Cavalry in 1865 and served until the end of the U.S. Civil War. He had been hired to take the place of another conscripted man.

    Robert was injured by a horse either falling on him or stepping on him. While he was still recovering from this injury, he broke his leg while stopping a team of runaway horses. He was permanently injured from this accident, and had to wear a specially made boot on his injured leg.

    He was a farmer and served on the School Board for many years.

    Robert's wife, Jane, served as a nurse during the American Civil War. People came to her from all around to get her help. They called her "A Healer". She would pack a wound with a poultice of bread and hot milk. One time she used mouldy bread for the poultice on a very badly cut leg, and it healed very quickly. People called it a miracle, but the mould was probably producing penicillin. Even though this was before the discovery of antibiotics, Jane always used mouldy bread after that.

He was captured in Virginia on 11 Jun 1864 and was imprisoned at Andersonville, Georgia and Florence, South Carolina. He was honorably discharged on 11 Jun 1865.

    William was a farmer, teamster, and logger. He and his wife started housekeeping in a log cabin but as the family grew they built a larger house. In 1915, he went to Oklahoma to see about homesteading but the land didn't suit him. The family moved to Webberville in 1906. He was village marshall and for many years Deputy Sheriff. He was a hardworking man and his family came first in everything. He had a stroke in 1939 and spent the last five years of his life in bed.

    One reference says his middle name was Lemuel and that he was born in 1854. The name of his wife is uncertain.

    A book could be written about this man. He was a talented stone mason, wood carver and at age 81 was making pony harnesses. He could play the piano (no formal training) and sing. He would make up a song for an occasion on the spot.

    He wrote a column for the Lansing, Michigan newspaper for many years. He always led parades in Lansing on his beautiful horse. When he became old and couldn't get on it, he was hoisted on the horse with a block and tackle.

    He was one of a kind. He had a pet pig (575 pounds) that he would lead to town on a clothesline leash. He had a pet squirrel that always looked for peanuts in his pockets, a quail that perched on his shoulder, a rooster that followed him to put the cogs and cats out, and a toad that hopped out and croacked a "good morning."

    He taught French for a year at Georgetown University, in Georgetown, Kentucky and then went to Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky to teach until 1917.

    He served in France during World War I, and when he returned home, he went into the tourist business, taking parties to Europe every summer.

    In 1929, he went to Ohio State University in Columbus as professor of Romance Languages until he retired in 1960. He and his wife then went to live near their son in Cuyohoga Falls, Ohio.
