  Edwin's biography in the 1888 Posey County, Indiana history says he was born in Cuyahoga County, New York. There is no such county and it is believed that he was born in Tioga County, New York. His tombstone inscription reports that he was born 30 May 1813. Other sources say 1815 or 1817. Both of his parents were dead by the time he was thirteen to eighteen years of age, and he was obliged to support himself at that age. In 1835, Edwin purchased land from the US Vincennes land Office. He sold the same parcel less than a year later and then purchased a lot in the town of Mount Vernon in 1845. The 1850 census of Posey County, Black Township lists Edwin as a 33 year old farmer born in Connecticut and owning $1800 in property. The 1860 census says he was a 43 year old farmer born in New York. Edwin is found on the 1880 census of Black Township, Posey County, Indiana as a 65 year old farmer, but he is called Edward.
