John Munroe

Notes:

John Munroe was admitted to the church 1 Feb 1699 together with his father, and sisters Martha Commee, Elizabeth Rugg and Hannah Pierce. He was subscriber for the meeting-house in 1692, and was taxed for the purchase of ministerial land in 1693. He was one of the assessors in 1699, 1714 and 1720; constable in 1700, selectman in 1718, 1719 and 1726; also treasurer in 1718, 1719 and 1720. He was employed several years to ring the bell and sweep out the meeting-house, which shows that he did not consider it derogatory to perform this type of work.

On 13 May 1709, he bought ten acres of land adjoining his farm in Cambridge. On 22 Feb 1723, he gave 20 acres in Lexington to his son, John. This land was sold back to John Sr. in Dec 1725 when John Jr. migrated to New London. John Sr. continued to acquire property in Lexington. In the last deed found for him, he bought land adjacent to that of his deceased father, William.

According to the Andrews reference, John and others had 900 acres granted to them in 1735 for services rendered in an Indian fight at Lamprey River on 6 Jun 1690.

John was honored with the office of Lieutenant in the military. He along with others, had nine hundred acres of land granted to them in 1735, for services rendered in the Indian fight at Lamprey River, 6 Jun 1690.

Lucius R. Paige in his "History of Cambridge, Mass. 1630 to 1877," speculates that Hannah Marrett was John's second wife, but R. S. Munroe argues convincingly in his book about the Lexington Munroes that she was John's first wife.

John's estate was administered by his son William, appt. 25 Nov 1753. No distribution is included in surviving documents. The total value of the inventory of 1 apr 1754 was £791.15.00.

William was frequently called the "black-smith" to distinguish him from others of the same name, one of whom was known as the "shoe-maker", for the same reason. His will is dated 25 Mar 1777, and was proved 4 Jun 1783. It mentions his wife, Tabitha, daughters Phebe Caldwell, Dorcas parker, Bridget Maxwell, Sara Barber, Lucy hobbs, Susanna and son Oliver.

In Nov 1753, William was appointed executor of the estate of his deceased father.

His will dated 18 Feb 1789 and proved 1 May 1798, mentions his wife Deliverance, sons Josiah, Natha, Thaddeus, Daughters Rachel, Mary Underwood, Bethia, Deliverance Winshiip, Elizabeth Buckman, and a child or Ann Nurse deceased.

Ref 2 says Marrett was probably born in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Bridget's husband, Colonel Hugh Maxwell, had no advantage of school when he was a child. His father had died suddenly in 1759, his body was found in the road supposed to have been killed by falling from his horse.

Hugh served in the French War and was in the battle near Lake George in 1755 and in Fort William Henry when it was surrendered to the French in 1756. He was captured by the Indians, but managed to escape.

Gov. Pownal of Massachusetts appointed him an Ensign in Brigadier Ruggle's Regiment on 31 Mar 1759. At the close of the war in 1759, he returned home to take up his plough and surveyor's instruments.

In 1773 he moved to Charlemont, Hampshire County, Massachusetts (now Heath, Franklin County, Massachusetts). He was elected a member to the first Provincial Congress which convened at Salem, 7 Oct 1774. When he came home, he helped raise an army and was made Lieutenant. He was promoted to Captain in the regiment of Colonel William Prescott at Cambridge 26 May 1775. He was wounded at Bunker Hill on 17 Jun 1775 when a ball passed through his right shoulder. He was in the operations of Long Island, New York in Aug and Sep 1776 and was in the battles of Trenton and Princeton and Burgoyne. He also saw service at Stillwater and Saratoga.

Having joined the southern army in Nov, he shared the hardships of Valley Forge and was at the battle of Monmouth in Jun 1778. In 1779 he was appointed to the rank of Major, and remained under the command of Major General William Heath for three years. In Aug 1783 he received a commission as Lieutenant Colonel in the Massachusetts line to take rank 12 Oct 1782. He held this rank to the close of the war. He was honored as a member of the Society of the Cincinnati and the document given to him was signed by H. Knox Sec. and G. Washington, President.

On 29 Dec 1794, he went to Philadelphia to make a personal application to Congress for a pension as an invalid, but it came to no avail and he returned home with a pocket emptied by the expense of the trip.

In an effort to make some money for his declining years, he bought some horses, left home in Jul 1799 and sailed from Hartford for the West Indies. He had a good and prosperous voyage, but just three days before his vessel was to arrive in port homeward bound, he was taken with a fever on 14 Oct, died and was buried at sea.

Ebenezer was a member of the Lexington minute men, ready to do battle on the 19th of April in freedom's cause. He was wounded in the elbow in the morning, but mounted his horse riding from town to town, alarming the people and rousing them into action, until too exhausted by the loss of blood. He claimed to have fired the first gun on the American side. The testimony of others proved that he did return the fire. He performed other duties in the Revolution, being one of those who joined the campaign in the Jersey's in 1776. At the close of the war he moved to Ashburnham, Massachusetts, where he was a lieutenant.

A deposition made by Ebenezer on 2 Apr 1825 reads:

I, Ebenezer Munroe, of Ashburnham, in the county of Worcester and the common- wealth of Massachusetts, in the seventy-third year of my age, on oath depose and say, that I was an inhabitant of Lexington in the county of Middlesex in the year 1775; that, during the night of the 18th of April of that year, I was alarmed by one Micah Nagles, who stated that the British troops were on their march from Boston, and that Lieutenant Tidd requested myself and others to meet on the common as soon as possible. I accordingly repaired to the common, the usual place of parade, where I found Captain Parker, and, I should think, about forty of the company had collected. The weather being rather chilly, after calling the roll, we were dismissed, but ordered to remain within call of the drum. The men generally went into the tavern adjoining the common. In the mean time, persons were sent towards Boston to get some intelligence, if possible, of the regulars. The last person sent was Thaddeus Bowman, who returned between day-light and sun-rise, and informed Captain Parker, that the British troops were within a mile of the meeting-house. Captain Parker immediately ordered the drum beat to arms. I was the first that followed the drum. I took my station on the right of our line, which was formed from six to ten rods back to the meeting-house, facing south. About seventy of our company had assembled when the British troops appeared. Some of our men went into the meeting-house, where the town's powder was kept, for the purpose of replenish- ing their stock of ammunition. When the regulars arrived within eighty or one hundred rods, they hearing our drum beat, halted, charged their guns, and doubled their ranks, and marched up at quick step. Captain Parker ordered his men to stand their ground, and not to molest the regulars, unless they meddled with us. The British troops came up directly in our front. The commanding officer advanced within a few rods of us, and exclaimed "Disperse, you damned rebels! you dogs, run! Rush on my boys!" and fired his pistol. The fire from their front ranks soon followed. After the first fire, I received a wound in my arm, and then, as I turned to run, I discharged my gun into the main body of the enemy. As I fired, my face being toward them, a ball cut off a part of my ear locks, which was then pinned up. Another ball passed between my arm and body, and just marked my clothes. The first fire of the British was regular; after that, they fired promiscuously. As we retreated one of our company, Benjamin Sampson, I believe, who was running with me, turned his piece and fired. When I fired, I perfectly well recollect taking aim at the regulars. The smoke, however, prevented my being able to see many of them. The balls flew so thick, I thought there was no chance for escape, and that I might as well fire my gun as stand still and do nothing. I am confident, that it was the determination of most of our company, in case they were fired upon, to return fire. I did not hear Captain Parker's orders to his company to disperse. When the British came up in front of the meeting-house, Joshua Simonds was in the upper gallery, an open cask of gunpowder standing near him, and he afterward told me, that he cocked his gun and placed the muzzle of it close to the cask of powder, and determined to "touch it off," in case the troops had come into the gallery. After our company had all dispersed, and the British troops had done firing, they gave three cheers. After they had marched off for Concord, we took two prisoners who were considerably in the rear of the main body. I carried their arms into Buckman's tavern, and they were taken by some of our men, who had none of their own. I believed at the time, that some of our shots must have done execution. I was afterward confirmed in this opinion, by the observations of some prisoners, whom we took in the afternoon, who stated, that one of their soldiers was wounded in the thigh, and that another received a shot through his hand.

Josiah was in the French War of 1762. He also served in the Jersey's for three months in 1776 and had the rank of Captain in the Revolution, serving two and a half years in the Continental Line.

According to the inscription on his monument, he "became the friend of Lafayette, who recognized his services in the gift of a sword." He was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati, and was one of the 48 pioneers who, under General Rufas Putnam, settled the Northwest Territory, the first settlement being Marietta, Ohio, where he was the first justice of the peace and the second postmaster.

He settled in Amherst, New Hampshire, about 1777 and moved to Marietta, Ohio in 1788, where he and his wife died.

Nathan was a member of Captain Parker's minute men, and took part in the battle of Lexington in 1775. He lived on Monument Street. His house received several balls, which were taken out subsequently, when the house was repaired. A chest of drawers in Nathan's house was hit by a stray ball which penetrated the front panel of the third drawer down, from the top of the chest. It pierced the panel a bit to the right of the center and tore out a large section of the wood on the inside of the drawer. This chest is still in possession of one of the family (1964), with the bullet hole still remaining.

Following is a deposition made by Nathan on 22 Dec 1824.

I, Nathan Munroe, in the county of Middlesex and state of Massachusetts, do testify and say, that I was enrolled as a soldier in the company commanded by Captain Parker of said Lexington, in the year 1775; and, knowing that several British officers went up the road towards Concord in the evening of the 18th of April of said year, I, with Benjamin Tidd, at the request of my captain, whent to Bedford in the evening, and notified the inhabitants through the town, to the great road at Merriam's Corner, so called, in Concord, and then returned to Lexington. When arrived at the common, the bell was ringing, and the company collecting. I immediately got my arms and went to the parade. Captain Parker gave orders to us to load our guns, but not to fire unless we were fired upon first. About five o'clock in the morning, the British made their appearance at the east end of the meeting-house, near where our men were, and immediately commenced firing on us. I got over the wall into Buckman's land, about six rods from the British, and then turned and fired at them. About the middle of the forenoon, Captain Parker, having collected part of his company, marched them towards Concord, I being with them. We met the regulars in the bounds of Lincoln, about noon, retreating towards Boston. We fired on them, and continued to do so until they met their reinforcement in Lexington.

«i»Joshua Monroe entered the service of the United States in New London, CT on 1 Jan 1780. He enlisted to serve in the navel service on board the Continental Frigate Trumball carrying 24- 12 Pounders and 8-6 Pounders, commanded by Captain James Nickerson, John Mailering, 1st Lieutenant, Jacob White, 2d Lieutenant, Daniel Star, 3d Lieutenant, David Bill, 4th Lieutenant, Gilbert Solderstill Captain of Marines, Samuel Hand, sailing master, Alexander Piggins, Adam Preroder, Jasper Giffing, 1st mates with a crew of 162.

On the first day of May 1780, the Trumball sailed from New London on a blockading voyage against the British. They sailed south and east of the Bahama Islands. On the first day of June, and at a latitude of about 30 degrees, southeast of the Bahamas we fell in with the Birtish ship Watt of Liverpool carrying 36 guns. The engagement lasted 4 hours and 30 minutes, 42 men of the Trumball were killed or wounded. Joshua Sisis and David Bill were killed and Brad Lesset, David Star and Alexander Aocament were wounded. The Watt withdrew and the Trumball being very much injured was unable to give her chase.

The next morning we started back for Boston, the ports of Philadelphia and New York being in British hands. We arrived in Boston the latter part of June. When the frigate was repaired and loaded with artillery stored for the army, we sailed in September from Boston for Philadelphia where we deposited our load. The Trumball then went on sailing in the company of Continental Frigate Delim off the east coast of the states, guarding the coastline until the last of December 1780 when she returned to Philadelphia where Joshua left the frigate on the 1st of january 1781 and went on board the ship Morning Star sailing to New London where he completed his one year enlistment.

He lived in New London for sixteen years. (Extract from pension application). June 25 1773 Joshua's Grandfather John was appointed guardian in the New London Probate Court. Joshua and Sarah left New London about 1799 and settled in Otsego County NY. Going with them were Susannah Maples Ranson and her husband and David Maples and his wife Lois.

Joshua sold Property of his wife in Montville CT, 17 March 1800. Joshua was listed as head of household in the 1800 Otsego County Federal census. 15 Oct 1800 Joshua purchased property from William Cooper. On 8 September 1812 Joshua sold the same parcel to Robert Bourne for $1800. The same day Joshua purchased a 600 acre parcel in Tioga County New York from Robert Bourn, for $2400, Witnesses: George Bourn, George Bourne Jr., and Joshua Monroe Jr. On 2 Jun 1814 Joshua sold 120 acres of this land to his son David. Witnesses: David Fairchild, Sinson Fairchild. On 17 May 1816 Joshua sold 100 acres of this land to his son Joshua. Witnesses: David Monroe and his wife Polly Monroe.

Joshua made a will in Tioga County NY, 19 March 1841 which was probated 6 March 1848. In the probate file his heirs were identified as Belinda Gillet, wife of Archippus Gillet of Evansville, IN; David Monroe of Seneca County NY; Pardon Monroe of Barton, and the seven children of the deceased Joshua Monroe, son of the testator. The names of Oliver Monroe and Edwin Monroe were the only ones known to the court; they lived in Vanderburgh County IN.«/i»

When Harris moved to Dedham, Massachusetts, James Monroe was President of the United States and as the Lexington Family was otherwise unrepresented in the neighborhood, it was natural for the townspeople to adopt, and for Harris Munroe to change the spelling of his name to conform to that of the President.
