Fred had tuberculosis so he moved west from New York for the arid climate, believing he only had six months to live. After several years the dry mountain air in Colorado had imporved his condition and he began in earnest to rebuild his life. In 1900 he founded Munro Mercantile. His business thrived during the early 1900's growing to five locations.

Stanley was born at home on his parents' farm in Elbridge, New York. The family moved to Auburn in about 1905.
Stanley graduated from Auburn High School in 1919 and from Cornell University in 1923. He was a member of the Cornell Glee Club and Alpha Zeta Fraternity. He had average grades.
In 1923, he returned to the family farm and worked with his brother until 1932. Although he enjoyed farming, it was not very profitable.
He married Jessie Hayes in the month that began the great depression. They had three sons.
From 1932 to 1935, he worked in a partnership with a Cornell Professor on a poultry farm in Ithaca, New York. He was to get 25 cents an hour and half the net profits. There were not net profits and he worked 4300 hours in 1933.
He began working for the United States Department of Agriculture in 1935 and transferred to the Treasury Department in about 1955. He worked in Pennsylvania, Texas, Michigan, Virginia and New York, and retired in 1966 with 32 years of service.
He served as a part-time consultant to the Onondaa County Extension Service in Horticulture 1966 - 1970. He was a Garden Writer for Syr. Herald-American 1966 - 1992. He received $10 per column in 1966 and $70 in 1992. He had a full tabloid page, about 1000 words, published in the Stars Magazine.
He was active in church, grange and community affairs. He served in many capacities in the Methodist and Presbyterian Churches, was Deputy State Master for the Grange in Cayuga County, Master of Weedsport and Marcellus Granges, member or chairman on the Marcellus Planning and Zoning Boards (20 years), President of the Marcellus Rotary Club.
Stan's gardening experience was extensive. He was a member and served as an officer in many garden organizations including: President of the Syracuse Men's Garden Club and of the Syracuse Garden Center Association, President of the Men's Garden Clubs of America, Master Gardener for the Cooperative Extension Service, weekly contributing garden writer for the Syracuse Herald American for 28 years, Senior Judge in the American Dahlia Society and Men's Garden Club, and member of numerous other American and English garden societies.
He was well known for his lecture, radio and TV appearances and his speaking talents. He was a skilled parlimentarian and served many organizations in that capacity.
He and his wife traveled extensively visiting all 50 U.S. States and about 24 foreign countries including China, Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Canada, Great Britain, Spain, Portugal, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and nearly all the countries of South America plus three cruises to the Caribbean.
On 25 Dec 1994, Stanley retired from 28 years of writing a weekly column in the "Syracuse Herald American" about the pleasures and problems of gardening
At age 95 he renewed his drivers license for three years. He also attended Rotary Club and church meetings regularly, and played correspondence chess with two opponents. He also read a lot.
His second wife was Hannah Elsie (Malcolm) Green, a widow.
In 1996, Stanley was living at 4645 Aqua Drive in Marcellus, New York.

John "J.R." Munro was born in Rifle, Colorado, but his mother died shortly his birth. He worked with his father in his business, Munro Mercantile, until 1928 when a rift caused J.R. to take his assets and start a bank in Rifle. A year later the Great Depression forced the bank's closing, and J.R. began what would be a series of different jobs.
