Julia was the daughter of Joseph and Martha (McDonald) Garlington.
Anthony married Julia because he "needed a mother for his children" as he said. However, from all the information that is available, Anthony and Julia were happy mates. She was a wonderful mother to his children and was respected by them. According to Dortha Fay, she was called Cousin Julia by some of the children. She was living with the family when John Anthony's wife died in childbirth. She just stayed on and two years later she and Anthony were married.
