Christian Munro

Notes:

Christian (or Christina) and her two younger sisters were left orphans at a young age. Her father died in 1705, when Christian was only nine years old. It is said that the Mackenzies, who knew that she would succeed to a fair fortune for those days, resolved to kidnap her in order to marry her to one of their own relatives when she arrived at a suitable age. The old family nurse placed Christian in a creel, covered her over with cabbages, and walked down one avenue from the house with the creel on her back while the Mackenzies rode up the other.

The faithful nurse in this way got clear away with her charge and found her way to Foulis Castle, where Sir Robert, the twenty-third Baron, received her hospitably, and agreed, on the solicitations of the nurse, to bring up the girl until she arrived at an age to choose a husband for herself. The "Heiress of the Creel" as she was called, ultimately married Sir Robert's son, George.

John appears to have led a quiet country life at home. In 1751, he established a bleachfield on the spot where later the Culcairn mills stood. It was then the only one in the county of Ross. For several years it succeeded pretty well, but after John's death it passed through the hands of different managers, and was not so successful.

John married Katharine, the daughter of Thomas Ross of Calrossie.

Duncan entered the army at an early age. When the 78th Higland Regiment, the Ross-shire Buffs, was created on 8 Mar 1793, he became Captain-Lieutenant of the first batallion.

On 5 Jan 1795, his regiment was engaged in the battle of Geldermalsen. On that day, Captain duncan Munro took a conspicuous part, behaved with great coolness, and was severely wounded. On 4 Nov, the 78th embarked for India, arriving at Calcutta on 10 Feb 1797. At that time, Captain Munro was appointed Aide-de-camp to the well-known Lieutenant General Mackenzie-Fraser of Inverallochy and Castle Fraser.
Duncan retired from the army in 1802 and returned home. In 1803, he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel commanding the Wester Ross Regiment of Militia which numbered 810 men.

His wife, Jean, was the eldest daughter of the Rev. Robert Kirke, minister of Dornoch from 1713 to 1758, and his wife Jean Ross.

Catherine married Hugh Rose of Glastullich, son of the Rev. Hugh Rose, parish minister of Creich (1759-1770) and of Tain (1770-1774).

As a young man, Hugh went to the West Indies to seek his fortune and succeeded in finding it. He was employed there by the Government as Paymaster in the Commissariat Department. He returned to Scotland in about 1802.

Hugh's first wife was Miss Phips, the daughter of a West Indian planter, who was quite wealthy. Soon after he arrived in Scotland, he purchased the estates of Glastullich, Calrossie, and Tarlogie, all in the vicinity of Tain, and Culcairn, in the parish of Roskeen. This was the ancient inheritance of his forbears on his mother's side. He soon converted the estates from "a state of nature" to a "highly adorned and cultivated condition."

Mr. Joseph Mitchell, C.E., Inverness, who knew Hugh intimately says in his "Reminiscences of my Life in the Highlands, vol. I. pp. 285-288" that Hugh was energetic and active, a great promoter of roads and other public works. He was disliked at first by the old families of the county because of all the improvements and innovations he made.

He had to fight several legal battles because of his estates. After an expensive legal battle he won the fishing rights in the Dingwall Firth. He lost to the duke of Sutherland, an action for the same rights in the Dornoch Firth.

He also had a major litigation over the Cromarty estate, which he claimed in right of his second wife, Catherine. After forty years, he finally won his claim. When he entered the property, he assumed the name of Ross and lived several years in the possession and enjoyment of the Cromarty estates.

He seemed to be constantly in the courts until it seemed that litigation was his passion. The last weeks of his life were spent in court against Munro of Teaninich. It so happened that both litigants were quite old and both died soon after the court rendered its decision. Hugh passed away in a hotel in Inverness.

Hugh was an able and kind-hearted man, and, notwithstanding his excitable and keen temper, within the precincts of his own house and family there ever reigned peace and domestic happiness. he was active in relieving the poor, the indigent, and oppressed.

He was buried in the ancient church of St. Duthus in Tain where he had served for many years as Provost.

Duncan entered the medical profession and served for several years as a doctor in the Indian Army. He was drowned on the passage from India to China. He was not married.

Hector studied at King's College and the University of Aberdeen. He received his M.A. on 27 Mar 1800. He was licensed by the Presbytery of Dingwall on 31 May 1802. The following April, the Hon. Maria Hay Mackenzie of Cromarty presented him to the church and parish of Alness, as his father's successor, and he was inducted there on 28 Sep 1803 at the early age of 21 years.

He had not completed his studies when the parish became vacant, but his father's family was respected so much by the parishioners that they agreed to prolong the vacancy in order that Hector might get the appointment. He remained minister of Alness for nearly 17 years and then was transferred to Dingwall on 29 Jul 1820. His move away from Alness caused very general regret.

He was of kindly disposition, refined manners, and bore a very high character both as a minister and a gentleman. He always took a deep interest in the material as well as in the spiritual welfare of his people, and his many excellent and amiable qualities secured for him the esteem and goodwill of all classes, especially of the poor, by whom he was much beloved and highly respected.

He served as minister of Dingwall for 29 years.
