Notes:

The obituary in the Oneda Dispatch read, "Oneida lost one of its best known and most respected citizens in the passing of George L. Munroe..." While nothing he did rated being carved in stone, he was an outstanding success as a human being with a real zest for living.

Charles' obituary in the Onieda Dispatch says he was born in Cleveland, Oswego County, New York.

Charles attended school in Dunbarton, Oneida County, New York until he was 14. He then left school and began working at the Dunbarton glass foundry, becoming head cutter. He later became a member of the firm of Munroe and Co., glass manufacturers, which was known all over the US.

In about 1883, he moved to Onieda, New York and continued in the glass business. He then worked in real estate for three or four years until 1 Jan 1897 when he formed a successful undertaking firm with Seth D. Baldwin

Charles was universally respected as a man of the highest integrity of character and enjoyed the confidence and friendship of all with whom he came in contact. He was always courteous, warm hearted and a kind benefactor, and possessed a genial nature which endeared him to everyone.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting and outdoor life generally, and possessed a strong sense of humor.

He was a director in the Farmers and Merchants State Bank, a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Masons, Odd Fellows, Elks, Knights of Pythias, and the Oneida Chamber of Commerce. He was a trustee of the Oneida Chapter No. 21, Order of the Eastern Star.

The following is from an obituary in an Oneida newspaper.

"Death of Miss Ella Munroe--Miss Ella Munroe, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Loring Munroe, of this village, died of typhoid fever, on Monday afternoon last, after nearly a month's illness, aged about 23 years. Miss Munro was a highly accomplished young lady, and her death is severely felt by her parents, who some years since lost two daughters, afer brief illness, of scarlet fever. Miss Munroe possessed rare musical talents, and, with her younger brother, who remains at home, was wont to entertain her parents and friends as but comparatively few have power to do. Her death will be deeply regretted by the society of young people in which she moved. The funeral takes place this (Thursday) afternoon at 2 o'clock, from the residence on Broad Street, Rev. S. Jessup officiating, and the remains buried in Glenwood Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Munroe have three sons living, two of whom reside at Dunbarton, Oneida County."

The following obituary is from an Oneida newspaper dated 22 Jun 1936.

"Anthony B. Munroe, 75, banker here for more than half a century and one of the most widely known residents in this section, died suddenly early Sunday morning in his home, 406 Broad Street. He suffered a heart attack Saturday morning.

Entering the banking field while still in his teens, Mr. Munroe was first associated with the Oneida Savings bank. After the death of his father, Loring Munroe, who founded the Farmers and Merchants bank, he became head of that institution until it went out of existence many years ago.

Becoming a stockholder in the Oneida Valley National bank, he was later named a trustee and then president. He held the latter position until he resigned about four year ago to become chairman of the board of directors of the bank, which office he held at his death.

Always interested in the civic welfare of the city, altho never aspiring to any political office, Mr. Munroe was instrumental in bringing about many public improvements and was prime mover for erection of the present nurses home of the Broad Stret Hospital.

Active in the affairs of the first Presbyterian church, he had been a trustee for 25 years. Born March 13, 1861 at Bernhard's Bay, Oneida Lake, a son of Loring and Jane Munroe, he had resided in this city for about 59 years. For some time he conducted a clothing store in Madison Street, but the major part of his life was spent in banking circles.

Mr. Munroe was a member of Oneida Lodge 767 Elks, and a director of the Oneida Savings Bank as well as many other local organizations..."
