It is believed that James graduated from St. John's College.
When he was still quite young, he served as a county commissioner of Anne Arundel County. He was elected Mayor of Annapolis in 1871 and again in 1873, serving 4 years. He was the first Republican mayor of Annapolis since the Civil War.
For 25 years, he served as superintendent of the First Methodist Church Sunday School and as a trustee and recording steward and treasurer of that church. At one time he was said to have been in business longer than any other merchant in Annapolis. He was in the dry goods trade for 47 consecutive years. He also was a long time member of the Board of Visitors and Governors of St. John's College. (Baltimore Sun, 29 Sep 1896)
When James suffered a stroke in about 1886, his son, Frank, quit law school in Baltimore and came home to manage the store.

28. | George Walter Munroe (13.James3, 7.Grafton2, 1.John1) was born on 27 Sep 1853; died on 31 Dec 1929 in Fayetteville, Cumberland Co., North Carolina, USA. Notes:
George graduated from St. John's College in 1872. He became associated with his father in the merchantile business in Annapolis and pursued that career for the rest of his life.
He lived in Southern Pines, North Carolina, for many years. He had been brought up in the Methodist faith, but during his residence in Southern Pines, he affiliated with Emmanuel Episcopal Church there and served as a delegate to two conventions of the Diocese of North Carolina.
He is described as a dapper little man, very slight, who always wore silk gloves. As a boy, Frank A. Munroe, Jr., remembered his Uncle George (perhaps mistakenly) as something of a "black sheep" and that he had been married and divorced at some time before he married Dinah "Nina" E. McKee.
George died in the hospital in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Mary Anne "May" Munroe married Fred Roland Brainard, who graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1880. Lieutenant Brainard was aboard the USS Kearsarge when it grounded on a reef south of Jamaica. He and one enlisted man sailed 800 miles in a sixteen foot dinghy, to Aspinwal (later named Colon), Panama to cable the news to the Navy Department and to attempt to find help for the ship. It is thought that the difficulties of this sailing trip brought on Fred's early retirement from the Navy and his death. (The USS Kearsarge was the ship that sank the CSS Alabama in the U.S. Civil War.)

Frank graduated from St. John's College in 1885. He was a member of its first football team. He started law school in Baltimore, but when his father suffered a stroke, he gave up law and returned home to manage the store. When his father died in 1896, Frank took over the store and ran it until he sold it in May 1929.
In 1909, Frank was elected to the City Council. In 1912, he became a Judge of the Orphans' Court of Anne Arundel County. In 1935, he was appointed by the Governor to be a member of the County Board of Educatation, and served as its president for 15 years being reappointed by Democratic and Republican governors every four years. Frank was always a Republican and was elected Clerk of the Court in 1934 for four years. In 1946, at the age of 80, he was elected County Commissioner by a huge majority.

Frank married the daughter of John Wilson and Matilda (Davidson) Inglehart. It is not known why her surname is Hall. Perhaps she was previously married.

Katherine's second husband, William Larned Marcy was the son of Samuel Marcy, who was killed in 1862, while serving as the Captain of the USS Vincennes in Admiral Farragut's Blocade Squadron. His grandfather was five times Governor of New York.
William worked as a cowpuncher in the west and a druggist in Annapolis. He was the first Chairman of the State Roads Commission and was responsible for Maryland's good roads in the 1920's. He had the ability to tell the most outrageous tales (for that time) in mixed company. In about 1922, he taught "Social Hygiene" to the high school senior class of boys and girls, which caused quite a flap in town.
