George was a tall handsome man. He entered the army and was a non-commissioned officer in the 78th Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs). When that regiment was in India, his fine figure, martial bearing, and good conduct secured for him the admiration and affection of a wealthy Indian lady, who bought him out of the army. They were married, and lived happily together for many years. They had no children.
