    Notes:

    Marion was named after Marion Baker, who was his father's secretary when he was Mayor of New Orleans. She later became the literary editor of the Time Democrat newspaper in New Orleans.

    Marion Baker Monroe became an evangelist and a worker in the Methodist Church and later took up the call with the Free Church of God and preached in the area around New Orleans and on the streets to whomever would listen to him. He died of pneumonia and renal failure after contracting the disease while preaching on a rainy night, or so his death notice says.

    The following is from the New Orleans, Louisiana Times Picayune newspaper - 1916:

    "Local Evangelist Answers Last Call

    Street Preacher Passes Away Here

    The Rev. M. B. Monroe Had traveled Extensively as Missionary.

    Many friends attended the funeral of the Rev. Marion Baker Monroe, which took place Thursday afternoon from the residence , 1500 Magazine Street. The Rev. J. T. Hawyer officiated and interment was in the Munroe tomb in Fireman's Cemetery.

    Mr. Monroe was a native of New Orleans and was 57 years of age. He was a son of Mayor John Tompkins Monroe, the executive of the city at the time that New Orleans was captured by Admiral Farragut.

    As a young man, Mr. Monroe exhibited considerable mechanical genius and did some very expert work in cabinet making. He made several small models of the street cars that were in use in those days and also of steamboats which were such exact copies that comment was made upon them. Later he turned his talent to good account in inventing the Monroe Ladders and lawn awnings which were sold to a considerable extent in New Orleans.

    After his marriage to Miss Mary Ellen Thomas, Mr. Monroe felt a call to Christ and became an evangelist. He became an ardent worker in the Methodist Church and afterwards took up evangelical work for the Free Church o God. In this capacity he traveled about the streets of New Orleans preaching to whomever would listen and exhorting men and women to lead Christian lives. He also made tours of a number of cities preaching in the streets and continuing his good work. His death is attributed to his zeal for the cause as he died from congestion of the lungs resulting from a cold contracted on a rainy night.

    Mr. Monroe was the father of fourteen children, none of whom with their mother, survive him. A sister, Mrs. Thomas Green; a brother, Robert E. Lee Monroe, and six grandchildren are also among the mourners. The children are John T. Monroe, of Carriere, Miss.; Mrs. Albert Risser, Marion Baker Monroe, Bleaney T.; Marcus M.; Robert W.; Charles Behrman; Myrtle and Daniel.
