Notes |
- One reference says Catherine was born in 1821 in Cayuga County, New York. This is probably incorrect.
A Catherine Monroe bought 40 acres of land on 9 Dec 1836 in Vanderburgh County from the US Land Office in Vincennes, Indiana. It is difficult to explain why the US Government would sell land to a 12 year old girl. This was almost two years after her father's death. Her second husband, N. B. Stroud sold the land in 1848.
She married George Robert (or Ruber) in 1839. If the birth date is correct, she would have been 15 years old, a very young bride even for those times. It may have been that her orphan status hastened the marriage process.
In 1850, she was 26 years old and living with her family in Vanderberg County, Indiana.
The N. B. Stroud family was not found on the 1860 census indexes for Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, or Missouri. Possibly the family migrated beyond these immediate states.
