Lemuel is a descendant of Hezekiah Meroth who was head of a family that changed their surname to Munroe.
Lemuel served in the Revolutionary War from Sturgridge, Massachusetts starting in 1781 when he apparently lied about his age in order to fight. He was then described as 16 years of age, 5' in height, light complexion, occupation blacksmith. He was on muster rolls in several companies and regiments and on the descriptive list of 20 Feb 1782, he was described as 16 or 17, occupation laborer or farmer, birthplace Dorchester, residence Brookfield, Massachusetts, engaged for the town of Sturbridge. Altogether he served almost four years.
His widow applied for a pension on 20 Apr 1848 in Jackson Township, Jackson County, Michigan. She was 69 years old when she applied. In the application is an affadavit dated 16 May 1842 and signed by her son, William, regarding Lemuel's death. It was stated that he had lived in "Charlestown" an error for Charlton, before he moved to New Berlin, New York.
