    Notes:

    William was said to be a "Huguenot refugee of noble birth." He may have been one of three brothers who were deported from Scotland as indentured servants for following "Bonnie Prince Charlie". One supposedly went to Massachusetts, one to Annapolis, and one to New Orleans.

    The following are notes which were copied by Frank A. Munroe, Jr. from "an old notebook" which cannot be found now.

    "Wm. Munroe had Thomas Bailey bound the 11th day of August 1774 and to serve 3 1/2 years"

    "1776 entered to share with Jibbert August 17, 1775."

    "1788 went to live at Edward's house May 7. Left there February 5, 1779." (The 1788 date must be incorrect. It probably should be 1778. It is not known who Edward was.)

    "John Munroe went to Annapolis June 22, 1780 to go an apprentice being 17 years old August 6th next."

    These notes carry a lot of unknown meanings except that John Munroe was William's oldest son and the dates correspond exactly with the date of his birth.

    Notes:

    Rebecca is mentioned in an interesting deed dated 4 Oct 1801 by which "John Nelson of Hartford County and Rebecca his wife" deeded a plot of ground on Corn Hill Street in Annapolis "in consideration of the natural love and affection which they...bear unto the said John Munroe...and in consideration of the sum of five shillings current money." In the endorsement it says that Rebecca appeared before two Justices of the Peace of Hartford County "and being examined privately and out of the hearing of her said husband acknowledged that she relinquished her rights of dower to the said ground and that she did the same willingly and freely without being induced thereto by fear of threats or ill usage of her husband or fear of his displeasure."

    Notes:

    Thomas graduated from St. John's College and obtained his M.D. degree from the University of Maryland. He went to Rushville, Schuyler County, Illinois, around 1837. In a letter that he wrote to his sister, Rebecca, he said that he did not like Rushville and missed his family. This must have been written before he met Annis Hinman, his future wife. Most of the letter admonishes Rebecca to devote more time to religion.

    Thomas served as a medical officer with an Illinois regiment in the Civil War.

    In 1850, Thomas was a physician living with his family in Rushville, Schuyler County, Illinois.

    Notes:

    It is believed that James graduated from St. John's College.

    When he was still quite young, he served as a county commissioner of Anne Arundel County. He was elected Mayor of Annapolis in 1871 and again in 1873, serving 4 years. He was the first Republican mayor of Annapolis since the Civil War.

    For 25 years, he served as superintendent of the First Methodist Church Sunday School and as a trustee and recording steward and treasurer of that church. At one time he was said to have been in business longer than any other merchant in Annapolis. He was in the dry goods trade for 47 consecutive years. He also was a long time member of the Board of Visitors and Governors of St. John's College. (Baltimore Sun, 29 Sep 1896)

    When James suffered a stroke in about 1886, his son, Frank, quit law school in Baltimore and came home to manage the store.

He served in the Signal Service and was accidentally drowned 10 Apr 1878 at Rice Path, North Carolina. His body was found 12 Apr on the beach of Bogue Banks near Beaufort, North Carolina, and was shipped by his friends to Annapolis, Maryland.
