James owned a buggy-making factory in Paterson, New Jersey and property along Broadway in Paterson. He and Jarusia (Annie) Ann Stilville Cozine, his wife, lived on the corner of 6th and E. 18th St.
The 1860 census lists an unmarried 34 year old James Monroe as a blacksmith in Paterson. The 1880 census lists him as a carriage maker. The 1900 census says Annie had 4 children, 1 still living. Also, an 11 year old white servant girl is listed as living with them.

Martin is listed as a clerk in Paterson, New Jersey (1900). He served as a second lieutenant on the staff of General Phil Kearny in the Civil War. He was the planner and warden of Greystone Psychiatric Hospital, the State Hospital for the Insane, in Morris Plains, New Jersey.
Martin's wife, Frances, was from Paterson, New Jersey. The 1900 census says they had 5 children.
