Notes |
- Charles served with distinction in the Civil War. He entered the service as a private in Company F, 114th Regiment, New York Volunteer Infantry on 9 Aug 1862. He was promoted to first sergeant on 1 Mar 1863 and commissioned second lieutenant in Company E on 1 Sep 1863. He was promoted to first lieutenant in Company G on 10 Aug 1864.
He was wounded in the assault on Port Hudson on 14 Jun 1863 and again in the battle of Opequan-Winchester on 19 Sep 1864. He was discharged on 17 Jun 1865.
