The following is a transcription of RW Munro's genealogy notes:

[Alexander Munro] «i»Only son of Hugh Munro of Ardullie (fl 1581/1599). Succeeded father; 'in Obsdale'; sold Ardullie to cousin Hugh (d.1659); m (1) ____ Keith, with issue - Hugh, John; m(2) Agnes Tarrell, with issue - George, Alexander, Robert, Catherine. Sale /purchase of Ardullie was in 1619 (Inverness Sasines). Alexander of Ardullie fl 1560, 1578, 1581 is presumably his grandfather; Mackenzie 306 mistakenly attached the nickname 'Cruachan' to the grandson, whereas it was clearly applied to grandfather in 'Tree' & 'Chron Acc'.

  1. 11.  Catherine MunroCatherine Munro Descendancy chart to this point (3.Florence2, 1.Hugh1) was born est 1627; and died.

    Notes:

Error alert: It is very hard to estimate Catherine's birth date and make any sense out of it. Catherine was the 4th great granddaughter of Hugh Munro, I of Coul. Her husband, John was the great grandson of the same Hugh Munro, I of Coul, so there is a difference of 3 generations between Catherine and her husband. Expanding the dates as much as possible in John's line and compacting them as much as possible in Catherine's line still leaves nearly 50 years difference in their ages. I'm leaving that age difference as it is until I get more accurate information.

He also married a Dutch woman, Elleta Bone, but they had no children.

Shortly after the Revolution of 1688, they both returned to Scotland, having obtained a contract for dyeing the cloth used for the uniforms of King William III's army.

Andrew Munro in Coul, litster, learned the dyeing trade in Holland with his brother, Hugh. After the Revolution, they won an army contract.

He settled at Coul in Alness parish in 1716. He was probably the compiler or sponsor of a genealogy showing his family's descent from Hugh Munro of Coul [2763].

His second wife, Kate, was the daughter of John Beaton of Culnaskeath. Andrew and Kate had three daughters in addition to the children listed.

"...Andrew m 1 Ann Ogg and had Alexander and James then Kate Beaton dr of John of Culnaskeath and had John, Robert, Hector, William, Hugh and 3 drs..."

Andrew joined his brother, Hugh, in Holland to learn the textile dyeing trade. When they secured King William's contract for dyeing the cloth for army uniforms, they returned to Edinburgh.

Later, Andrew returned to his native county of Ross and settled for a few years at Contin. From there he moved to Balintraid, Kilmuir-Easter, and then to Delny and then to Aldie, near Tain. In about May 1716, he moved to Coul, near Alness.

He was an elder in the Alness church during part of the ministry of Rev. Daniel Mackillican. At a meeting of the Presbytery of Dingwall on 24 Apr 1717, it was reported that the congregation had chosen Andrew, ruling elder, to represent the the Parish at the next meeting of the Synod of Ross.

For several years he acted as factor for Albert Munro of Ferrytown and Coul.

It is believed that Andrew was the author of the Coul Munro manuscript, a valuable genealogical document.

    Notes:

John was an elder in the Alness Church.

He was one of the "considerable persons" of Ross and Sutherland who signed a letter to King George I in Dec 1714, imploring his Royal mercy for Simon Lord Lovat on his return from France at the instigation of Major James Fraser of Castleleathers.

He took an active part in the preliminary proceedings for filling up the vacancy caused in the parish by the death of Rev. Daniel Mackilliean on 22 Jun 1724. When a dispute arose between John and Captain George Munro of Culcairn on the one had and the rest of the church over who should be the next minister, John took the keys to the church and refused to open the door. The new minister, Rev. James Fraser, was ordained in the church yard while John and George attempted to disrupt the meeting by talking to each other during the ordination. Fraser remained minister and did a good job.

"William of Teanard married Jean daughter to Hugh Minister of Tayne."

"For Hugh min of Tain see P/3; William later m Christian eldest dr of George of Culrain R/11 (FW 359, 377; Morrisons Dictonary 9200); dr Mary m Donald Munro, Balnacraig of Contilich, later Kilishie (FW 378, 400)."

William took a deep interest in all the parochial affairs of Kiltearn. He worked hard to get a minister settled in the parish as successor to the Rev. Hugh Campbell, who was transferred to Kilmuir-Wester (later renamed Knockbain) on 15 Feb 1721.

On 27 Mar 1727, William presented a petition to the Session of Kiltearn, "craving that he might be allowed to plant his seat in the same place which was formerly possest by his predecessors." The Session after consideration, pointed out that all the heritors had a particular interest in the disposition of the pews and seats, and appointed their clerk to issue circulars to all the heritors, requesting them to meet "sessionally here on the 24th of April next, in order to concert proper measures to that effect, when the requisite proportion of room belonging to every heritor may be likewise fully determined."

On 21 Aug 1727, David Bethune of Culnaskea, as proxy for William Munro of Teanoird, presented a petition to the session craving that Teanoird's seat should be "put in its own place which was enjoyed by his predecessors these several generations by past, and which is in a manner masterfully possessed by John Munro, tacksman of Kiltearn, against all justice and equity... and craving, seeing that the heritors of the parish are repairing their seats, that the heritors may be pleased to order the said John Munro to remove his seat and put it in its proper place." The Session referred the matter to the heritors.

On 18 Dec of the same year, William presented a third petition, requestion that "his seat be put in its proper place where it was before." John Munro also "gave in a petition for doing him justice with respect to his seat, submitting himself to the decretion of the heritors."

The heritors met on the same day and agreed upon the following arrangements: "1. That John Munro, tacksman of Kiltearn, his seat should be removed to the Easter gavel and and Teanaird's seat placed where it was before. 2. That the seat of Kiltearn be brought up close to join Teanaird's seat, and Culcairn's seat be made to come up to join close to the seat of Kiltearn, by which means the room of the seat of Balcony will be enlarged." This allocation of the seats was agreed to by all concerned and William was quite satisfied.

Apparently, William left no heirs and so the estate of Teanoird passed into the hands of Sir Harry Munro of Foulis.
