"Dr. Alexander was successively min at Dunfermline, Kinglassie and Wemyss, Prof of Divinity at St Andrews, and Principal of the University and min of the High Kirk of Edinburgh, arms recorded in Lyon Register, deposed 1690 and died 1698 (SHS Misc v 198-209); he m 1673 Anna Logan (d 1674) & 1676 Marion Collace (ib 209); children included Dr James (1680-1752) physician to Bethlem Hospital, London, through whom the family was carried on (Mackenzie 437, CMM iii 27-31)."

The fourth son of Hugh of Fyrish and Kildermorie was born in 1648 and was the first of the family to spell his name as MONRO. He was awarded a degree of M.A. from the Church at St. Mary's College, St. Andrews in 1669; was ordained in Holy Orders in 1673; made D.D. by his Alma Mater in 1682. Appointed Principal of University of Edinburgh in 1685 and served until 1689 when he resigned over differences in the monarchial sucession of William and Mary as he was an avowed follower of the Stuarts. He removed to London in 1691 and died in 1698 at age 50.

Rev. Alexander was twice married and father of nine children, although only two children - a son James and daughter, Elizabeth - survived to adulthood. James - born at Wemyss in 1680 - carried on the representation of the family. He was the renown Dr. James Monro, founder of a line of famous Monro physicians and other distinguished professional men.

Alexander became the representative of the family upon the death of his three elder brothers, who died without sons, although Alexander does not appear to have succeeded to the hereditary property of Fyrish.

Alexander studied for the Church at St. Salvator's College, St. Andrews, where he graduated M.A. in 1664. In 1665, when only seventeen years old, he was persuaded by a relative, Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Munro, to go abroad with him. He entered Lord Dumbarton's Regiment and accompanied it to France, where he was on active military duty for two and a half years. He then returned to Scotland and resumed his former studies for the Church at St. Mary's College, St. Andrews, and took his degree of M.A. in 1669.

At some point in his life, Alexander began writing his surname "Monro."

He entered into Holy Orders, and was ordained in 1673. On 7 Apr 1673, he was admitted to the second charge of the town and parish of Dunfermline. He was transferred to Kinglassie, county Fife, on 26 Mar 1676, and then to Wemyss on 26 Apr 1678 where he was presented by the Town Council of Edinburgh.

He received his D.D. in Feb 1682 and before Mar 1683, he resigned his charge at Wemyss because he had been nominated by Archbishop Sharp, the Chancellor, to the Professorship of Divinity at St. Mary's, which had changed its name to New College, St. Andrews. Alexander had been serving as Principal of the university 1682-1683.

On 9 Dec 1685, Alexander was appointed Principal of the University of Edinburgh, and on the same day he was nominated by the Town council to the Second or Collegiate Charge of the High Church of that city, to which he was inducted on 30 Dec 1685. Dr. Monro was to receive 2000 merks as Principal of Edinburgh University and 1600 merks as incumbent of the High Church, later renamed St. Giles.

A lengthy biography of Alexander can be found in ref 1.

    Notes:

Dr. John Monro, F.R.C.P. was educated at Merchant Tailors' School from 1731 to 1733, at which time he was elected a scholar of St. John's College, Oxford. He received his B.A. from Oxford on 13 May 1737 and his M.A. on 11 Jul 1740. He became a Fellow of the College and in Apr 1741, he was nominated as one of the Radcliffe Travelling Fellows, on which University foundation he continued until 1751.

He received his B.M. on 10 Dec 1743 and entered the University of Leyden on 10 Mar 1745. He visited Paris, Italy, and Germany, and during his absence, he received his M.D. from Oxford on 27 Jun 1747, having migrated from St. John's to University College.

On 24 Jul 1751, he was appointed Joint-Physician of Bethlehem and Bridewell Hospital in London, as an assistant to his father, whose health was declining. When his father died the following year, he was appointed his successor.

John and his first wife, Elizabeth Culling, were married by John's brother, Rev. Thomas Monro, B.D.

John was a Candidate of the College of Physicians on 25 Jun 1752, and a Fellow on 25 Jun 1753. He was Censor in 1754, 1759, 1763, 1768, 1778, and 1785, and delivered the Harveian Lecture in 1757. His only published writings were his "Harveian Oration," delivered in 1757 and a pamphlet entitled "Remarks on Dr. Battie's Treatise on Madness," a feeling tribute to his father's memory.

He restricted the practice of his profession almost exclusively to insanity, in the treatment of which he was considered to have attained a greater eminence and success than any of his contemporaries.

In Jan 1783, he had an attack of paralysis, after which he gradually retired from his practice.

He lived for a long time at 53 Bedford Square, but in the beginning of 1791, he took up residence at Hadley, Near Barnet, County Middlesex, where he died.

He purchased the "Houghton" from his uncle in 1782 for 4500 pounds and commanded it from that year until 1792, when he sold it for 7400 pounds.

After completing ten voyages to Calcutta and other parts of India between 1767 and 1791, he relinquished the sea.

On 19 Mar 1790, he acquired the freehold of the house and estate of Hadley, and when he returned from his last voyage, he took up his residence there early in 1791. In 1794, he moved to Enflied Chase, where he remained until 1802. He then returned to Hadley, where he died. He was buried in St. Mary's Churchyard, where his son, Cecil erected a handsome monument to his memory.

Ref (1) says James and his first wife had no children (p. 440) but on page 444, it lists 7 children.

  6. 26.  Dr. Thomas MonroDr. Thomas Monro Descendancy chart to this point (16.John3, 5.James2, 1.Alexander1) was born in 1759 in London, , Greater London, England; died on 14 May 1833 in Bushey, Middlesex, England; was buried in Churchyard, Bushey, Middlesex, England.

    Notes:

Thomas received his early education at Stanmore, Middlesex, under Dr. Parr, and at Harrow. He entered Oriel College, Oxford, where he received his B.A. on 4 Dec 1780, M.A. on 15 Jul 1783, B.M. on 14 Jan 1785, and M.D. on 24 May 1787.

He was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians on 19 Apr 1791, was Censor in 1792, 1799 and 1812, Harveian Orator in 1799, and was named Elect on 28 Nov 1811. On 19 Jul 1787, he was appointed Assistant Physician of Bethlehem Hospital and became Principal Physician on 2 Feb 1792, succeeding his father in that post. He was Principal Physican until Jun 1816 when he resigned in favor of his son, Dr. Edward Thomas Monro. Soon after resigning, he retired from the practice of his profession

Thomas was a devoted admirer of the fine arts, and the patron of Joseph M. W. Turner, the celebrated English landscape painter, William Hunt, the eminent water-color artist, and others almost equally distinguished. John Ruskin, the great art critic and author, says in his "Notes" on Turner, dated Mar 1878, that "his true master was Dr. Monro; to the practical teaching of that first patron, and the wise simplicity of method of water-color study, in which he was disciplined by him and companioned by Giston, the healthy and constant development of the greater power is primarily to be attributed; the greatness of the power itself, it is impossible to overestimate."

Thomas attended King George III during his last illness.
