1. | Col. Spence Monroe was born in 1727 in , Westmoreland Co., Virginia, USA; died in 1774 in , Westmoreland Co., Virginia, USA. Notes:

His son, President James Monroe, said that his father, Spence Monroe, was "a worthy and respectable citizen possessed of good landed and other property."

Ref (1) says Spence was the son of Andrew [3544].
A plausable theory espoused by Virginia R. Redden in ref 2 says that Spence may have been the posthumous son of Spence Monroe, the first husband of Christian Tyler. The will of Christian Tyler's first husband, Spence, mentions two small children and one unborn child. Most historians believe that the "unborn child" died young, but Redden believes that the child may have been born after Christian's marriage to Andrew Monroe and that the child was named Spence after his deceased biological father.
Spence left a will dated 1774, but there is no date of probate.
Ref (3) calls him Andrew Spence Monroe.

3. | James Monroe, 5th US President (1.Spence1) was born on 28 Apr 1758 in , Westmoreland Co., Virginia, USA; died on 4 Jul 1831 in New York, New York Co., New York, USA; was buried in Richmond, Richmond (city), Virginia, USA. Notes:
After a preliminary course in the local schools, and some tutoring by William Douglas, James entered William and Mary College in 1776. When the Revolutionary War broke out, he joined Washington near New York City where he began serving as a Lieutenant. He was among the soldiers who rowed across the Delaware with Washington. He was wounded at Harlem Heights and was promoted to Captain upon his recovery. Later, as a Major, he served as volunteer aide on the staff of Samuel Sterling. He finished the war as a Lieutenant Colonel in a Virginia unit.
Although he was eager to follow a military career, he was unable to obtain a permanent command when the war ended. He studied law under the supervision of Thomas Jefferson and was admitted to the bar and practiced in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where he served as town councilman, his first public office. He served in official positions for nearly 50 years.
In 1782, at the age of 24, he was elected a member of the Virginia State Assembly. He served as a member of the Continental Congress 1783-1786. He was elected to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of William Grayson. He was reelected in 1791 and resigned in 1794.
He was appointed United States Minister Plenipotentiary to France by President Washington and served until 1796. He was elected Governor of Virginia 1799-1802, and was again appointed Minister Plenipotentiary to France by President Jefferson and served from 12 Jan to 12 Jul 1803. He was appointed to the same post in England and served from 1803 to 1807. He also served as Minister to Spain. He was again elected as Governor of Virginia in 1811 but President Madison appointed him to his Cabinet as Secretary of State and Secretary of War (at the same time) and he served from 1811 to 1817. He was then elected President of the United States for two terms from 1817 to 1825.
While Minister to France under President Washington, he was ridiculed and recalled by Washington. Under President Jefferson, he returned to France with the treaty for the purchase of Louisiana. He was also discredited as Minister to England.
He gained prestige when, as Secretary of War under President Madison, he ordered the forces assembled at New Orleans in the War of 1812.
He was keenly interested in military matters. He enjoyed horseback riding and travel. While a member of Congress, he made a trip on the Great Lakes and down the Ohio River, inspecting posts occupied by British troops and studying the natural resources of the country and the attitude of Indians toward Americans. A connoisseur of art, he purchased for the White House the best Paris afforded.
He was inaugurated as fifth President of the United States on 4 Mar 1817 and served eight years. His administration was known as the "Era of Good Feeling", but in reality it was full of plots and disagreements, one example being the Missouri Compromise. However, during his presidency, legislation of great constructive value was enacted, and Florida was purchased from Spain.
During his second term as President, in 1823, a discussion arose over the possibility of Spain's regaining possession of Florida and in a message to Congress he said: "We should consider any attempt on their part (a foreign power) to extend their system to any portion of this hemisphere as dangerous to our peace and safety..." and also further, "The American Continents, by the free and independent condition which they have assumed and maintained, are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers." Thus was born the famous Monroe Doctrine which has been at the foundation of US policy in the new world ever since.
He retired from the White House to his farm at Oak Hill, Virginia. He died poor in New York City at the home of his daughter on 4 Jul 1831. He was first buried in New York City, but was later re-interred in Richmond, Virginia.
Oak Hill, erected in 1820 by President Monroe, was designed by Thomas Jefferson and the plans were completed by James Hoban, designer and builder of the White House and supervising architect for the Capitol.
President Monroe employed william Benton, an Englishman, to superintend the construction of the mansion under Hoban's supervision and to manage the extensive farming operations of the estate. It is said that Benton served the President "in the triple capacity of steward, counselor, and friend."
James' will was dated 1831 and proved in 1847.

The following is from "Clan Munro" compiled by Alan McNie, published in Jedburgh, Scotland. It is from the chapter entitled "Some Clan Notables".
Munroe, James (1758-1831) Monroe entered US Senate in 1790. He was a critic of Washington and helped organise the Republican party in opposition. He became President in 1816 and sought to maintain a large peacetime army. In his presidency, Mississippi, Illinois, Alabama, Maine and Missouri joined the Union. In 1819 Spain ceded Florida. In the Monroe Doctrine he showed his desire for America's independence, disapproving of European intervention and affirming America's intention of not interfering in the internal affairs of other nations and stating the America's were not to be considered open to further European colonization.

«i»The Capture of the Hessians at Trenton [the painting] by John Trumbull dramatizes the scene of the wounded Lt. James Monroe, who had been injured in the final stages of the Battle of Trenton. Lt. Monroe had been hit by a musket ball, severing an artery. The doctor who is tending him is the same man who had ordered Washington's troops off of his property as they advanced towards Trenton. When Dr. Riker realized they were not the British, but Americans, he volunteered to join them thinking he would be of some help later. Little did anyone know that Dr. Riker would clamp off the severed artery of Lt. Monroe, saving the life of this valiant patriot and future president.«/i»

5. | Andrew Augustine Monroe (1.Spence1) was born in 1764 in Milton, Albemarle Co., Virginia, USA; died on 2 Dec 1826 in , Fauquier Co., Virginia, USA. Notes:
"Burke's Presidential Families" says that Andrew only had two sons. His first wife was Frances Garnett (or Garrett). Ref 2 says Andrew and Frances had two sons.
Andrew attended William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Andrew is believed to have purchased a farm near Batesville in 1781, where he lived for four years.
He served in the Navy during the American Revolutionary War, and moved to Scott County, Kentucky from Albemarle County, Virginia about 1793.
In 1816 he was living on a farm which his brother, President James Monroe, purchased on Limestone, below Milton.
The Johnson reference says he may have been born in 1764 and may have died in 1826. Ref 4 says he died in 1828.
Several references give Andrew's death place as Milton County, Virginia, but there has never been a Milton County, Virginia. Other references say he died in Fauquier County, Virginia.
There is much confusion and probably a lot of error in this family record. There is another Andrew Monroe [529] married to another Ann Bell in a completely different family line. Is this an error or just an interesting coincidence? Care must be taken here because of the many similar names at about the same time and place.

Joseph was born in Westmoreland County and named for his maternal uncle, Hon. Joseph Jones of Virginia. He was married three times: first, in Albemarle County in 1790 to Elizabeth Kerr; second on 27 Oct 1801 to Sally Gordon; and third on 19 Oct 1808 to Elizabeth Glasscock.
From 1804 until 1810 he was Clerk of the District and Circuit court as shown by a tablet on the wall of the Northumberland County Virginia Court House.
He moved west and died in Franklin, Missouri on 5 Aug 1824.
**********
Joseph was sent to Edinburgh University in Scotland by his brother, James. After failing there, He studied law in Virginia and failed there also.
Col. Joseph Jones Monroe became a member of the Albemarle Count bar. He served as private secretary to President Monroe, and was Clerk of the district and Circuit Court of Northumberland County, Virginia (1804-1810) as shown by a tablet on the wall of the Northumberland County Court House. He was appointed Commonwealth Attorney of Albemarle County in 1811.
His first wife was a daughter of James Kerr.
As a widower, he moved west, probably to Kentucky with his daughter and son-in-law. In 1819, he moved to Franklin, Howard County, Missouri where he was one of the first settlers in the county. There he married Mrs. Hulda (Hubbard) Davis, a daughter of Rev. Hubbard, one of the earliest Baptist preachers in North Missouri.
In 1821, he moved to Keytesville, Missouri.
According to the Missouri "Intelligencer", the first newspaper established west of St. Louis, Joseph "was a man of warm heart, of undoubted integrity, of polished education and inestimable worth."
Refs 1 and 2 say Joseph was born in 1772.
One reference gives his death date as 6 Jul 1824 and his birth date as about 1772. Another reference gives his death date as 1831. His first wife, Eilzabeth Kerr (or Carr) died in childbirth. His second wife was Sally (or Sarah or Sara) Gordon. His fourth wife was Huldah Hubbard (or Hulda Davis). Guilford says he died in Keytesville, Charlton County, Missouri, and Holmes says he died 6 Jul 1824 in Howard County, Missouri.
"Burke's Presidential Families" says that he only had one daughter in his first marriage, and that he only married three times.

His death came at a difficult time for his father because just prior to this, Gabriel Prosser, leader of a slave revolt, had been captured along with 35 others and all of Richmond gathered at the Governor's Mansion when Prosser was brought before Monroe. Prosser was tried 30 Apr 1804, found guilty and hanged.
James was unable to attend the erection of a headstone over his son's grave. He asked John Clarke to attend to this, directing that it bear only the initials "J.S.M."

22. | Augustine Garnett Monroe (5.Andrew2, 1.Spence1) was born in 1792 in , Albemarle Co., Virginia, USA; died on 25 Sep 1866 in New Richmond, Ohio, USA. Notes:
Error alert: Ref 3 says Augustine Garnett "Gus" Monroe was a prisoner on the British ship, "Jersey", and that he was exiled to the United States when he was 16 years old. This doesn't fit with the fact that his father was born in the United States.
He was admitted to the Albemarle County, Virginia bar in 1817, (ref 2 says 1815). He lived in Alabama and Houston County, Texas.
The Johnson reference says Augustine was a son of Andrew's first wife, Frances Garrett.

26. | Lucy Jane Monroe (6.Joseph2, 1.Spence1) was born on 26 Jul 1800 in Charlotte, Essex Co., Virginia, USA; died on 13 Feb 1873 in Dallas, Dallas Co., Texas, USA. Notes:
**********
The following is from the Johnson reference:
Lucy Jane Monroe Browder, a niece of U.S. President James Monroe, was the matriarch of the "Dallas Browders" who were important in the early life of both Dallas and our church, The first United Methodist Church of Dallas. Old City Park, Dallas was originally their homestead and its productive spring provided the earliest source of water for the village, other than individual wells.
Lucy and her sons, Edward and Isham, arrived in Texas in 1845, from Missouri. They first owned land in northern Ellis County but by 1850 lived in Dallas County.
Edward served as Dallas' first district Clerk from 1850 to 1874, was an initial member of Tannehill Masonic Lodge, and was one of the first stewards, class leaders and Sunday School superintendents at First Methodist Church . During the Civil War he was elected Captain of Company C in the Eighteenth Texas Cavalry. Edward's brother Isham also served in Company C but died of disease in 1862.
After the war, Lucy and Edward bought and sold land in Dallas. In 1865, Lucy conveyed to Edward the approximately sixty acres containing Browder's Spring. In 1871, the Texas Legislature passed a bill granting right-of-way for the Southern Pacific Railroad with a short rider requiring that in pass within one mile of Broder's Spring, thus assuring the growth of Dallas.
In the early 1870's Edward Browder developed Browder's Addition, a fashionable suburb southeast of Dallas, between town and Browder's Spring. In 1872 the city named Browder Street after Edward. The area near Browder's Spring was established as the first city park in honor of the 1876 national centennial, and a portion remains today as Old City Park.
Edward Browder died in 1878. The next year, his son, Pleasant Browder, sold Browder's Spring to a private company, which delivered water to Dallas customers. The spring was later sold to the city. Dallas used water from the spring for about eight years before the town's need outgrew the spring's capacity. The spring was reactivated for a short time during the long drought of 1908-1913.
Lucy is buried in the Old Dallas Cemetery in downtown Dallas - (Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery).

"My father had three brothers, named, James, John and Joseph. James was a general in the northern army and his regiment guarded the capital at Washington during the Civil War. He died in harness and his remains lie in the Nathonal cemetery at Washington. A life-like painting of him is now hanging in the armory in New York City. John, his brother, was trader and left his family well provided for in New York City. His brother, Joseph, was a priest in New york City. Mrs. Douglas Robinson of New York City, who was a grandchild of President James Monroe, was a first cosin of my father, and her son married a sister of President Theodore Roosevelt.
My father left Virbinia when he was 18 years old and went to New York City, and my recollection is that he came to Texas in 1842 or 1843, landing at the west end of Galveston Island, instead of the east end, which is now Galveston City. A short time after this he went by ship to Liberty and took a steamboat to Alabama Crossing, on Trinity River, in Houston County. There he remained and went into the mercantile business working with Jacob Albright. In 1846 he married Jacob's daughter, Rachel. He was the oldest child in the family and the only one who came south.
My father had the first wood cook stove that was in Houston County, and had it put up at home, but the negro cook said she couldn't cook on that thing, and the only way he could get her to use it was to have the fireplace walled up. After that she would sneak out to her cabin and cook things in the fireplace. It took our family a long time to get her to use the stove.
A. T. Monroe was one of the most enterprising men who ever lived in Crockett. Soon after moving to Crockett from Alabama Crossing he build a home on the main street of Crockett--the very house is still standing in good condition. It is now the home of George W. Crook and was built in 1854. The large hewed oak sills in the house are as sound today as when the house was built. The outer walls were weather boarded with good, heart lumber, sawed by H. F. Craddock and dressed by hand. The ceiling was of the same character of lumber. The space between the walls was filled with brick and lathing placed on the inside for plastering, which was never completed. In 1880, a daughter of Uncle Dan Coleman sold the place to Oliver C. Aldrich, who lived there until his death in 1889. After that the author became the owner of the property and sold it to George W. Crook and his wife in 1911. The author has heard the old man Salathiel Robert, a brick mason, say that he built the chimneys to the house, and they are standing today in good condition.

The following is from the Johnson reference:
Edward belonged to the Methodist Church.
