  Charles was a lieutenant in the war of 1812. He was appointed Ensign in the U.S. Army and later was lieutenant in the celebrated 4th Regiment. He took part in all the battles in which the regiment took its full share on the northern frontier in the war of 1812. He upheld the character of his Scotch ancestors as a brave and gallant officer.
